When my dad was fighting terminal cancer, people told my mom that she wasn’t praying hard enough, that she wasn’t doing the “right” alternative treatment with him… it broke her. How dare people do that. They should be ashamed.
That is awful and F those assholes. Some people truly have no self awareness, otherwise they wouldn't say half the awful things that come out of their mouths on the regular.
I am so sorry for you! Of course for you Mom, too, but my Mom is being swallowed up by a manipulative, verbally abusive boyfriend, so I realise how absolutely horrific it is to have to watch your loved one under bad inlfuences and being unable to help. And loosing gour Dad at the same time... It being a year since your comment, I hope you are better by now, and maybe your Mom has recovered a little, too! Sending good wishes from probably quite far away!
Okay James, let me give you some background. I’m a 62 year old, white Christian woman who suffers from auto immune disease. I worked as a makeup artist for Prescriptives (the predecessor of MAC) for many years. I love your show and also Robert’s show, and your show together. Great info and so much fun. I am here to break the stereotype. I can’t count the times I’ve been offered essential oils for my disease. Oh, and also all kinds of supplements, and a whole new wardrobe from Luluroe. Would you like to hear about Mary Kay? I honestly don’t know why religious people are attracted to this junk. Anyway, I appreciate you shining the light on these groups. They steal from their friends, their families, their children’s future, and themselves. Hard to have compassion for it. Love you and keep up the good work.
It’s absurd how many people try to push essential oils on those of us w/ chronic health conditions! I have a rare genetic disorder as well as multiple autoimmune disorders & it’s disturbing how people think they are going to cure things.
I have an autoimmune disorder too, plud EDS type 3, which basically keeps me in severe pain for the first half of my day- I cannot even count how many looney "cures" have been pushed at me, and it's really messed up because people who feel bad 99 percent of the time are in a very vulnerable state mentally, & for people to actually act like they even know you enough to offer some fake ass "this will make everything better" is just really invasive! ..my son is on the autism spectrum & when he was diagnosed, a looong time ago, the Dr that diagnosed him said to us, and I quote: "all I know is, there is a god and he makes everything perfect " ...this was after me and my then- husband learned our son had autism, we were still in a bit of shock or just confusion..& the DOCTOR actually says that...she had no idea if we were religious or not..what if she said this to complete atheists?? Isnt that something drs aren't supposed to do??( sorry I went off on a tangent here) Ppl have offered every kind of "miracle" and "cure" for my son as well...I am not gonna get into all that but I have a small circle of friends I trust, and I am very careful about who I let into my life because of stuff like this. Sorry again for the length of this.
Religious people are attracted to this junk because it's designed to prey on women whose families and communities refuse to let them get real jobs because a woman's place is in the home. The "set your own hours, throw parties X times a week and do everything else on Facebook" structure appeals to women who want an income of their own but feel culture- or faith-based pressure to remain in the home as a SAHM. It is predatory and these companies deserve all the scorn they get.

Here as a cancer patient living in Utah. Have I used EOs for cancer related stuff? Yup-huffing peppermint or orange oils helped with nausea brought on by treatments. Helped me reduce the amount of anti nausea pill popping . Where did I get the oils? The mom and pop shop down the street that made their own and made zero claims about their products. Greedy folx preying off fear and illness-including MLMs can suck it. Humans-we’re weird.
This is how EOs should be used. They’re definitely useful in aromatherapy and used in conjunction with actual peer reviewed, proven medical treatments. I used to waft peppermint oil for nausea when I was pregnant and it helped a some, but I still used anti-nausea meds prescribed by my doctor (which worked better).
I was raised and worked at a nonprofit in the Christian community and one thing I noticed was that a lot of con artists, narcissists, and sociopaths have learned if they talk ostentatiously about being a Christian, they will be accepted and supported by the community without question. A lot of them use this for personal gain, due to the moral imperative Christians feel to support “Christian” businesses. It’s a perfect environment for MLMs.
My mom has unfortunately been possessed by the young living “oily community” scam. She uses them as MEDICINE and it always irritated me. I wasn’t even allowed to have 100% soy and essential oil candles in my room because they “weren’t purified young living oils” and smells “irritate her nose” even though she’d blast seven diffusers in one room. a few years ago when my brother was 6, he had to have an emergency appendectomy and was in the hospital for almost two weeks because every time he complained about the pain, my mom just slathered his stomach with oil until it was almost too late 😞
so sorry to hear that- that must be incredibly tough for you. but i think it’s really awesome that you can recognize that it’s a scam and that you have your sense and wits. hopefully you can pass that down to your younger brother so he doesn’t become brainwashed. i sincerely hope if you ever need medical attention you have someone other than your mother you can confide in (even a guidance counselor at school). try to build ties and relationships with others so in the event you need help, you have somewhere to turn. life’s not easy, but just by your short comment- you appear to have your head screwed on good. sending you much success and happiness. 💕
As a “Mormon” and with a mom who had breast cancer…people who worship essential oils as “god’s medicine” are…insane. Love this new series and your takes on them!! 💕

@@JamesWelsh yes, super predatory! When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the amount of mlm huns that suddenly appeared and started telling me “their products could cure my cancer” was disgusting!
I’m the medical community and giving false hope or promises is ethically and morally horrific. Telling people essential oils cure cancer or covid hurts my heart. I believe having a positive outlook prior to and during treatment (surgery etc.) plays a huge role but it by no means replaces medically appropriate treatment nor does it “guarantee” a positive outcome.
As an aromatherapist, essential oils are complementary to medicine. They can help with stuff, but not cure. There are strict measurements to follow with essential oils and never take internally. Lots of those MLM essential oil companies don't follow these measurements and encourage taking the oils internally which is extremely dangerous
Yes. I was trained by a couple healers a curendera and walker of the path aka shaman. Both told me to never ingest essential oils and always use a carrier oil. I was horrified the first time I hear YL reps telling people to use oils directly on their skin and even worse is when they tell people to ingest it, the frankincense especially worries me.
@@ashassassin not to mention the amount of WATER and resources they take to make. I've stopped using them in my massages and in my daily life. I mean, it's not like we have an endless supply of fresh water. If we truly want to be in harmony with the earth, we need to be wary of how much were using.
Omg I'm 3 mins in and I'm raging. I couldn't agree with you any more. I'm a fully qualified holistic therapist. I never claim to cure. Oils and massage are an aid to modern medicine only never a cure and anyone who says different should be in prison. They have healing properties and are great but we spend years training to use them correctly and safely. It's companies like this that give us a bad name
I'm an aromatherapist and these MLMs give very dangerous advice. There was one meeting where the YL told a woman to put peppermint on their baby's gums. The baby cried and screamed so hard from the pain that he had a seizure. One of the other YL reps reported it and they told her nothing wrong had been done and the baby was just "detoxing."
Aw poor baby . Chamomile or lavender would have been safe but idk if the mlm is food safe. I use peppermint oil soap though it shouldn't be a bad feeling just to be real babies cry when they teeth because of that prob not spicy peppermint ooo scarry.
So one day at work this lady I was serving asked me if I knew what essential oils are. So she got her whole little packet of info (including peppermint oil sample) and was telling me all about the farms. How not even swearing is allowed in the fields and if someone is having a "bad day" and having negative thoughts, they are not to be working. Me (plant science student) was very interested, as they were speaking of all the growing and distilling process like they owned the actual farms and business. When I finally was like "wow, so you own all of this??" "Well... No.." 🙄🙄 I had no idea at the time! They were speaking as if they actually have been on the farms and worked there. Nope. Crazy how they speak of the business as if they own it, but just sell the oil kits. 🙄
I worked as a server with a super weird religious essential oil mlm weirdo. She would try to sell these 60 dollar bottles of oil to the customers she was serving sometimes! It was bonkers. She moved eventually and doesn't talk to me anymore because I didn't vote for trump 😐 I do miss her sweet little daughter a lot. But the lady trying to push that crazy expensive oil on me when I was like 100 bucks away from homelessness every month... Ugh. Like... Yea fuck it, I'll buy your oil and live on the street, just me and my super tiny bottle of essential oil. 😂

My mother is really into alternative things like essential oils, all kinds of powders, alternative meds etc etc and i already decided if i ever get diagnosed w cancer i will never never never ever tell my family because of this.
Friends mother sneaked vitamins, etc into her shake after she started chemo. Dr. had said nothing of the sort, they could stimulate things they are trying to kill.
A family member sells Young Living and is fully immersed in its ridiculousness. Back when she started, she would have us smell different oils. According to YL, the ones you think smell bad or react negatively to are the ones you actually need. What a sales tactic. Sell oils people hate because you say that’s their body telling them they need it. And never mind the fact that most of them make me wheeze. Those are the ones I “need.”
I know right? It‘s so counter-intuitive. They totally meddle with one‘s common sense. I think it‘s manipulation. Another strategy to make people give up their thinking and make them more easy to control.
There is something existentially terrifying about this women like, tearing up about this “demonic” book and James just on the other half of the screen calmly doing his brows, it has super villain origin energy
"Is Satan royal diamond crown status?!" 😂 As a Christian, I get so frustrated when people use this faith to pad their bank accounts. I once went to a Young Living sales pitch. (I think it was back in 2018; I went mainly to see old friends.) The cheapest thing was like $200! I was pushed pretty hard. I didn't buy. (You see, it's easy not to buy when you actually stick to a budget.) I was the ONLY person there who didn't make a purchase -- and there were probably 3 dozen+ ladies there. I don't recall any mentions about the Christian side of the business (other than that it was a Christian company -- supposedly) but there were plenty of health claims. As someone in the medical field, I asked about these claims after the videos, and I was never given any research. Shocking, I know. I've never been again natural remedies/alternative medicine. (I mean, I'm a huge believer that food can often heal.) But claims demean research & science!
That "Is Satan royal diamond crown status" quote reminds me of a Bendy and the Ink Machine comic where Bendy (who is a cartoon DEMON mind you) is LEGIT pitching a cartoon idea to a board of executives! 😆😆
I almost got suckered into this. It was such a trip. I dabble in making things and I made a sugar scrub and oil based perfume for myself. I had a friend who knew this woman from her church who did these little class/mini events at her home. Like a arts and craft thing. Even the seller that was trying to get us in it was having reactions to using it so much. It like blocked her pores all over her body and was causing her to retain it. Her skin was just awful. I still make my own perfume, just not with YL products. They stole almost $500 out of my bank account. Saying it was because I added things to my cart, they were processing it as my order. Being on the phone with their customer service gave me an honest to goodness panic attack, which sent me into an asthma attack. I ended up in the hospital because I really couldn't breathe. The first person I spoke to, that sent me to the hospital, said he was not going to get a higher up because it was not that serious. After I was admitted into the hospital, I used a chat and that person didn't believe I was in the hospital, so I sent a selfie. He refunded me my money and told me that since the order was mailed out, all I would have to do is refuse the delivery. He said he would call back on the day it was scheduled to be delivered and he did. He heard me tell the post office to return to sender. Afterwards he told me that whatever happens now, I wouldn't have to worry about anything. He was probably bending over backwards so I wouldn't sue. I had just started my job, I only wanted my paycheck back.
My partner just came into the room to hand me a cup of tea. Watched a little bit of the video then said "sucks we have too much of a conscience to screw these idiots over too, we'd rake it in". I almost lost my tea, of course he says that 😂 Context: my partner is from a christian/catholic family, went to a religious school, etc. As an adult though he is non-religious.
I am a scientist and I get goosebumps when I hear people curing cancer and other diseases with unconventional treatment like essential oils. Ethically is very wrong to take advantage of desperate people who would try anything to get cured. Shame on them.
What about curing cancer by eating lots of plants and baking soda to turn your body PH alkaline? I heard that cancer can't grow in an alkaline environment. Is this BS in your opinion?
@@annmiller1823 acid-base homeostasis aka your body regulates its pH balance. It is not possible to alter your body pH (blood) through food, and your kidneys are responsible for removing acids & regulating blood pH (along with other systems). @@annmiller1823 yes it is BS, at least from a scientific point of view. Like James said: you can believe whatever you want, but when it comes to health and fight diseases, beliefs are simply not enough to get cured.

My cousin used to work in the young living corporate office as their head of marketing. She worked directly under Gary Young, and has some of the craziest stories I’ve ever heard. Gary Young served a prison sentence for infanticide and impersonating a doctor after he held his new born daughter underwater for too long in a botched water-birth. During that time, he met the director of formulation Marc Schreuder who was in jail for killing his grandfather. They made Marc’s story into a TV movie, because of how prominent a figure his grandfather was. The way this company was founded is just super crazy, and Gary Young was kind of insane. My cousin was somewhat traumatized after working for him and I’m glad she got out a while ago and has a better job now.
He died of asphyxiation. Just like his daughter. A fitting end imo for a man who was either profoundly deluded or willfully evil until his final moments.
I was in Young living up until about four years ago. Funny how they make you feel like family while you’re in it making them money but yet when you decide to leave because I couldn’t afford to spend the $100 just to get my $65 check, they drop you like you never existed.
I’m really enjoying this series you’re doing about exposing corporate beauty controversies. I’ve also converted my lovely mother into a Welsh Twins fan; she says she could listen to you guys giggle and joke all day. 💕
Even working for mainstream cosmetic brands (not MLM) has a cult like feeling and there is a LOT of gaslighting of staff and toxic positivity. Never again!!
LOVEDDD it. Love anti-MLM. Love conspiracy theories. Love when beauty turns ugly. Literally & unequivocally love every single creation you’ve put on the platform for us. Much love, James. You’re amazing! Side note: Can’t wait for the next season if the podcast 😍🥰
Ironically enough watching this made me realize that everyone I know who swears by essential oils & have fallen into the MLM trap have chronic illnesses. Extremely gross to take advantage of people who need something to believe in.
What kills me is that Garry Young delivered one of his children at his own clinic. He held his daughters under the water, claiming she could breathe because if babies could breathe in the wombs they can underwater after being born because "the cord was still intact." He should've gotten life, IMO, but he didn't. And this was before the cancer patient, so he kept going after unaliving his own daughter. It happened in WA state where I grew up.
"Everything is just allegedly in my opinion for legal reasons" oh my god I am using this in all of my conversations now 😂😂😂😂😂 no one will ever find a comeback to that 😂😂😂😂😂😂
the secret and even some life coaching is NOT harmless. when trying to move on from my cult upbringing, i found the secret and proceeded to beat myself up for years because i couldnt keep my thoughts positive enough and fix my life, including self harm that lead to brain damage. i KNEW everything bad that ever happened to me way my fault because the law of attraction says our lives are shaped by our thoughts and feelings. i have cptsd and a few other severe mental health probs and i need medication and care or i cant control whats going on in my head, as well as having a hard time keeping my life together. again, the language of the secret had me convinced all this was my fault because i "let" my thoughts and emotions get bad.

When I was first getting into essential oils for like room sprays and cleaners, I met a lot of YL consultants trying to sell everything to me. There was a woman who was trying to sell me the "cure to my daughter's autism" using 3 essential oil blends lol
‼️Yeah they are absolutely vile! I'm an in-home geriatric nurse and one of my patients had severe Alzheimer's he was in the middle to late stages. And he was on his 7th wife she was like 30 years younger than him she was like mid-40s. And OBSESSED with young living. She obviously married him for his money and then because they were married she basically had power of attorney over him. So she refused to give him the medicine his doctor prescribed because he was paranoid and scared all the time and kept trying to run away from the house. So instead of treating his Alzheimer's with REAL medication that would really help him she would try to treat his Alzheimer's with essential oils. And it wasn't his fault but he was a really stressful and nightmare client to work with because his wife refused to give him medicine! He would sun down really bad and the whole thing was just a disaster. I f****** hated her guts. I tried to go to bat for him, I tried to advocate for him, I tried to do everything I could but there was nothing I could do. He developed Alzheimer's after they got married and after he changed his will. There's nothing his children could do. Frankly I saw it as elder abuse and I reported her and was removed as his nurse. I have no idea what happened to him due to HIPAA laws they can't tell me because he's no longer my patient. But it was so frustrating and it hurt my heart so much. This was 4 years ago and I still think about him all the time. I doubt he's alive anymore but I f****** hate that b**** and she deserves to be scammed by Young living and I hope she loses every single f****** dime she inherited to pyramid schemes.

As someone who gets chronic migraines, I do love me some peppermint oil, but I also love my prescription medications. I take my daily preventative meds and my medication for when a migraine attack comes on, but there’s nothing wrong with finding something soothing in essential oils. Just stop thinking it’s going to “cure” everything. And remember not to go out in the sun with oils on your skin! I remember my best friends mother in high school thinking she could get rid of my gal stones with essential oils and trying to talk me out of surgery. She was a sweet lady but that was absolutely nutty.
My mother used to buy tons of essential oil’s from young living because she was influenced and made to think it’d be the miracle cure for her pains associated with lupus and arthritis. She’d even give oils to me because she was constantly buying them and all I would do is use them to diffuse and make my room smell nice. Years ago when she told me that she has to purchase from a coworker who sells Young Living to get her oil, I thought that was so weird because everything can easily be bought online nowadays. I didn’t know what an MLM was at the time and I don’t think she did either. She probably spent hundreds on oil from her coworker until she realized that a majority of it she does not need, and that the things she actually does like didn’t really do anything for her either. Thankfully she didn’t start selling them, but she was one step away from being conned into it. Young Living was super predatory and really made her feel like she had to constantly buy from them every week to not lose access to their products. It was a huge waste of her hard earned money on stuff that she was told would help her. I truly wish MLM’s were shut down and outlawed. I really loved this video and I would loooove to see more like this as well 💜
As a Christian I loved this video. I do believe ppl will follow religion blindly which honestly makes a lot of them more vulnerable to being scammed. Religion has been a tool for control since the beginning of time and I feel bad for the customers that had to suffer
it took me a very long time but i am so happy that i’m no longer belong in “mormon”. it’s no secret that mlm is huge in mormon community… it hurts me to see people around me wasting money and emotions with mlm companies believing it’s going to cure them. i mostly feel bad because they always target vulnerable people tricking them that they can own a business and earn significant income. i am so glad you are talking about young living and how awful they are!
I think a big part of the draw is the idea that a woman should be in the home, caring for the children, should get married and start popping out kids really young so higher education kind of goes out the window. This would make sense as to how so many of them get duped into believing in the products, so being able to sell the (useless) products they now believe in and make (read: NOT) a little extra income to “supplement” their husband’s helps them feel more important? Empowered? That’s the vibe I get anyway.
It’s interesting to see how there’s still differences within one group. I’m a Latter Day Saint (aka “Mormon”), born and raised, and my parents always taught me that God’s medicine is actually doctors and real medicine (ie. God blessed us with brilliant people who have those ideas to keep us healthy).
THANK YOU FOR THIS. Have you looked more into the founder, Gary?? Weeeird stories about him. I was raised with yleo since around 2015 just when my teens began, and my mom is still a member of the company. She makes monthly payments in order to maintain her "business" when she is not making nearly enough to make a profit (as are more than half of the members). When you walk through my parents house it's like a yleo pop up shop. Products for skincare, laundry, dishwashing, disinfecting, illnesses, workout supplements, everything you could think of. Whenever I bought a product outside of yleo for my sensitive skin or disinfecting spray, she'd take it personally. She's not very religious and she doesn't practice witchcraft, but she believes the claim that specifically yleo has the superior EOs and are effective scientifically. When I showed evidence that the company was misleading, and she'd dismissively say there's evidence for many different perspectives.
Exactly like my mother’s house. She only gets their products because she has sensitive skin/nose/etc. but I think the YL is changing her biology. There are claims that Gary murdered his minutes old daughter by drowning her purposefully. Also claimed the “paralyzed story” has no hospital or any other records of any sort of accident.
@@julialucey4587 yes! He opened a fitness center or something like that. He made his wife give birth in the pool but held the baby under water for an hour. The baby obviously died and he was arrested. This happened in the early 1980’s in Spokane Washington.
Fun fact: when I was a kid I thought “witch craft” was pronounced “witch crap” I even asked one of my teachers as a kid which one it was, “crap or craft” and she said “crap” so I went around sounding like an idiot for a good year or so every time I talked about it.
This is my main problem with religion, particularly evangelicals. This notion of being “I’m holier than thou” all the while being intolerant, close-minded, scared of everything and anything, anti-science, which is why most (at least in the US) go down the right wing conspiracy theory rabbit hole. Being a good human does not always come hand in hand with religion
That’s true about both extremes. You can say the same about left wingers as well, intolerant, close-minded, scared of everything and anything, anti-science 🤷🏽♀️
I went to a craft fair (people sell handmade items, or MLM products.) I went to a table that had essential oils, and the women were explaining the basic stuff, I smelled one that made me flinch away, and the woman said “that means you are in need of that oil if you don’t like it. It means something needs a good cleanse.” And I was like that’s interesting, also it just smells bad 😂
It’s genuinely really refreshing to see one of these kinds of videos that isn’t going overboard criticising peoples religions and beliefs, just the ways in which they’ve been manipulated and can cause harm when you become too indoctrinated and rely on them too heavily
As someone who grew up in an actual cult, surrounded by Young Living reps, this one is so funny and sad at the same time. The attitude at that time was very cliquish… like if you weren’t using these specific oils you’re “NoT a GOod CHrIsTiaN.” The whole YL and it’s Christian following is truly so disgustingly hypocritical, privileged, and stupid. So so glad to have escaped when I did and thanks for covering this topic so well James 🖤
As a certified spiritual life coach I truly enjoyed this video and the way you told the story ... I love watching you ... I only just recently learned that you do not make makeup and skincare tutorials lol PLOT TWIST there's 2 of him! 😂
As a practicing Christian… I cackled laughing at this! I also believe that essential oils are NOT on the level as actual medicine, doctors & science! 🤦🏼♀️ Thanks for the laugh today James, adore you!
Practicing Christian, herbalist, and traditional living expert here. I use oils, herbs, supplements, and a whole food diet daily to stay alive. I was injured by a standard medical procedure years ago and now must keep epipens on hand at all times, among taking other serious precautions to keep death at bay. I am allergic to OTC and RX meds. I had a life-threatening medical emergency a few years back and guess what? I took the damn morphine (the only painkiller that doesn’t cause anaphylaxis) and the penicillin to keep from losing my mind to pain and losing my life to infection. I don’t use a hammer when I need a saw, and I don’t use oils when I need surgery. Shew.
Practicing Christian here too. I have some people in my church who do use YL oils and do think they are “almost” medicine. Like they go to the doctor, they have surgery when needed and take medicine. But they also heavily rely on oils for a lot. I am totally not in favor of them (especially since my mom is a nurse so conventional medicine was big in our house). I use a little lavender oil on my pillow at night to help me sleep, but YL costs a fortune and I can get an oil that works for a fraction of the price. I’m not sure why it is that many Christians move towards oils and alternatives to traditional medicine. I also have a lot of friends who are Christian who see naturopaths and take herbs and things like they are medicine. I don’t know- I believe God gave humans the ability to learn about science and medicine and then use that knowledge to create actual medical treatments.
Heartbreaking, especially the end of the video. Taking advantage of the seriouy ill and the economically desperate is disgusting and the popularity of mlms just shows how desperate people are. Thank you for giving warnings.
As a believer (not necessarily religious but i do believe in God), I am not offended by your video. I'm offended that there are evil people who claim religion and faith that ruin lives through mlm
GREAT job James! A friend of mine sells YL and its made it awkward and sent me on an MLM spiral learning all kinds of things about YL. You handled this topic with such care.
I mean when your religion teaches that Hebrew people came to North America 2,000 years ago and that they wrote their story on some magical tablets that oopsie no one can find... it's not a big leap to believe that peppermint oil cures cancer. Mormonism is a crackpot religion and it's super racist and anti-Indigenous too. Sorry that's just the truth.
Thank you for making a video on this! My dad got sucked into buying a ton of stuff from Young Living during the pandemic and continues to be sucked in. It's incredibly frustrating to see people get suckered into this cult.
I love a good MLM debunking, they are pretty awful and I discourage anyone I know from buying anything repeatedly from them. MLM = more expensive it's that simple and they have terrible corporate unofficial-policies. More please
Comical that someone who sells scams to ppl and lies to them about what essential oils can do, would take a “moral” stance and tell ppl not to allow demonic teachings in their house 😏.
A recently exposed organization that taught self improvement, NXIVM, was definitely a cult in disguise! I'm not sure if you've heard of the story that took place in New York. My indirect connection to it is one of the creators of NXIVM, Nancy Salzman was my mother's therapist back in the early 90's! And my mom really liked her and did well with her therapy! My mom died in 2011 and the story broke in 2017, so she missed all the insanity around it! Lol....just thought I'd share since you mentioned the self improvement movement is similar to a cult and you were definitely right!! Love your channel and this alternative to your regular content is awesome!
I enjoyed this episode, thank you for shining a spotlight on mlms and showing people they are a scam. I would love to see more beauty industry deep dives.
Thank you! You are kicking a hornets nest and I'm GLAD. I hate MLM's. I've watched companies like Younique, etc. take advantage of poor, uneducated women. They should be illegal.
They technically are, but the regulations just haven’t caught up. People are getting crafty with their taxes, pay structure, and business plans to avoid the ‘label’ of mlm so that they can still do business.
I know I'm late to the party but I just wanted to say how glad I am that you've brought this to your audience's attention. MLMs are making their way to the UK and there needs to be more awareness.
Man this leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I work in healthcare and have had family members with cancer and I’m Catholic. The fact that they are saying essential oils will cure those things is absurd and damaging.
As someone who's in the same boat whose relatives will go to quack doctors, I mean traditional healers because they want to avoid the side effects of modern medicine it's effing crazy.🥴😡
Love this one! If you don't know what these companies are, what these people are really selling, you can get seriously hurt in many ways. Keep covering these kind of things, you did great work with this.
This is amazing. My very very religious family members were big into YL and one certain one posts all over IG about the medical uses. This makes SO MUCH SENSE now
Me, woman who doesn’t believe in the whole essential oils nonsense but goes to church with a few that sell for Young Living. I am READY for the tea and shade. ☕️
This is my second time watching because I'm playing your list. You summed it up perfectly, you can believe in something outside yourself, or you can believe you are in control, the only difference is that and the amount of ritual you feel you have to go through to ask for what you want
Using fear and manipulation is the opposite of what a region is based upon. Anyone who EVERRRR tries to convince you of something and does so in a belittling way is more hell bound than you are.
I worked a travel nurse assignment in Northern California last year and it was the first time in my career I encountered a pack of essential oils as part of our utility room stock (in the Bay Area, of course). Ours were peppermint for nausea or headaches, and lavender for sleep, which I feel isn’t too “woo-woo” hippie-dippy. Seems pretty reasonable. And many patients felt they worked, so it’s a win 🤷♀️ I wish more hospitals would stock those little oil kits. My issue with DoTerra and Young Living is they give the impression that essential oils are a primary therapy for literally everything instead of an adjunct therapy, which is what essential oils are meant to be. Like peppermint oil might augment the effects of our standard anti-nausea and anti-emetic medications but isn’t necessarily meant to be a replacement. In that way, the companies and consultants are nothing more than snake oil salesmen. The other issue is that there is no standardization when it comes to these oils, in dosing, concentration, etc. For example, I have heard of high-dose IV vitamin C therapy for septic patients in the ICU. And while I’m not an ICU nurse and can’t comment on the specifics of that therapy, in general IV medications are given over a specific amount of time (and sometimes titrated) in order to avoid kidney or liver damage. Just like you can’t rapidly bolus something like Vancomycin (an antibiotic) or you risk giving someone a kidney injury or even kidney failure, giving someone a massive oral dose of vitamin C all at once can do the same. But how would the makers of these essential oils understand that with no medical degree, no experience in practice, and no evidence-based research? It baffles me that people spend insane amounts of money on them anyway.
You missed the part in his biography where he's responsible for the death of his newborn daughter because they kept her under the water for an hour during a water birth. 🤬 ETA-He did mention it in passing later in the vid. You can find the info on Gary Young's Wikipedia page.

I have an autoimmune disorder too, plud EDS type 3, which basically keeps me in severe pain for the first half of my day-
I cannot even count how many looney "cures" have been pushed at me, and it's really messed up because people who feel bad 99 percent of the time are in a very vulnerable state mentally, & for people to actually act like they even know you enough to offer some fake ass "this will make everything better" is just really invasive!
..my son is on the autism spectrum & when he was diagnosed, a looong time ago, the Dr that diagnosed him said to us, and I quote:
"all I know is, there is a god and he makes everything perfect "
...this was after me and my then- husband learned our son had autism, we were still in a bit of shock or just confusion..& the DOCTOR actually says that...she had no idea if we were religious or not..what if she said this to complete atheists??
Isnt that something drs aren't supposed to do??( sorry I went off on a tangent here)
Ppl have offered every kind of "miracle" and "cure" for my son as well...I am not gonna get into all that but I have a small circle of friends I trust, and I am very careful about who I let into my life because of stuff like this.
Sorry again for the length of this.
I loved the Prescriptives concealer!!

I used to waft peppermint oil for nausea when I was pregnant and it helped a some, but I still used anti-nausea meds prescribed by my doctor (which worked better).
peppermint oil is legit! i've even rubbed it on my hands and taken a whiff before public speaking, helps with nerves!
peppermint has always been the opposite for me and made me nauseous. it's awesome that it helped you through your treatments!

Yes this exactly
My mom has unfortunately been possessed by the young living “oily community” scam. She uses them as MEDICINE and it always irritated me. I wasn’t even allowed to have 100% soy and essential oil candles in my room because they “weren’t purified young living oils” and smells “irritate her nose” even though she’d blast seven diffusers in one room. a few years ago when my brother was 6, he had to have an emergency appendectomy and was in the hospital for almost two weeks because every time he complained about the pain, my mom just slathered his stomach with oil until it was almost too late 😞
Your mother should be serving time!
Oh my god 😟 I’m so sorry
Oh no! That must’ve been a huge amount of suffering for him. I hope he’s okay and actually getting treatment now!
Yikes. Sorry about your mom. Hope your brother is doing better now. Hope you both get the medical care you deserve
so sorry to hear that- that must be incredibly tough for you. but i think it’s really awesome that you can recognize that it’s a scam and that you have your sense and wits. hopefully you can pass that down to your younger brother so he doesn’t become brainwashed. i sincerely hope if you ever need medical attention you have someone other than your mother you can confide in (even a guidance counselor at school). try to build ties and relationships with others so in the event you need help, you have somewhere to turn. life’s not easy, but just by your short comment- you appear to have your head screwed on good. sending you much success and happiness. 💕

Sitting here reading this with heart damage due to Covid. Virus induced myocarditis is real.

The baby cried and screamed so hard from the pain that he had a seizure. One of the other YL reps reported it and they told her nothing wrong had been done and the baby was just "detoxing."
Oh my god
Aw poor baby . Chamomile or lavender would have been safe but idk if the mlm is food safe. I use peppermint oil soap though it shouldn't be a bad feeling just to be real babies cry when they teeth because of that prob not spicy peppermint ooo scarry.

The saddest thing about that is that if they had used clove oil it might have actually helped. They're worse than ignorant.
Ugh. Like...

"Is Satan royal diamond crown status?!" 😂
As a Christian, I get so frustrated when people use this faith to pad their bank accounts.

@@EmmieHunny yeah I totally agree
Just like "alternative facts".
Sounds like my house in the 80's when my parents did Amway
Exactly like my mother’s house. She only gets their products because she has sensitive skin/nose/etc. but I think the YL is changing her biology. There are claims that Gary murdered his minutes old daughter by drowning her purposefully. Also claimed the “paralyzed story” has no hospital or any other records of any sort of accident.
Sorry to hear this
@@julialucey4587 yes!
I dislike MLMs. They always make me feel cornered to buy something I don't want.
I remember learning about this after watching Unwell on Netflix. I knew about the MLM history, but the rest of it is just wild to me!
You said it yourself. Religion if they the problem, it’s that some people are crappy.
I’m with you 💯! Evangelicals are such hypocrites
Right? Hearing her IG story was a wild ride. People actually think and talk like that? That is so scary.
That’s true about both extremes. You can say the same about left wingers as well, intolerant, close-minded, scared of everything and anything, anti-science 🤷🏽♀️
Thank you for naming them 'evangelicals'! I'm sick and tired of them calling themselves 'christians' as if they were the only (or the best) ones 🤦🏻♀️
You definitely should do anti-MLM videos you have the absolute talent for it. Love love love this video
I second this! I'd love to see him tear into MLMs!
I think you’re absolutely right and well done you for exposing these hypocrites and con-artists!
It’s genuinely really refreshing to see one of these kinds of videos that isn’t going overboard criticising peoples religions and beliefs, just the ways in which they’ve been manipulated and can cause harm when you become too indoctrinated and rely on them too heavily
I don’t believe a word these people say. 🤦♀️ Love that you covered this.
my anti-MLM world and my skin care world are colliding and I’m living for it
I remember James once said that he's started to losing ideas to create contents. Now that he produces this series, I feel happy for him!
I know and I get the "priviledge" of moving near their headquarters. I may be unable to keep my mouth shut and get myself in trouble.
I’ve watched sooo many young living deep dives and I’ve never seen it so thoroughly dragged in such a nuanced and hilarious way. Bravo 👏🏼
I woke up really depressed and “we’re going to be talking about satan 🥴” is the first smile I’ve had today
Same. That head tilt and I burst out laughing 😈
Thanks for the laugh today James, adore you!
Glad you enjoyed it 😝🙏🏼💜
Practicing Christian, herbalist, and traditional living expert here. Shew.
@@monstermcboo7282 agreed! Also, hopefully your health is improved.
A Christian who is not admomishing someone to turn back from their sinful lifestyle?... 🤔
SAME!!!
GREAT job James! A friend of mine sells YL and its made it awkward and sent me on an MLM spiral learning all kinds of things about YL. You handled this topic with such care.
As a “Mormon” and Utah resident, it’s just insane and sad how well MLM’s thrive here. And don’t get me started on all the claims of “essential oils” 🤮
Same haha. Ew. I hate it
And then there's the "war" between Young living and doTERRA.....
I love this series so much. I love how James is just spilling the tea like we're his best friend 😅
I wanted to thank you for bringing attention to the toxic MLM culture. We need as much help as we can get!
“Not speaking ill of the dead” rule is dumb, dude was a dangerous fraud and just cause he’s dead doesn’t change what he did
im so here for some casual blasphemy 😈
Omg this is probably my favorite video you've ever done. I'm sharing this EVERYWHERE
Here in Malaysia, we call these people as 'religion riders' (Malay: penunggang agama). They ride on / use religions for personal gains or profits.
Hysterical!!! Your timing is perfect.
Feels like I’m watching a Halloween special in spring 😭😈
I agree
The exact energy I want to bring into this season ☺☺
Now I just have this image in my head of Satan cold-messaging people about oils lol
I appreciated hearing the history (and current occurrence) in your humorous but sincere manner. Thanks!
I found you through CC Suarez & I ABSOLUTELY ADORE YOU!!
Thank you so much! I love her! 💜
The video of the lady talking about the manual and the spiritual warfare... was the most bizarre experience I've had in a while.
So do you believe chemo cures cancer? Not look it up 95% die within few years. This world is sick and run by Satan not healthcare.
Love this one! If you don't know what these companies are, what these people are really selling, you can get seriously hurt in many ways.
Keep covering these kind of things, you did great work with this.
Absolutely loathe everything about MLMs

This is amazing. My very very religious family members were big into YL and one certain one posts all over IG about the medical uses. This makes SO MUCH SENSE now
No relation to Melissa in this story 😂😂😂
lol love tbe opening devil worship music and footage of someone doing the worm.
😂
Love this series!
Your face when you were talking about the dude curing his paralysis with essential oils… So funny!
I’m obsessed with this new series, seriously so good!
What you need to do is tell all your friends about it, and have them tell all *their* friends... 🤣🤣
You did so well covering this James!!! 👏 👍
I love how you put out the details on this one
🙏🏼💜I try! I feel like I’m not the best at putting a timeline together and including all relevant info but I hope it’s entertaining at least haha
This video was so interesting! I know this style of video probably takes a lot of research and work to make but I'd love to see more like this 💕
Using fear and manipulation is the opposite of what a region is based upon.
ETA-He did mention it in passing later in the vid. You can find the info on Gary Young's Wikipedia page.
