I recall someone mention on a reddit thread that Fedora got the latest KDE before Arch(leading to a joke of Fedora surpassing Arch in release speeds). A Fedora dev later commented that Fedora isn't rolling, KDE is.
To be fair, they've just recently merged KDE 6 into Unstable (and I think even into Testing now as well) so expect some update pains as they get all the various KDE packages updated and tested. I'm sticking with KDE 5 on Stable for now.
@@TheRob2D yeah I don't know what's the benefit of doing a stable install first just to change it to unstable later. No idea why it's the recommended method.
Thank you for the video. I have been using Debian (stable) myself for about 20 years. I would be very happy about a sequel in which you install and configure a tiling window manager (Spectrwm perhaps?) on it.
I wish you would of shown us where you specifically downloaded the ISO from. As someone who has used Debian since 2006, their website is awful to navigate. It still takes me time to find the minimal install ISO for their daily release of testing. Where did you grab the "mini ISO" that lets you select stable, testing or unstable?
I've been using Debian testing for a long time, installing from minimal ISO, modifying sources to switch to testing (something worth mentioning, using "testing" as distro release instead of its codename such as "trixie" in sources.list) and then building from the ground up with i3wm. I've gotta say, never had an issue whatsoever except a few applications that were a little outdated. I find testing definiteIy a good choice for home, not being an expert by any mean (so I would not dare with sid...). I just went through quite a lot of RTFM and nice tutorials like yours.
as a user from past 7 years, for me, debian is a kind of distro that I like to put on my grandma's pc for me, arch and debian are the absolute chad distros and now with the arch install coming in, these two distros are the absolute go to even for a begginner edit- you can like by double tapping on touch devices
usually i use the netinst iso (for stable), although with my belkin wifi usb the internet didnt work without having to transfer .deb files from my phone to it and install with dpkg -i. As an experiment i've upgraded slax(debian) in kvm to "testing". I think next time i have to do another debian install i'd use the dvd iso or install those .deb files in tty2 until it recognizes my wifi. It was a major pain to install everything from the core install.
Anyone who provides a download link for a Debian ISO should be banned. Navigating the archaic Debian website is a rite of passage and should not be denied to the new user or the forgetful. I love you DT
totally agree. there was one time, i think i tried installing non-free version of Bullseye... and i couldn't find it on a download page. it took me over 15 min navigating until i got fed up and duckduckgo'd (or duckduckwent?) the direct non-free subpage. thank gawd they include non-free in their default ISO nowadays, i wouldn't want to go through this again if i wanted to install Debian
If you keep Debian desktop environment selected along with your DE of choice, I believe you will get all the necessary files (like the display / login manager)
Just installed with the MINI.ISO on a new VM as per your guide using Proxmox but I chose KDE. It defaulted to the usual SDDM login screen and Plasma under Wayland. It seems heavy on Memory (about 1.5 to 2 Gigs). But I got what I wanted... A preview of KDE Plasma 6.x and Wayland. Debian 12 with KDE Plasma 5.x is my daily driver on baremetal. So now to see if I can get XRDP running.
Running unstable now on my second system. It has Plasma 6.2 and Hyprland in it now and they are running great. 2025 will be a great time to switch back to Debian stable.
I enjoy XFCE but wish the mouse settings had not just acceleration but speed as well. The acceleration can be disabled but then you're stuck with one speed unless your mouse can switch dpi. Even then it's a bit frustrating.
I feel like it's more difficult to find the iso you want than to install it. Would you please show how to navigate the Debian website to find the mini iso?
Now if you're really feeling ballsy you can try installing it with KDE. Everyday will be like Russian Roulette for your desktop.

Plot twist; I install it in btrfs with subvolumes and snapshots support so I can always rollback to the previous snapshots when things break down.
Debian Sid (minimal ISO) is the best!
No.
@@folksurvival Y-Yes. 🥺
Debian wiki recommends downloading the normal iso and then changing the repo to unstable after installation.
@@MuhammadSalman7236 This doesn't work great in practice though. I would always do a fresh install for Testing/Sid.

Hey DT, how's your AI integration progress in your linux workflow?
Dude i love debian
13:10 You should try now with stable to see if boots and confirm it's a sid bug.
I've ran through the expert install 3 times now and no option to use sid is showing up

Very, very useful. Thanks a lot 🙂
Good job with the thumbnail. 1000% better than the last one. Thanks for the Debian content.

I've been a Kubuntu user since I was 7, I have been interested in switching to Debian, but I lose interest when I struggle with the apps I need
Have you tried looking for your apps on flatpak?
i use fedora btw
Thanks a lot !
Speaking of unstable here's ......DT😊
Can make a video configure xfce look nice.
Debian 12 or testing will not install on my computer always comes up with no suitable kernel found
I would be curious as to how to run Xfce in Wayland
I prefer using testing, which can "downgrade" when it becomes stable
When the boot gets stuck, just hit control-d. It happens quite often nowadays. Must be a bug somewhere.
What VM you are using?
Great video nice to do something different
At last..., thanks. I couldnt instalo wine on debian sid. If You get it please let me know. It seems wine remove sid support.
13:25 When that happens you can just hit 'enter'.
what version of xfce is installed 4.18, 4.19 or 4.20?
Hey DT, hope you see this comment. Please do a "Arch Like" install of Debian using mmdebstrap, make your root fs brtrfs.
You need to update Arco. I've got 6.12.4 on mine. I'm running Arch (BTW... Always wanted to say that here) 😁
lol that ISO is 70 MB
Why dont just download regulary and change the suite in apt to unstable. 100000x easier.
I CAN DO THE SAME WITH.... well Devuan which is better...
Why is it better?
@@aurkom #2 former debian leader said it not just me. It better enigneered and has not systemD.
@@RHTORAS No SystemD means it's worse.

No systemD is neither better nor worse than systemD. I really liked using artix for a whole 2 months
I am a normal pc user and tried many Distros and didn't have any problems installing the well know ones. But Debian failed every time.
dt you seem burnt out on the whole linux content lately..
"easily" 😄
Don't using cinnamon DE is a great mistake
that's only your opinion.
mine is that Cinnamon is developed mainly with Mint in mind
