I work in the sleep industry as a registered polysomnographic technologist. What’s happening is people were using a non FDA approved method of cleaning for their machines using ozone generation machines instead of the manufacture recommendation of warm water with a mild detergent. Because of this, and due to some patients not having AC and living in high humidity areas, it was causing the foam to break down. So far from the reported incidents it’s only been 0.03% of machines which again, user improperly cleaning them and/or the machine being stored in high humidity areas. It has nothing to do with the machine itself causing these issues

@Nicole Whitfield You're being experimented on. Telling you you need an entire new study done is for data collection purposes masked at preliminary/routine visits.
I was told by my Doctor that most, if not all CPAP machines utilize the same sound dampening foam material that they are describing here. Getting a different model or machine from another manufacturer might not be the easy or even safe solution.
@@chrisconsorte7893 hi, this video just happened to come through my feed. I use this same machine. Did you get notification from your doctor or the the provider about this recall?.. because if not for this video I would not be aware.
I spend 2 decades with sleep apnea. I never understood why I never felt rested, and tired, and generally irritable. When I took my sleep study, I stop breathing so long, my pulse ox went into the 60s. I have no idea how much damage I did to my body over the 2 decades I suffered. If you sleep for 8-10 hours and never feel rested. Do not dream. Excessive snoring. Wake up with your heart pounding and your head on fire, and breathing hard. Please, for you own life get a sleep study done. It changed my life. I was a fool for not getting it when I was young. PS: you do not have to be an overweight person to have sleep apnea. Talk to your doctor about your sleep patterns if any of these things seem familiar.
I am so angry and people are already sueing them and MAYO and I I think John Hopkins immediately stopped using them in their clinics and hospitals. Think of the patients with covid that used them and breathed carcinogens! They said they think the company knew before they told anyone and hid it from the customers and hospitals, etc. I am furious as my fiancé is on one and has had a bad break out on his head. I think it’s the machine! He is acting too not worried. I read the articles. It’s scary.

I’m very lucky. I replaced my Phillips with another brand a few months before the recall, just by coincidence. Of course Phillips didn’t get complaints - no one knew about the danger! But my question is, what lung damage has already been done and what is Phillips going to do about it? Cancer doesn’t show up until years after exposure!

@Janine Carson I honestly hope your replacement didn't use the same foam. All too often products are manufactured using materials that act the same or is the same as another manufacturer. I place the biggest blame 1st on the FDA bc all products used in medical equipment SHOULD be tested 1st.
I've used the same machine for 2 years now and I have to use it to keep my job. CLD drivers in California have to pass a DOT physical to maintain there license. If you have sleep apnea you have to show the doctor your using a cpap machine to pass the physical.

@@berniesbend Wow, the first one is bad, the second one is bad, this is such a horrible situation. I hope y'all can find a better CPAP that works soon.
@@berniesbend I have a DreamStation BiPap machine that is for my severe Complex Sleep Apnea. Medicare bought it for me in April 2019. I can’t afford to purchase another machine now. However, I am having respiratory issues now from the use of my machine. I’m not sure who is culpable in this situation. But…… I’m unsure how to proceed from here. 😳
I fixed my sleep apnea for free overnight by learning to sleep elevated. I prop 3 big pillows under my head and one under my back for back support. It took a week to get used to sleeping like that but I no longer snore and don’t have apnea anymore and I actually love to sleep elevated now. Hope this helps someone! No goofy machine crap to deal with ever. Give it a shot 👌
Yep. Elevating your head does help. I have one of those remote controlled beds and sleep at an angle. I used to have bad acid reflux and sleeping slightly upright helps so much.
I was in a car accident and can barely sleep laying down. I bought a unique arm chair pillow to put on my bed. So i sleep sitting indian styleish with my head and back against the pillow/wall behind it. I dont know if thats just too extreme sleeping sitting up, but I had 65 distruptions a hour.
This is the machine I was given when I was diagnosed with very mild sleep apnea. (I barely qualified for the diagnosis but in order to consider other treatments for my poor sleep, my insurance required I used the CPAP for 30 consecutive nights.) I’m so glad that after the 30 nights I chose to stop using it, because it wasn’t improving my sleep any. My minimal exposure to possible toxic chemicals angers me, but it angers me more that there are people out there like the ones in this video who don’t have the same luxury I did, of being able to go without. Phillips should have to pay for new machines, especially in the case of the woman who got denied for a new one. It is unacceptable that a company so many have trusted for medical devices recalls a device without any type of immediate assistance. Patients are literally potentially putting their lives at risk while they continue to use their machines in the meantime. Disgusting. DO BETTER, PHILLIPS.
I was miserable every night while trying to adjust to the CPAP machine. I just decided it was just as bad as being sleepy during the day, and quit using it.
Mild sleep apnea does not seem worth the hassle of getting used to cpap. However when you are in the severe range it is definitely worth it. I would stop breathing 69 times per hour without it only 2.7 with it. It is not convenient to have to use it every time you need to sleep but to me it is definitely worth it. I usually don't even notice it any more even on 18 cm\h20. My sleep and my life is so much better with it than without it. Its almost immeasurable. I am not willing to go without so I will have to wait until they replace it. I am not too worried since I have never used ozone. Its not ideal but its better than not breathing or sleeping.
@@jeffboone7959 absolutely! My AHI was just over 5 times per hour, which barely qualifies but is enough to be considered “mild.” After a month, my AHI was still around the same and it wasn’t worth the hassle for me. What you’re describing is considered “severe” apnea and definitely isn’t worth not using the machine.
I have mild to moderate sleep apnea and will be getting a machine tomorrow. I hope it works or I too will not be using it again. I’m already upset that in order to use a CPAP that I have to sleep on my back or side when I’m a stomach sleeper 😫 that’s gonna be hard in itself.

One of the problems, is when one or two corporations are the only ones in charge of most of a given product such as these machines. Some medical supplies such as medical equipment (same with big pharma) need to have as many corporate players in the game as possible. If one c-pap machine is under recall there are thousands of others available to the patient. Here Philips is the big player and refuses to help any faster than they choose.

You can tell how often from the results of a sleep study done at a hospital or clinic. @@victoriagauthier2008 sleep apnea is when you stop breathing in your sleep. I've suffered for years until, I was put on a CPAP machine that forces air into your airways so, you don't stop breathing
That's not consistent with the news piece which claimed that the degradation occurs naturally. It’s so much more than “getting a good night sleep”. You can die in your sleep. It can lead to strokes…
Facts
True some night I woke up gasping for air. Sleep apnea can be very dangerous

@@commancheheart420 same here! I wore it the minimum required 4 hours/night for 30 days, for insurance purposes, and never touched it again!

The doctors shouldn’t have people stop using their machines. Phillips should pay to have them replaced.
I literally just got a new machine to replace my former Philips CPAP. It’s a new brand. I just got the letter from Philips his last few weeks.
How did you get a new machine?? My husband needs his cpap!! They are doing nothing to help!!
My partner and I both have Philips machines- his was made in 2020 and he's only used it a few months, but mine is more than 8 years old...my asthma has gotten worse since I've had it, and the machine has gotten progressively louder...
UA-cam just removed my post, It was a testimony of how the B1 nutritional yeast cured my sleep apnea. It found a video of dr Berg's explaining how when you are (B-1) thiamine deficient it can cause you to gulp air when you fall asleep, which gulping air is sleep apnea.. And so I tried it. After a week I started feeling a lot better. After a month, I started working out again. I felt like I was in my thirties or forties and I am 61.. true story.
Phillips hasn’t done anything for me. I registered my Phillips Dream Station on the recall list. I have been using my machine for 5 years. I first called Apria who directed me to Phillips who told me to call my doctor. I hope Medicare doesn’t deny me - jeez!
I have one of these machines, we were told to register on their website and they will contact us when they have the problem resolved. As some other people noted, if they have a replacement device, they should replace the older models and suck it up. The cost of litigation if this is proven to have caused cancer could bankrupt them down the road.
Thank God I saw this fortunately my machine is not affected. You'll have me stressed though I was worried I was not going to sleep at all tonight or the next night or any subsequent night.
My spouse and I have that machine and we can't function without it. Im hoping that losing weight will eliminate the need for the device. In the meantime, Phillips should pay consumers and replace units immediately!
this is some unbelievable, unsettling news, hopefully nothing happens to that citizens who use those don’t know why they can’t get free upgrades to their cpac machines and switch to brand new ones instead
I’m so done with this society which acts rapidly to help corporations and so slowly that it waits for people to die to help individuals.
That is exactly how I feel
I've been able to get a new Cpap 3 times since I've used one for a while. My old machines are in perfect working order. Why can't they be donated? Because it's considered a medical item that needs a prescription. (eBay stopped the sale of used ones a few years ago). Frankly, I don't know what the risk is. Who wants one who doesn't need one? It's a shame.
Same here. I’m on my second machine and the first one is in the storage closet, just in case a relative is also diagnosed with sleep apnea and can’t afford the machine.
Candida auris could be present in the used machines. For a healthy person no big deal, but with someone who might have a compromised immune system it would be a death sentence.
My machine is made by Resmed and it’s perfect. I absolutely hate using it.
We’re always waiting on the FDA to do something which could take years to fix.
Profit before people... any time, all the time.
My sleep apnea is so bad I have nightmares that I’m dying/drowning if I don’t wear my cpap. I’ll keep using mine
That also happens to me, except in my dreams I'm suffocating, just cant breath, then I finally wake up. It's terrifying.

Me too, I fell asleep without it the other night and woke up from a nightmare about having my son’s lego spaceship caught in my throat so I couldn’t breathe.
@@victoriagauthier2008 - People with sleep apnea actually stop breathing when they are sleeping. It happens all night, and even if you fall asleep or take a nap during the day. You can tell how often from the results of a sleep study done at a hospital or clinic. When you finally wake up enough to breath, sometimes it's a large intake breath, but sometimes if you only slightly wake up the breaths are smaller and shallow, mirroring how you are trying to breathe in your dream. Personally, I've not heard of gulping breaths at the sleep clinic. Your information is interesting however, it might help you in other ways also.
sleep with head or upper body elevated.
I just discovered today that my machine has been recalled. Whew! I've used it for over 20 years, but need it since I fell asleep behind the wheel a few times, wrecking my car. I did so once while overseas on active duty, but wasn't diagnosed.
So, I went to my pulmonologist yesterday and we discussed this. He said, if you use a CPAP cleaning machine it breaks down the filter inside because, it produces ozone gases that break down the filter. He told me if I have never used a cleaning machine on my CPAP machine I don't need to worry. I also have a water chamber which will catch any thing that may break loose from inside the machine. I decided to check the water chamber for particles and I found none. Do not use those face mask and tubing CPAP cleaners. I have always cleaned my masks, tubing and nasal pillows in hot soapy water and rinsed well and air dried.

@@victoriagauthier2008 sleep apnea is when you stop breathing in your sleep. I've suffered for years until, I was put on a CPAP machine that forces air into your airways so, you don't stop breathing
That’s good to hear - glad I’ve never used a cleaning machine for mine either, just soap and water like you.
JoAnn, I got the same info from my doctor and Phillips. Thanks for sharing.
That's not consistent with the news piece which claimed that the degradation occurs naturally. In addition to off-gassing toxic chemicals which would not leave particulate in the water, the C-pap does not run/push the air through the water. It is not filtering the air. Some particulate might end up in the reservoir, but not all particles will be caught.
My friend just recently received his, like maybe two- three months ago. I hope these people got theirs. Thank God I have Resmed.
Yeah, these were recalled months ago...
If you need a machine it also protects your heart. It’s not only for a good night sleep. When you stop and start breathing through the night it affects your heart over time
If the Dream Station 2, doesn't have the same material in it as the 1st., then why not quickly install that material into the 1st machine, like the 2nd machine. I used mine for over a year....then developed expectorant of mucus several times a day. When I have surgery, I will use mine, but don't want to take a chance with getting cancer. I'll use over-the-counter aides, nasal enlargers, opening the jaw and sleep on my side. 12 Months for a solution? Come on FDA & Philips get on it!!!
Its funny right after they make a new one they recall the old ones..
This is a giant money grab it seems
They should be giving out the dream station 2 free of charge for the old units if they had any dignity...
And they should be doing it NOW
@@helpabrothawithasubisaiah5316 I agree on NOW...but they say they are waiting of the FDA to approve the replacement material. I did think the replacements were going to be free...but I'm not sure. I think there is a 5 yr. period by Medicare
to pay for new machines. I just assumed Philips would replace the defective machines. I think it is a law..
I ditched mine after one month. Replaced it with an mouthpiece fitted by my dentist. Its not perfect but my wife says I don't snore as much.
Get another brand. I have sleep apnea. I don’t use the Phillips brand.
Like often with medical suppliers the choices are small.
I wasn't even notified; I learned on social media. I stopped using my machine because I had an abnormal lung CT result. I couldn't buy one because every other brand is on back order. I ended up with bradycardia. Now I have a Pace Maker.
