Don't label me as an addict
Joan Shepherd, FNP, has helped hundreds of people overcome their physical dependence on opioids, benzodiazepines, or alcohol at the Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine. Here she shares her perspectives based on a recent conversation with a chronic pain patient who has only ever taken their pain medicine as prescribed. A large percentage of our opioid patients fall into this same situation.
-Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 10 cities across the US.
-3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard package of services in Richmond, VA, include the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and an outpatient benzodiazepine Detox.
-Caring, Empathetic Environment
Our founder, Dr. Peter Coleman, understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

I have read the comments, I do have two herniated discs in my back , I had a bad accident. My life is no longer the same , I suffer in chronic pain every day all day , the lower back affects my legs , and my headaches never let up . I have to buy my pain control meds from friends when I should be monitored and prescribed them by a doctor , the doctors prescribed me such low doses that don’t last or work period. I spend all the little money I have on pain control, I don’t drink alcohol or use illicit drugs never , but my pain medication is considered a schedule two narcotic which makes me a drug addict , can you believe that after all those years of driving semi truck I turned out to be a drug addict , I still suffer even right now .

I'm warning everyone who reads this! PLEASE DONT GET ON THIS POISON! It'd better than an OD, but the long term side effects are just now coming to light and they are HORRIBLE! I'm literally dying because it's killed so much of my bowel that I can't absorb nutrients from the food I digest anymore. Doctors are talking feeding tunes and colostomy bags. I'm 33! Don't take this shit! Just get clean.... please I beg you

I've been on Suboxone off and on for about 15 years now. The past 2 years I've lost nearly all of my teeth, I've developed GI issue after GI issue, I have horrible leg and muscle cramps if I don't take enough throughput the day, and just got diagnosed with dead bowel syndrome wich means about a foot long section of my bowel has died causing blockages regularly so I wake up throwing my guts up about every 2 or 3 days. I've lost almost 40 pounds in the past 6 months. I'm 6ft tall always weighed 170 plus even when I was on heroin, I'm now 138lbs, I look like death, I feel like death, and I can't even stop unless I want to deal with hell for a month and not sleep for 2 months. I'm going to have to do it soon before it kills me. I wish I would have detoured off Heroin and got in a 12 step program instead of Suboxone maintenance. It's just prolonging the inevitable, and also block me off from my spiritual connection with my higher power, and now come to find out its killing me too. Just get clean, all the way clean. I beg you, don't take this poison!!!

Nutrition, herbs, physical exercise, and having people to talk to. It is the worst thing to ever go through. Opiate withdrawals are awful. If you have made it past 3 weeks, and still feel like poop, try your best not to go back. For me day 15 seem like the 50% feeling better Mark.

I took 3 once and it locked up my whole body. I left in an ambulance. It slows your breathing down and it can cause coma or death. I'm proof of it. This dr doesn't know the facts. They sent me home 3 days later. It still took me a few days to put everything back together. I could hear them and couldn't respond. This is the type of misinformation that causes Suboxone overdose. I didn't think you could OD either. Because of this type of information. But you can. Trust me.

Recently got clean off heavy fent use. The first 3 days was nothing but stomach cramps, nausea, mood swings, hot cold sweats, anxiety, etc.. After 5 days i started to feel a little better and I thought I was through the worst but on day 7 it started all over again and but way worse. I couldn’t understand why I was still going through it all over again a week into detox. Turns out opiates like Fentanyl stay in your fatty tissues and slowly release over a few weeks. It’s absolute hell incarnate and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Only way to get through it for me was to tapper on a full agonist opiate like methadone since the Subutex will send you into precipitated withdrawal even after waiting a couple weeks to dose since like I said, it stays in your fatty tissues in your body. Comfort meds helped a little and I understand everyone is different but going cold turkey off fentanyl will only set you up for a relapse.

I have degenerative disease, sciatica, bulging disk , rheumatoid arthritis, I was sent to pain management. I was in severe pain pain my blood pressure was off the chart . First thing the Doctor said we need to do back surgery he said that would help. I said no my doctor said to try pain medication he refused no surgery. So I didn’t go back I have spoke to so many people that had the surgery and they regretted it , they are in worse pain and can’t walk . So ya I think these doctors need a taste of severe pain to feel what we feel. I pray for everyone I cant work anymore.

It is no use until I am able to get a spinal fusion/disc replacement surgery. The pain is too much. But I cannot get surgery because I live in Canada. The doctors have prescribed opioids for 20 years and refuse to address the cause of my pain. So what choice do I have ? If I could get the surgery, I could get off the opioids but doctors in Canada are not smart enough to figure this out so they just keep feeding me opioids. How long can a person be on opioids ? I hate drugs.

Pain management is another way of saying that you are not going to get actual pain meds here. Our bodies have receptors for opiates and cannibinoids fir a reason. Both are natural based and dedigned from the start to help you yet these pain doctors today hove you drugs off label that are for seizures and depression and some others work on your seratonin to try to control pain but this goes totally against how our bodies pain receptors were supposed to work. It s all total bullshit. We each get treated like we are drug addicts or will for sure get addicted to pain meds without the pain doctor taking each person into consideration as an individual person. All they are doing is practicing TREND MEDICINE.

Clearly these docs have never suffered a day in their privileged lives from horrific back pain. That they mostly caused. I have a huge cage in my back with nuts bolts screws, spacers & they still couldn’t pull one of my disks back into place. Then they installed a stimulator as they then decided to remove large portions of my spine to make it fit, subsequently causing even more pain. Now I go for ablations in that area to deaden all the nerves & boy they’re happy with that cause it costs a fortune. Docs should not be able to treat people for anything they do not suffer with themselves, even pregnancy. If you can’t birth it then you have no idea what our bodies are going through. Enough of this archaic treatment. Hasn’t anyone learned anything in the last 100 years? ENOUGH!

I just came across this channel an i have to say this is the first Dr. That speaks about this topic an actually really knw whats hes talking about ...ive been on opiates 10 years last 3 of that 10 yrs fentanyl that i ended up with a very high tolerance. The first time only 4 mths of using fentanyl i felt the first withdraw from it. I had snorted a suboxne pill without knowing it was gnna throw me into instant withdraw for the next 12 hours of hardcore sweating u can move. Ur freezing to death. It lasted for so many hours. An i had snorted many Suboxone just had nvr touched fentanyl at that time. I mean i could do hydros n Suboxone together...well i learned a hard lesson. I kept with the fentanyl for the next 3 years. An nvr touched or wanted any other pill besides fentanyl.... Fent changed my body mind soul an spirit for the worst. I stayed knocked out all the time. I would sleep sitting up almost every night. I forgot what a bed felt like. After a while my ankles would swell my feet would be fat edema. I knew the toxins from street fentanyl was taking a toll on my body in a negative way that could really be none reverse able. And im 42 what guy is gnna thiink thats attractive. I always had nice ankels. Size 7 slim foot. So i knew it was affecting my heart. I worked as a cna 20 yrs ive seen swollen ankels bad hearts an all the wheeping they do. Its painful an when ur legs are allways wheeping through ur ted hose causeing open areas that can just a huge problem for the person going thru it. All i could think is thats what im always for my life to be or end up with legs like those. And i wanted better i wanted off opiates my life had become so isolated i was always alone...i moved to illinois from Arkansas in 2016. First friend i made here was a guy my new neighbor that was on opioids 7. Years already. Well when i go hang out of course i snorted so hydrocodone. An then he would have percocets..roxicodone...an well i had a job at a short staffed nursing homes. When i first started they gave me energy to go take care all the elderly at the nursing home. Cnas have very physical none stop jobs. Most work 16 hr back to back. Or 4 12 hour shifts a weeek in a row. So it was almost every morning on my way to work my new friend would text me the night before to always dnt forget to stop by on my way to work an hes got us some pills to do before i have to work. Which was cool i thought at first but in the downside of things i had just moved to start over an im already heading somewhere ive nvr been or had never felt the actual body dependance on these opiods like a body needing oxygen to breathe an thats the only thing ive ever needed to function was Air water food. This feeling of just taking these things 4 months first time he was out of a pill an i had to still go to work .. i was so low an weak trying to just shower an get ready. I ended up jusy laying in the bathroom telling myself i cant. Go to work like this. Hell im to weak to get ready drive a car to work an work like ive been doing my job an everyone elses seemed like. But that was the first time i felt pill sick. Dope sick last pill taken 6 hours prior to. An my body shuts done. It wont function becauses. Its depleted of all vitams endorphins. We would snort 20 pills a day . I nvr understand why he would allow my body to be like his knowing what It felt like an what it was gnna do to me. Maybe he thought i would like them as much as he did. Most girls he knew didnt have pill addiction. Anyway he was my best friend for the next 8 years until him an another friend just went picked up fentanyl on the way home car hit a treee an it exploded there car. I think the broke both there necks on impact so they didnt suffer is what my father the paramedic explained to me. He actually some guy went to bust there window bc of the gas an when did that the car exploded. Neither guy yelled or moved trying to get out of the car in flames. Anyways August 2023. Lost him.... The thing that im most disappointed. As of 1 month ago. Was given cpr to my 25. Yr old son. He was drinking hitting every bar in town. Well bars close at 1 he came into my room thank god bc he nvr hardly does. I didnt kn ow but he had stolen a fental😢bean from me. He was showing me videos on his phone. Talking. Then instantly his head was dropped down in his lap at first i thought he had alot to drink an he just passed out sleep. Well thank god that i love staring. At my beautiful handsome son. An i pay Alot of attention to he himself as a person. His breathing changed had an unsettling sound to me. Well then i start seeing big water bubbles sweat covering his body. So i grab his shoulder said jaron u ok. Can u hear me jaron as im shaking him an slapping him in the face telling him wake up jaron. No no. No dont this u cant u cant leave. His color was fading in a out my son was gnna die in my harms an his brothers will nvr forgive me or belive that i didnt give him fentanyl. My younger son heard me hollerikg at jaron so he called 911. Thank god bc im panicking cuz his eyez wont open hes not responding an even as a train cpr 911 lady got me focused an i started CPR chest compressions. Gave a few breathes. Which didnt know u dont have to do that anymore. Just put ur handss together doing compressions to keep his heart pumping blood flowing. Which his brother was saying i was doing it to hard but hes never seeen that done. Ive never had to do it but on a dummy.....finally an officer quickly ran into help an take over compressions cuz i was getting worn down. Paramedics went to wrong. House but they saved him they narcan him. His eyes came open immediately he wasnt to happy an was cold. But that next week i found that ANR clinic in Flordia. Its 25000 cash money no insurance only cash paid. I went to anr on June 6th. I went under anesthesia with a intubated while they used an antagonist which was Suboxone to flush opioids out in 4 to 6 hours depending on patient. I know when i woke up i felt like a crippled. I couldnt hardly stand. I was peeing an pooping in the bed which is normal for the procedure. U go in 7 am thry keep u one night then discharge u next day around 3pm...i felt so bad an just so worried how on earth can someone feel this damn bad in just one night. Well u go to hotel for next 3 days an a patient advocate stops by to ck u out. Well i cant eat. Cant keep from shitting none stop...on top of that i wasn't really drinkng much either. I had vomited real hard first coupple days after procedure an every i barely farted i would just crap in my new diapers. It was embarrassing i felt like limited to feeling independent but i had a wonderful mother that went thru hell with me an is still here with me. She drove from Arkansas to illinois flordia an back to illnois. An paid for my treatment. I dont want to let her down. However even tho i have took any opiods im taken. Naltrexone. They sent clonazepam an clondine to help with sleep or anxiety. Which i didnt sleep or eat 6 days. An i still havent had but a few broke up hours of sleep and its wearing on my mom...shes gettting drained...if i would have know this was gnna do this to my health i would have nvr took one. Big pharma should be ashamed of them selves. There should be more ANR accelerated neuro regulated facilities available that take insurance help more. But since hes from anothet country an just came here teaching other doctors this quicker detox treatment big pharma isnt letting him grow to big. But the thing i found most helpful is smoking a little weed. An i always hated the way weed made me feel. Also im on a brat diet 3 bananas a day. Rice. Dry bread an apples. Clear n sures. An i give my self a nad injection for energy. Ive been active but i push myself an the whole time my energy is coming an going. When i get a normal sleep hours ago im going out there to fight for ppls lifes. Keep them off what took my health happiness almost my son it took my light ....this dr knows what hes talking about. I would like to meet him an advocate with him. I would be honored

I got off doctor-prescribed Xanax, and it took about 5-6 months of hard withdrawals, some of which lasted a week. During that time I was entirely debilitated. Earlier, the doctor had assured me I would not get addicted to it, as long as I took it as prescribed. And I was on a low dose.
