How Do I Get My Energy Back After Quitting Opioids?

  • Dr. Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and has been in recovery from opioid use himself since 1984, shares advice on how to get your energy back after opioid withdrawal. Regardless of the detox method someone uses, there is the possibility of Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS), with symptoms like low energy and insomnia.
    -Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 14 cities across the US.
    -3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA, Wellesley, MA (Boston area) and Willoughby, OH (Cleveland area) includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Rapid Benzodiazepine Detox.
    -Caring, Empathetic Environment
Dr. Peter Coleman understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

I started doing drugs since my teenage, got addicted to opioid. Spent my whole life fighting opioid addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was actually diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 4 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Amen God bless people. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, opioid, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health.

Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your wife decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

When I came off opiates, it took me three weeks to get my energy level to normal. Then, I had about two months where there was an excess of energy. It took about three months to get a full night's sleep, only getting short naps in the beginning and gradually getting more sleep. After about six months, I was feeling better than ever. To anyone struggling: don't give up the fight. More than likely, you will lapse or even relapse. Just continue the fight. Giving up is a sentence of misery and death. I had several relapses before getting it all right. When you go to bed, tell yourself, "I love me, I am free, and I will stay clean." Do this as you fall asleep. This helps immensely, as your subconscious mind will be programmed with it.

@@reginamushi6582 my friend, I stayed home and used the Burnese method. I started with .25 mg at night, about 7pm. Twelve hours later, I repeated, followed by another .25 mg 12 hours later. The following day I went to .5 mg × 2, but dropped to 10 hours. 3rd day, I went to .75 mg × 2, but dropped to 8 hour intervals. Fourth day, 1 mg × 2, went to 6 hr intervals. Fifth day, 2 mg × 2, 6 hr intervals. Sixth day, 3 mg × 2. That 6th day was my first clean day, as the day before was my last street drug use. I am 28 days clean from a $100 a day fentanyl habit. I have detoxed from many different types of opioids over the years. This is by far been the hardest most painful detox I ever been through. I thought I had done permanent damage to my body at day 14 I didn’t even recognize who I was anymore but let me tell you it’s starting to get better every day, I get a little bit closer to feel like my old self again. I know I’m strong enough to stay sober for the rest of my life. If I could make it through those detox symptoms I could do anything.

Have been clean of opioids for over 4 years, after a 30 year stint on methadone. A long, slow taper (mine took almost 9 months) kept acute withdrawal symptoms to a minimum. You might hit a few decreases that take you longer to stabilize, which slows the taper, but that's normal. For me, the real fun started after the taper with PAWS symptoms that lasted over 1.5 years. I was prepared for a fight and a fight is what I got. And it's tough fighting back when you don't even have the energy to get out of bed. It took some seriously pent up anger to fight back instead of relapsing. Now that I look back at that part of my life, I can't express how grateful I am to have made it through the tough times. Now, I sleep great, workout 4 times a week and have returned to "normal" except for low motivation/energy. Had my testosterone checked, bloodwork all good, even spoke to a psychiatrist. Nobody can figure it out. I can't complain though, I'm still a lot happier (and healthier) than I ever was on methadone. Plus, no more chronic constipation, tooth decay or hating the summer (methadone made me hot and uncomfortable, even when it was 70 degrees out).

    • @hashtag3417
      @hashtag3417 10 місяців тому +3

Well done, buddy, awesome testimonial. 30 yrs on methadone here (apart from 12 months in jail), I was pushed back onto methadone upon release from jail in 2005, under the guise of 'relapse prevention' the pressure to be released on a script was outrageous, on reflection.
I've just reduced (at home) in 3 weeks down from over 100 per day to currently 16 per day. I'm almost stable now on 16, I'm now gonna slow detox to zero. I dread the AWS but more so, in a way, the PAWS because I recall how long the PAWS was in jail back in 2004. I'm super determined to finally get free of this dependance

    • @theblackpit3159
      @theblackpit3159 10 місяців тому +1

@@hashtag3417 Yeah, definitely go slow on the taper. I found that delaying decreases until you're stable on the previous dose helped A LOT in minimizing AWS. The PAWS was brutal (which makes sense considering a 30 year dependence on methadone), but they have comfort meds that can be prescribed if needed. With PAWS, the recovery takes time, and it's a roller coaster ride, but every day gets a little better. Good luck to you and stay strong.

Getting good sleep while detoxing from methadone without sleeping pills is virtually impossible! I know because I'm going thru it right now! I do not wish to take any sleep aids. I've tried home sleep remedies and none worked so far. It's been very tough because I work 12 hour shifts and I started my detox at the beginning of my work week! I didn't sleep at all working 12s . I should have told them what was happening and took a week off work. Anyways it's been living he'll for a month now. I am pushing myself because it's true sitting on the couch is the worst thing you can do! I promise you that once you are mentally ready to stop the methadone it will be a brutal battle but you can get free !!!! Listen to uplifting music, meditate, pray up, and think about all the extra income you will have to invest into yourself! I love everyone that's suffering from addiction! If the answer is “eat well and exercise”….then, that basically translates as “we got nothing, except for just letting time help…maybe.”
The only worse thing to see besides “exercise” is if one of the treatments for something is “deep breathing.”….that is a sure sign there is no treatment but they don’t want to be harsh.
But….people are different and exercise may work for some, and no harm in trying.

I knew he was going to mention exercise first.. I've been through opiate withdrawal a hundred times and only once I was forced to get a job within a month of quitting by my parents and it was the only time I bounced back and quickly regained my strength and the depression went away and I didn't start gaining weight.. everything.. I got a physical job doing construction cleanup and felt tip top in a very short time, about ten days.. It's hard to start getting active and you feel every pain in your body I know but, you gotta do it as soon as you're able to walk about. Actually getting out of the house is the best way to do it also but if you cannot then do what you gotta do. Remember any little bit helps and is better than nothing..

currently on a methadone prescription at the moment, my issue started from braking a vertebra on my back/neck area, got onto Tramadol.. ended up taking around 10-12 at a time, causing me to have several overdoses which in turn caused me to have seizures, the seizures caused me to break my nose, smash my toe nails off! i have 3 of the overdoses until it pushed me to want to get off! i am now 17 months into my methadone program.. and coming off this is one of the hardest things I've had to do in life, with my fast metabolism I struggle for a dose to last me a day, so i get a good few hours a day of early withdrawal... not had a day off work from it yet, I have 2 kids so that's my motivation to do better!!

I feel your pain I know exactly how u feel I was on methadone 7 years and I am also a fast matabolizer, I never did get a full 24 hours of comfort from my dose. Even at my highest dose I would wake up with some body achs everyday and all stiff I wouldn't even want to bend over to do something untill I got my methadone in me. As I decreased my dose it slowly got worse. Some people suggested just drink your methadone in the evening or night but I always wanted it soon as I got up. For me it seemed like during sleep is when my body wore the methadone off fast. I ended up with 6 carries a week so during my tapper I discovered that doing split dose was much better than drinking it all in the mourning it made it last longer and alow me not to hurt as fast. I used to drink about 2/ 3 I the mouning and the last 1/3 at night. I did that majority of my tapper untill I finished. The best part of methadone pain relief only last aprox 12 hours so the split dose is oftin given to people like us or to people on methadone for pain management. I still found the tapper difficult and long but had I had to drink all my dose at once the whole time I don't think I could have come off it. I suggest you try it it's a game changer and I feel it can help u that boost in the evening or night makes all the difference.

I started using brown sugar for the first time from March 2016 till July 2017 and in the same month my family sent me to a rehab and I came back to home after a year in August 2018 and till march 2019 but relapsed in April 2019 and used opioids since then till feb 2020 and then I got to know about buprenorphine Nalaxone suboxone which is used to deal with opioids withdrawal and thats what I always wanted because the main reason or fear behind quitting opioids is to face withdrawal phase which is next to very hard and sometimes feel like not possible without medication however thats where I fucked up because before I got to now about buprenorphine, I used to go with the cold turkey way to come back to recovery and it hardly took a week for me to get back to normal state. For those who doesnt know what is cold turkey then let me explain that cold turkey is a way or method to quit using opioids in which the opioid drug user actually suffer withdrawal face without taking any help of medications and just let yourself stay locked in a room and suffer through withdrawals until gradually starts decreasing or reducing naturally and your body starts healing on its own....i know this way is not easy to go with but this way is the best way to quit opioids drugs completely without any dependency of medicine according to me because I gave have personally experienced the same and why I say that using medication to bypass withdrawals is not the best way is because I have also used this medication treatment for quitting opioids drugs without facing withdrawals but later I found that my brain and my body actually started getting addicted using buprenorphine daily and if I avoided it for a single day then the same way of obsession and compulsion developed in me which used to come in past after skipping one day of not using brown sugar and gradually i experienced that i was addicted to buprenorphine the same way i was addicted to brown sugar. Thats why I personally recommed that cold turkey is the best way to quit opioids by actually experiencing those withdrawals so that in your sub concious mind will try to stop you because it will then develop a consequence thinking that in case if you get a negative thought like if you feel like using drugs again, that consequence thought will automatically come and will clash with that negative thought and resist you from getting relapsed and remind you that if you use drug again than you have to go through that painfully, depressed and suffering period of withdrawals again👍

I found the lowest dose of Kratom that relieved WDs. I reduced by 0.1 g per dose per day. I held steady when I got down to 0.5 g/dose. I stayed there for almost a week, until I felt ready to finish. Droped buy 0.05g per dose until 0.1g. I kept taking that tiny dose to cope with PAWs. I know this won't work for everyone but it worked for me. I do not know what I would have done without Kratom. I was addicted to morphine.

How bad were the Kratom withdrawls? I take 10g a day and I’m trying to ween off now. I tried cold turkying and I made it 19 hours before the depression was so bad I couldn’t take it. The physical wasn’t too bad because I don’t take a lot, but the mental is bad..

I was on 60 grams per day of very strong Kratom and was extremely addicted for over 11 years. I have 5 weeks off of it now but have zero motivation and am sleepy all the time. I force myself to walk for 1 hour/day and it is sometimes like pure hell. Depression sucks as well. I came across this video because I’m trying to figure out when I’ll be able to experience joy and interest in things again. I’m 63 years old and have been told it could take me up to 2 years. I pray to God that is not the case. I hope things get better for you soon. God bless you.

Dude if your liver is that messed up you need to be introducing very high amounts of antioxidants and clean eating. Get this supplement called NAC. N-acetyl-cysteine. Precursor to glutathione. Research that well and use 4,000 to 5,000mg spread out 3 or 4x daily on an empty stomach for your liver. Also take TUDCA for your liver. Research Both NAC and TUDCA, they work. You can look into milk thistle too but especially NAC and TUDCA. Both of those things will help a lot. You will also need a lot of water, probably a B complex, and a diet high in different fruits and veggies for recovery. The liver can regenerate, don't give up on it and don't let them demoralize you. It can heal.

Just push for improvement. Be kind to yourself and encourage yourself for your improvement. Stay off of sugar and drink lots of water. It’ll force you to pee more, which will force you to move. You have the simple clear vision of things not seen in others. keep it up please. I have noticed in my patients a few that I've treated with addiction disease, that went in remission saying they feel empty. I have never heard this from anyone else. Then I was thinking about endorphins highest levels being in women delivering babies and I thought if we didn't have our own endorphins we probably wouldn't have babies or all the other activities we need to continue our species so maybe the endorphins are a lot more powerful reinforcers designed to maintain humankind.😅Plus they are a lot more important than we give them credit for and when you don't have them you're just wither on the Vine. so without your own chemical reinforcers you would no longer participate in making sure mankind continued. I only think like this after I've had two donuts which is the case today

@mitchwalker5172 I hope you are able to digest more bites of life since your post three months ago.
Opiates feed many psychological needs with a falsehood of an unsustainable feeling of well-being, the euphoria.
When the opiate(s) are no longer feeding emotional and behavioral needs and the mind, the self, has to face everything life throws at us, without that false euphoria that an opiate masks making life's struggles palpable, even the every day motivation to tackle the mundane seem an engaging worthwhile challenge one isn't pressed with the battle of the will to perform but rather skippy along and does it, without the opiate it's the self alone to confront life. That is the emptiness magnified when opiates are no longer one's life helper, coloring life in pleasing colors.
The emptiness is the psychological dependency that remains, and one may be far greater challenged by than the body overcoming the actual chemical, the opiate, dependency.
The emptiness can be like an empty bowl, with two options, to fill, or to not fill.
To fill, one could cherry pick all sorts of wonderful life goods and be amazed overtime what that once empty bowl holds - a testiment of will of one's assortment of unyeilding positive life gains.
That empty bowl can also remain empty with one just imagining what once was, that was no good, but still, one could just sit with that empty bowl in lap and of all of life's choices, marvelous, revelations of one's self, the bowl holder chooses "the empty." The bowl on the lap above anything else, unable to process that the bowl is able to hold whole other worlds.
Emptiness is a choice that we can permit our thoughts to entertain. Sit with the empty or return to the opiate cycle that I liken to eating rotten fruit past its prime or cotton candy. Either option will still leave one holding that bowl.
Opiod enduced emptiness can BE replaced given the will and the desire to chase fullness so the emptiness is put back in its place of significance.
I hope, three months later from which you included your thoughts about "The Empty" dear one, you are slowly choosing to fill your bowl with the wonderful fruits of life meant for you, and you are taking nourishing, tasty, satisfying slow bites. God Bless you, may your cup, may your bowl runneth over. Thoughts of grace, peace, surrender, serenity and awe be sparked and inspired within you through the greatest of all helpers, the one who sticks closer than even that of a most beloved brother - The Christ Jesus, The Savior, The Son of The God most high, the way and, my light. The Light.
Take care, pray for me and I pray for you.

No I only had chills the first week of quitting. I'm 88 days off percocets 40mg a day for 3 years. I'm struggling with Paws real bad! When will it end for me? Did your Paws just stop or gradually end?

Yeah, every once in a while you will all of a sudden you will feel withdrawal symptoms. But they don’t last long. It will go away eventually but it takes some months, maybe close to a year believe it or not.

Feels like your living in slow motion, through quicksand, its pretty bad…. I feel like a lifeless, corpse, the walking dead, feels like the depression steals your energy till you tap out, too.
