  • In this video, we look at two versions of LOVE HURTS. Which is best? The COVER or the ORIGINAL? You be the judge!
Love Hurts - Cover vs Original - Nazareth - Everly Brothers - Which Is Better?
Which do you think is better? The original song by the original artist or an artist who covers that song?
Most people would probably answer the original song by the original artist; however, many people think a song they thought was the original is not.
There are so many examples of this, I thought it would be interesting to do an entire series on it called "Cover Songs Vs. Originals - Which Is Better?"
I think some of my findings might actually astound you when you find out songs you loved are actually cover songs from another artist.
This time we're looking at Love Hurts by Nazareth against the version by the Everly Brothers, and what we learn may surprise you!
I hope you enjoy my new series. :-)

FYI Love Hurts was actually written by Boudleaux Bryant. First recorded by the Everly Brothers in July 1960

You redeemed yourself just in time, Ken. Twice in the video you said that the Everly Brothers wrote this song. I was around when the Everlys did their version and when Roy Orbison did his version. I am a huge fan of the Everlys and the Big O. BUT...I agree with you. The Nazareth's version is the best. Great stuff, Ken. I have just subscribed to your channel.

The thing about Nazareth is that they put so much more emotion into the song which makes it really hit all the feel buttons. They took a good song and made it better.

I come from a musical family/background - my dad raised us on 50's tunes. (From my grandparents even way beyond that!) I cannot BELIEVE I never heard Everly version! It is very very sweet, harmony beautiful as always ❤ Nazareth took it in a different direction and I love it as well, now, with a NEW appreciation! Thank you!!

Hey, Ken. The singer for Nazareth, Dan McCafferty, has a voice that could cut glass. I was graduating from high school when this song became popular, and to this day I still almost stop breathing upon listening to Love hurts. Of course, the Everlys influenced many many others, and had a unique sound for the time.

I think it's brilliant that Nazareth took the song and put their own spin on it. Both are great for their eras. I've always liked the Everly brothers since I was a kid in the 60s, but had never heard this before. Excellent choice for comparisons. Thanks!

Yep, Dan McCafferty just a force of nature. So much power, grit and great tone throughout his register. Now there's a singer worth analysing, Ken. Dan is still ripping it up in his 70s. Genetics baby. For those new to Nazareth, track down : Gone Dead Train, Bad, Bad Boy, May the Sunshine, Expect no Mercy. A primal primer to Glasgow's finest.

No matter how many times I've heard the Nazareth version it still reaches in a touched my soul. I'm a big fan of the Everlys so it was surprising when I eventually learned they did it first.
Informative tidbits about who was influenced by Nazareth. Agree it sounds like Roy could have written it, something I never thought of but perhaps another reason is so compelling.

Great choice Ken. I've seen Nazareth perform love hurts. I got to see the Everly Brothers open for S&G... I can't remember if they performed this song... I can tell you they sang great. My vote Nazareth just cause you can argue they really did add to the song... Side note - I also got to see what was his name, Nick Gilde right ? Perform brother Louie ... Thanks Ken for making remember how fortunate I am.

The original has so much 50's charm and the harmonies hit me in the tear-ducts. ...but then Nazareth makes it their signature-song with everything that made 70's rock great.

We did this one back in the club circuit days in the late 80s. Fast forward 30 years and I got an itch to learn Rockabilly guitar. ( I played Bass guitar in my metal band) so I can definitely relate and appreciate both eras. Fantastic song either way.

I didn't know that Love Hurts was an Everly Brothers song because I've always been used to hearing the Nazereth cover version. However, as a sucker for vocal harmonies, I must say that Phil and Don, Lord rest their souls, put their golden touch on this song, so props to them for introducing it to the public, whereas the high lead vocal on the Nazereth version brings more life to the song. I love both versions, so for me, this is no contest!

I knew it was a cover and I do like both as I feel like they come across as different songs while being the same. However I prefer Nazareth. Reasons being, because of my dad I grew up on it, it was also my parents wedding song (one of the few they agreed on). And how I hear each version Nazareth has more emotion and passion in theirs. You hear the pain. While in the everly brothers it comes across more as an apology. The whole song is explaining why they are sorry. I think it's amazing that they made the same song give two different feelings and meanings

Ken, The Everly Brothers never released Love Hurts as a single. They did record it first, which was in 1960, however Roy Orbison was the first to popularize and release it as a single in 1962. (I'm sure you know all this LOL) I was shocked though, when upon a little further research, I discovered that there is like 42 versions of this song. Amazing! Great series brother!! The cover sometimes being way better than the original is much more common than i realised. As in the case of Nazareth's version of "Love Hurts", the original tale of a drug addicted Vietnam Vet - Sam Stone by John Prine, really shines when covered by Swamp Dogg, who brings such intensity and emotion to a great but tragic story that you really feel for Sam Stone and his family. This is one I would like to see you do.
In summary we always have to give props to the original creators of the work, without them, there wouldnt be anything to cover.

I have an interesting cover/original suggestion for you: Black Sabbath, War Pigs vs Faith No More, War Pigs. I was learning drums at the time the Faith No More version came out and I already knew the Bl Sab version well. But the drummer did things in that song I couldn't figure out how to do. Thus, it became cool. Plus I think the vocals were better than Ozzy's personally. The song didn't sound like it was aged. Now, the Faith No More version wasn't popular which I find weird. I guess the radio public didn't feel you could improve on it. But that's why I'd like your take on that comparison specifically.
Another suggestion is Radar Love by Golden Earring and White Lion. Similar thing to the Black Sabbath song

Talking about these raspy voices like Dan McCafferty had, you should check Slade. Noddy Holder had one of the greatest british raspy voices ever, loads of power and guts, but he also had extremely good touching side in his voice. Songs like Everyday, How Does It Feel and My Oh My from them are good examples of that.

Just TOO CHEESY for a 70s teen rocker..LOL Yeah, I currently listen to MANY XX vocalists on HERE covering the Nazareth version and WOW!.. they're mostly (22-35) and AWESOME ! ANDDDD.. In general, music does not appear from vacuum. When listening some of the groups or artists I was into in the 80's, you can now hear the traces or influences better than then. But now it is silly, in pop, R & B, dance they blatantly take sample without even trying to write on their own.
Nazareth version is an early stadium rock version, very easy to imagine the (now forbidden lame cellphones in the place of them ;) ) lighters swinging in the air. The drum sound is almost 80's.
Another song Nazareth practically speaking rewrote was Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight".

I never knew the Nazareth version of this song wasn’t the original. Mad props to The Everly Brothers for being so iconic that other bands would cover their songs. With that said, I prefer the Nazareth version by far.

The comparison was a great one...AND the cover was better than the original! I'd love to see a comparison of Silk Sonic's Love's Train with the original Con Funk Shun's Love's Train. This one was a defining love song.

Nazareths version is the one I know best and I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️it no doubt however the Everly brothers version I suppose would have gotten my attention if I had heard it in that time and era of music. Nazareth nails it and made it their own❤️❤️❤️

I didn't know it was a cover. I'd always thought when hearing the Nazareth version that it had some older influences. Hearing the original, it makes perfect sense now.
P.S. Love the shirt! I did a double take, thinking that maybe it was padded. Lol!

The Everly Brothers were a little before my time, but I am familiar with a few of their songs and really like them. However, I love Nazareth's intensity.

I was just watching Dan’s recent video where he seems to be playing a boomer dad who blew it. His voice sounds so rough. It was still great but I’m just wondering if his method didn’t burn something out of his voice over the years? Oh, I take the cover hear , all day long. Miss Misery too. I often revisit that German video that’s on UA-cam, which I can’t quite tell if it’s really a live performance. The announcer says something in German and then “der Nazareth”. I almost think that nobody has ever more perfectly epitomized that style than
    Dan.

So since you mentioned Jeff Keith (Tesla) how about Signs? I think it was originally recorded by Five Man Electrical Band but Tesla does a cover of it at every show plus it’s on their live acoustic album titled Five Man Acoustical Jam. Pretty good.

Great respect and appreciation for the Everly Brothers writing and recording the song. With that being said I'm more like you Ken. I really think Nazareth breathed new life into it and made it a killer song and made it their own as well. Thanks for another great video Ken. Keep rocking

I honestly thought that Nazareth wrote this song, i had no idea that Everly Brothers did the original version of it. I too prefer the Nazareth version, because i am also a rock guy, and i have always gravitated more towards that type of sound. But i can also appreciate the original, even though i get a whole other kind of vibe from it, then i do from the Nazareth one. For some kind of reason, i feel like the Nazareth version is way more emotional than the original version, don´t know why, that i just what i get from it. :)
