Wax paper is a regularly entry in low budget projects. If I need a lot on square meters I usually go to a local fabric store and buy cheap or refurbished fabrics ( white and black ones, one time even green). The strangest DIY diffusion method that I seen was a hard plastic bottle cut in two on a flash light.
If I'm going for a high key look I love bouncing light of the ceiling, Its a great way to increase ambient light. I also like shooting light though unbleached muslin, it will soften the light nicely but also add a warmer tone to the light. and lastly I like using a black moving blanket as a neg fill as it doubles as some sound dampening.
My favourite DiY diffusion cloths are actually white fabric walls for party tents! The great thing about them is that they have 3 sides with velcro straps that allow you to hang it from a boom, or drag it tight between two stands/trees/flag poles, you name it, to get the full 2m/6ft lenght! The ones I use are about 1.25/1.5 stops of diffusion and are also woven, meaning they don't bounce and toss the light around as much as some reflective fabrics, sort of like grid cloth. I reccomend this to everyone, pros aswell as beginners. I got mine in the winter from bargain bins for like 10 bucks! (PS: Before you buy, make sure they aren't too thick or waterproof which stops the light almost completely).
Foam core meant for arts & crafts can be found in the dollar store and work great for bouncing. For $4 you can tape 4 of them together and you have a huge bounce card.
Love when Aputure puts out content like this. I have some lights but I'm getting to the point where I want to use more modifiers to shape the light to better fit the story. Maybe we'll see some Aputure budget modifiers in the future?
Lately I've been hanging a 7' wide shower curtain from a 6' speed rail, that is held up by a super clamp attached to a C-Stand. Makes for a good low budget 7x7 diffusion when lighting big spaces!
Shower curtains work great and because they are really nice and big! You can get some really soft light because of the big surface they provide. Thanks for all the amazing Tips :)
Covered wagon. Not enough people do this still but has some excellent light quality. Take a scrap piece of 1x3, screw some porcelain sockets into it, wire them up with some 14 gauge wire and a male hubble. Throw some chicken wire over the top so the bulbs don't burn the diffusion and wrap in muslin. Super awesome DIY light that gets used on all kinds of films like the social network and snow white and the huntsman etc.
Great tips, guys! I loved the 5 in 1 because everyone have one of these and if you don't use the white side, you can use the black side for negative fill
I use multiple types of diffusion: Aputure umbrella, shower curtain, bought some white muslin from a fabric shop online, and I was cleaning out some boxes and found a great piece of fabric that's half cotton/half polyster. Also have two sizes of 5 in one reflector. The favourite: the larger 5 in one. quicker and easier to set up and use.
For a long time I used wax paper, attached to can lights with a clothespin. Just upgraded to an HR672 with an EZ Box+ II last week. Having control of the spill has made a big difference in my tiny space!
Hi, great video! My favorite DIY diffusion method is: Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam for bounced, baking paper or soft white bed sheet for diffusion, black felt for negative fill, and for C-stands I used PVC pipes or the hands of a good friend.
Nice video! I use a lot the foam paper that architects use for building miniature buildings. If you buy 2 of them and connect them with a tape it stands it self on a table. Also with a black paper on them can be a great flag!
I’ve been hauling around a shower curtain I got from Home Depot for a few bucks. I’ve used it taped outside of windows, on stands as a large source like a silk, in a book light setup. Not the most original but it looks great
I use Dollar Store white foam boards as bounce cards, 1 Ledgo LED ring, and 1 Neweer LED light. To hold the foam boards I just tape them with Gaffer tape to one of my tripods or Gorilla pods, since I don't have C-stands. Also the 5 in 1 reflector is used often.
I needed a way to diffuse light in a shot once and used a white t-shirt taped to a c-stand to diffuse a tungsten source. Worked pretty well but I was a little worried about the shirt getting too hot...no fire though so it worked out fine
When are you guys going to make some mid-sized RGB lights? We got the MC and the new Nova P300c, looking forward to something in between. RGB LED mats wouldn't hurt and maybe some light tubes. That would be great to control all that together with your app.
Great video!! These are fantastic ideas! Now, I just need one more thing, could you guys make please one video showing how to make a DIY BlackMagic 4k? 😂😂
I started with using parchment or baking paper on a set of work lights for my green screen. I still use it today when I run out of diffusion paper. Also, the good ol' dollar store shower curtain still works.
Not yet tried diy diffusion clothes , nice tutorial, do u add light to background or it's the same book light which is getting spread all over ? @apurture
1/2" PVC frame just the right size to hold a fitted baby crib sheet. Very easy to break down into parts. Machine washable and very inexpensive. The crib sheet can also just be hung over any clamp light.
Great content! Would love to see a vid lighting with mainly a set of 120Ds. Too many vids with 300Ds, a show case of what 150 watt light fixtures can accomplish would be great
My #DIYBUDGETLIGHTING Using any readily available items from the home like a white bed sheet (USD 5 more or less) and either clamp or slung it across a cheap Stainless Steel Cloth Hanger (USD 7 more or less plus its adjustable on width and height with Wheels!) to become the "scrim on a C-stand" and add "colors" to my single color LED panels for the backlight by using a simple affordable school stationary, that is a colored glass/cellophane paper (about USD 0.60 cents for 39" x 35"/100cm x 89cm).... So all in ....Kaching! USD 12.60 for my DIY Diffussion setup. Surprisingly it works works, haha 😉
I like how you make the PA wear a face diaper… Gotta keep ‘em separated, let ‘em know their place. Bonus points for having their own crafty, where they will be required to put their face diaper on between bites, you know…for science.
Love the vid, but personally I found the motion graphics animations with the frame moving around the text while he’s talking to be very distracting/unnecessary
What's your favorite DIY diffusion method? Comment below with your answer for a chance to win an Aputure M9!
Shower curtains for the win!

Some sheer curtains from Walmart are nice, and when you're done, BOOM, you now have curtains for your house!
I’ve been using 8.5x11 paper over some clamp lights for my close ups

Love these tutorial videos that are not trying to sell your products. They make me want to buy your products more.

That's a great idea I would have never thought of. Great suggestion!
@@aputurelighting thank you! I honestly use them more than my skylite frames.. :)

Good content. 7:01 the colors of the hair and skin are betters with DIY modifiers and the shadows too.

White bed sheet is definitely my favorite for a large, soft source!

Great video A-Team! Just did a test video using a shower curtain as diffusion, but a table cloth looks like it works great too!
Shower curtain's a classic tool! But yeah, when we first started using the table cloth, I was shocked to see how great it works!
Diffusing all day, everyday, with shower curtain plus a friend 'holywooding' it.
Favorite method of diy diffusion as of lately: the 5 in 1 reflector’s diffusion. Or the white side as a bounce
It's such a useful tool. I really need to get a second one
Love the cheep tips I am just poken my head in this field of creative video's. Keep up the good work guys!
Foam boards from dollar store for bounce boards and negative fill, also use them as flags, Bedsheets for diffusion
Hi, great video! My favorite DIY diffusion method is: Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam for bounced, baking paper or soft white bed sheet for diffusion, black felt for negative fill, and for C-stands I used PVC pipes or the hands of a good friend.
That's an awesome kit! I'm sure you're able to get some great results with it too
I love using a shower curtain. I also use attention shower rod to hang it up inside hallways. It’s been very handy.
Thanks a lot for the great and very informative tutorial! Very helpful! God bless you all!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Wow, thank you so much for showing all these different options.
Thank you! Awesome ideas and tutorial! 😍
Great Video again guys , I have been using foam core to bounce and a recycled white rain umbrella as a diffuser, works great for me as I'm on a budget
Thanks for the feedback! Nice idea using the rain umbrella!
Liking this for College reasons, I just started my Comp and Visual Design for Digital Cinematography. Great Video!!
super thorough and concise nice vid!
Love your Demonstration !
Thank you so much !
i built a scrim out of muslin and pvc and it worked great! awesome video
Sounds cool! Great idea for a DIY modifier
Great job guys! Two low budget or no budget light modifiers that I often have are the 5 for 1 you mentioned and the good old shower curtain.
Nice video! I use a lot the foam paper that architects use for building miniature buildings. If you buy 2 of them and connect them with a tape it stands it self on a table. Also with a black paper on them can be a great flag!
Love using a shower curtain and pvc frame/ lighting stand . Creating a book light or using 2 layers off diffusion provides perfect fall off😊
I’ve been hauling around a shower curtain I got from Home Depot for a few bucks. I’ve used it taped outside of windows, on stands as a large source like a silk, in a book light setup. Not the most original but it looks great
Hanging the inner lining of a shower curtain on some PVC Pipe. Works nice and easy to transport.
Great tipps - thanks a lot!

great tips, thank you guys
I use shower curtains and butter paper, they are super inexpensive and do a good job diffusing too.
Very very valuable.. Thankyou
I needed a way to diffuse light in a shot once and used a white t-shirt taped to a c-stand to diffuse a tungsten source. Worked pretty well but I was a little worried about the shirt getting too hot...no fire though so it worked out fine
thank you. great video!
THANKS!!!! so good!
I tend to use wax paper or cookie sheets for my diffusion for smaller lights. I've even taped them together for a larger diffusion!
Wax paper is a great diffusion! The issue I've had is finding one big enough but I never considered taping them together, great idea!

great one!
Great video!! These are fantastic ideas! Now, I just need one more thing, could you guys make please one video showing how to make a DIY BlackMagic 4k? 😂😂
What audio equipment are you using in this video?
Very interesting I use 5 in 1 reflector for shooting
DIY Alert!!!
I started with using parchment or baking paper on a set of work lights for my green screen. I still use it today when I run out of diffusion paper. Also, the good ol' dollar store shower curtain still works.
I've been looking for a wide rolls of baking paper for a while now. We only used the table cloth because we couldn't find the baking paper.
@@aputurelighting Try Cost Co or Sam's club. Maybe an industrial Kitchen/Restaurant place might have some large rolls. :)
fantastic
shower curtain ftw!
Not yet tried diy diffusion clothes , nice tutorial, do u add light to background or it's the same book light which is getting spread all over ? @apurture
I like to use dollar store foam board as a bounce card on my desktop studio for shooting plastic models.
Very cool! The smaller the subject the smaller the bounce card needs to be, which allows you to use a lot of different objects as bounces
1/2" PVC frame just the right size to hold a fitted baby crib sheet. Very easy to break down into parts. Machine washable and very inexpensive.
The crib sheet can also just be hung over any clamp light.
What was the diameter of the reflection board which you've used? What's the best diameter for a board for filming usage?
The bounce board we made was about 2 feet by 3 feet. I would say 3x3' is probably the biggest you should go to make it small enough to handle easily.
WoWw this is so much... I don’t feel good for learning this in free of cost.
I went to film school with this guy. I mean, not THIS guy, just his doppelganger. Twinsters.
Great content! Would love to see a vid lighting with mainly a set of 120Ds. Too many vids with 300Ds, a show case of what 150 watt light fixtures can accomplish would be great
Oh we're able to blow your mind! Just wait ;)
Just buy a 300d
A shower curtain. Plus some tape the hang it from the ceiling. Or clip it to a microphone stand.
table cloth it is!
I actually think the DIY looked better. I always find myself using poster board for bounce
The DIY actually does look better. In this case it seems to wrap around the face more.
😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️

You do not mention the cost of all the light stands, clamps etc that you are using.

👍🏿

shower curtain as a diffuser
I think if you can’t afford a reflector this is the wrong game 🤣
Calm

Is it me or... did each DIY option look better??
Answer: I still use shower curtain :)
I'm another 5:1 person
where is vee?
DIY looked better smh
Yes but if you don't have money for the extra diffusers, you don't have money for the stands
