This wasn’t really a devastating blow. The franks where at home with the main military force. The Arabs are 1000s of miles away. The army was a mainly Berber force. The Arabs at this time reached the greatest land expansion. They still controlled Spain
Thanks Patrick! I really wanted this video to focus on the two oldest sources we have for the battle, which really give us the most important information concerning the clash of the Franks and the Arabs at Tours. They are very brief accounts, but they tell us a lot.
@@RealCrusadesHistory I came looking for a break-down on the Battle of Tour because I heard about it on the History Extra Podcast, "Medieval masterclass 1". Tour is such a fascinating event, it has an inevidability about it, and fascinating to think of the people who stood and faught, and whether they had any sense of the significance of the event. A lot of these battle docs use a lot of maps and stuff, having you read the old sources is the perfect preparation for watching a battle map doc, because you really do get a sense of the people and the time, both approaches compliment the other.

Love this channel! I take interest because it covers the history that TV or movies largely won’t go into. I was shocked they did “The King” the movie about Agincourt. My ancestors descend from Nibelungids or Charles Martels brother Childebrand I of Burgundy. Our line is not so popular as the Pippinids. It’s funny too how my line kind of laid low in the north in Vexin. It tells me you needed distance from central and southern France drama! Looking at records I realize how dangerous it was to be royal back in those days. Childebrand’s line that survives almost intact (same last name chosen and kept for 900 years) today emerged mainly from the Tyrrell’s of the UK and their French cousins the TyreI de Poix family members in France. The Tyrel De Poix use the Chateaux De Forges, they received in perpetuity after Agincourt as a bed and breakfast in Concremiers, France to this day! I’m sure there are a lot more descendants of this line but they may have a different last name. Our family is American but my mother’s last name was Terrell, the American version. Unfortunately not enough documentation survives for every generation but we live up to Nibelung’s nickname “The Historian” our line has kept up its own history and has societies in the US, UK, Australia etc..😎.
What books would you recommend on Clovis, Charles Martel, and Charlemagne? It's hard to find other more in depth studies of the major Frankish kings outside of Edward Gibbon.
