    Whilst Liverpool were signing Beardsley and Barnes, we were signing Ian Wilson.

      Whilst I believe the ban cost us another European trophy we also signed people no better than squad standard and it cost us.
      They kicked on and signed Houghton Aldridge Beardsley & Barnes, we only signed McCall & Cottee that were anywhere near the standard from 88 onwards

    There are some great points that show the difference regarding history, rumour and facts. It shows where fans stories are fan rumour and hearsay and the press, compared to historical research. It is refreshing that Gav is critical and realistic about the club also, does not just look through blue tinted specs.

    Evertons problems go far deeper , and we need to stop blaming Heysel.
    The fact that boyhood Blues like Speed, Rush, Mcmanaman, Owen, Carragher were never picked up in their early part of their life is testament to this, we are the worst run club in the country and have been for over 50 years

    A wonderful interview. It's good to have long-held views challenged at times. And, although I think the European ban damaged Everton more than any other club (that's why we don't have Liverpool's international fanbase). It's a myth to claim the ban was the reason for our decline.
    Thank you. I really enjoyed it.

    Not a Everton fan but grew up with them being one of the big 5 clubs not that long ago in the modern era.. An excellent insight into the Toffees' demise. Aways wondered how they would have succeeded in Europe and domestically if English clubs were not banned in the 80s.

    The author falsely understates the impact of Heysel and 5 year ban from European football on Everton’s success and investment since 1985. Everton’s underinvestment in talent and loss of Gary Lineker to Barcelona and others to Rangers is a symptom of the European ban. After the ban was lifted, it took 8 years (14 in Liverpool FC’s case) for another English club to win the European Cup. Imagine if Liverpool FC had been banned from playing in the European Cup in 1976/7 to 1981/2. Add 8 years to recover. and Liverpool FC’s greatest era and attractiveness to investors would have been diminished just as Everton’s was as a result of Heysel. Evertonians know our history. It does not need to be rewritten 40 years on. Instead, let’s concentrate on building a bright future for Everton.

    • @Gavb66
      @Gavb66 Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching but it's not rewriting history though, I'm merely stating the facts: the claims that the team "fell apart" are not true. As I said three years after Heysel all the players from the 5-0 v Man United were still there. The bad decisions made by the club are there to see after 1987.

    • @mattbyrne3621
      @mattbyrne3621 3 дні тому

      I agree with what you say. By summer 89, Steven, Stevens, Lineker, Heath and Kendall had all left for clubs competing in Europe. When Baz points out that Adrian Heath, a lynchpin of that era, feels that Heysel was huge in the team's decline, Gav appears to dismiss this ahead of his own view. I'm with Inchy on this one.

    2 reasons.
    1) Heysel. The 5 year ban for all English clubs was a piss take when it should have been simply punishing the perpetrators of whom we all know that is.
    2) The club stopped being ambitious once 1990 arrived.
    We tightened the purse string to the extent that clubs that shouldn't have been in our stratosphere were buying the players we should have been signing.

    • @Bluebri1000

      There would be no ban to anyone this day and age…just a slap, and money is the reason, UEFA just bottled it at the time

    4 years on from winning the league in 85, and Heysel, we had lost Stevens, Van den Hauwe, Mountfield, Reid, Bracewell, Steven, Gray, Likenker, Heath and Kendall. Heysel played a huge part in that teams breakup. Likes of Lineker, Kendall, Steven, Stevens, Heath all going to different leagues where European football was available.

  • @mattbyrne3621
    @mattbyrne3621 6 днів тому

    Mate,the reason we used 23 players in 86 87 was the chronic injury list. Can you not remember Southall, Van den hauwe, Reid and others missed lots of that season. Bracewell didn't kick a ball. Likes of Pointon, Harper, Power, Clarke, Mimms, Snodin all played a part.

      @@williamwallace7651- we are all entitled to our opinion. I saw Mountfield against City (away) we won 3-1, he was brilliant that day but Kendall couldn’t keep him in the team because he’d paid 900k for donkey Watson. The defense (in my opinion) was never the same. Rats and Degzy just understood each other.
      For me, it’s was a big mistake & waste of money. Apparently DM had epilepsy and that’s what worried Kendal into buying Watson.

      I certainly don't believe the theory that the team broke up too soon after Heysel, too convenient. As I said more than three years after Heysel all the players who started the 5-0 v Man U were still at the club, that's a long time in footballing terms.

      Mate, I'm not pushing anything. It was a fact and players left because of it, I know this because I've interviewed them all. Weird comment tbh. Everton's decisions alongside this were terrible and probably as equal but the reality is a European ban did stop EFC growth. No reason to try and turn this into Everton / Liverpool thing, it's just reality. If LFC were banned now for 5 years your side would break up and the growth would stop they're just the simple facts.
