The Weller Bros. was a Sydney Australia shore-whaling company that operated primarily along the southern coast of New Zealand from 1830 to 1840. Though they had numerous vessels in their employ, none appear to have been named the Billy o' Tea. Anyone under the employ of the Weller Bros. were referred to as a Wellerman, but in the specific context of the song the Wellerman takes on the meaning of a supply ship sent by the company. A Billy is slang for a makeshift kettle used for boiling water to make tea. Tonguing refers to the tonguers, the part of a shore whaling team responsible for butchering the whale after it had been caught. "tonguing" being the process of butchering the whale carcass into tongue shaped strips which consisted of the skin, flesh and blubber. And these "tongues" were boiled in huge pots to extract oil from whale blubber/fat since you can't fit an entire whale in a boiling pot!! One piece of information that I couldn't find was how to stop listening to this on loop. Also, if y'all got hyped about whaling, do watch the movie, "In the Heart of the Sea". (Not related to Wellermen though)
These songs were sung for hours and hours at a time to keep sailor's working at a steady even pace for generations so maybe it's something like how a fear of spiders was baked into us maybe since these songs were sung for so long and so often and they helped our ancestors survive it could have been baked into us
The first group humans where ever a part of was a tribe, the basis of all music is a beat, what is a sea shanty if not the crew's beat? What is a crew if not a tribe? I don't think anyone who is truely human will forget what it means to have a tribe.

It's the message of the song that penetrates through the music for me. It's about whaling in the 1800s and follows a very real organization that dominated trade in New Zealand. Thinking of it with that context grounds the music as something that some sailors just kinda made up to pass the time and somehow it got to us, like a direct connection to the past. The phrase "soon may the wellerman come" brings bittersweet emotions from me knowing that the wellerman shall never again come.

That bass singer in the plaid is exactly how I expected my voice to sound after puberty. My voice turned out to deep, but this guy’s voice? With that voice he could play God convincingly enough that God himself would do a double take and wonder if he just said that
Yeah man, I wish I had a voice like that... I can just barely hit the lowest note i that but then it's so quiet you wouldn't hear it in a setting like this. Maybe I ought to learn how to sing properly...🤔
@@frankjuggaloheathen1035 Ahahaha reminds me of a comment I saw on Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain video. “Chocolate Rain, puberty hit this boy like a train”
I'm not the first one to say this, not by far: Sailors were stuck at sea for months at a time, sea shanties were made to boost crew morale and spirits. The reason why it's popping back up I'd because we are almost in the same boat, no pun intended. Instead of being stuck on a boat we are all stick inside. Sea shanties the way of the future.
Shanties were primarily working songs at first, the term Shanty was believed to have derived from the word Chanty, a chant to keep the crew in time when hauling ropes or turning the Capstain etc. later came the forecastle Ballads sung by the crew when off duty , these were also sung in the pubs when ashore where they were also combined with the bar room ballads. The army also had their own similar songs, as did the miners etc. They became very Popular songs at the time. So you see, "Pop" songs are nothing new.
My Choir teacher showed my class this, and every student (including me) demanded that we learn it The teacher said yes Edit: UPDATE: it has been about a month since we watched this. Im guessing my teacher hasn't had time to get us the music. He also said that he was gonna hire someone to do the bass part, but idk when that'll happen. As far as im concerned, it's still happening

Thank THE GOOD LORD for the beautiful music from the Irish, Scottish and Brits. Altho my Russian mother was born and raised in China. Lived there 25 years, she taught me "What Shall We do With A Drunken Sailor"; The British Grenadier; Oh No John, No; Waltzing Mathilda. Etc. Now THESE are truly songs , like the one here, that should be learned, saved and passed on to the NEXT generation!
Is it weird that I actually teared up a bit at the beauty of this amidst the crazy times that we are in at the moment? It gives me hope that all these different people just came together and made something awesome regardless of anybody’s background or story. Love it, and thank you to those who made this!

you who pirates are and what they do?
Not pirates. Well, not just pirates, but all seafarers!
@@lynnkennedy9040 please shush
Do you think the original brothers who wrote this in 1860, would have ever dreamed that their little work song would be so popular over 200 years later!?
Are you from the future? O_o
Well, given that they'd have had zero concept of technology, or the internet, or UA-cam or fucking electricity, I'd say that's a dumb fucking question.
I just descovered this song
Actually, 160 years
Well we have cats now to add. And that's magic.
The black guy that comes in last, his voice is softer than anyone elses and literally helps everyone elses pitch in your ears
Most of the bass guys look sea-worthy, but none more than the black guy! He looks like he would be at home on the deck of a sailing ship. The first bass guy? He'd be running the pub!
Yes yes very true good fact

If Tik-Tok was always like this, people working together to make something beautiful, I would love tiktok
I mean, tiktok shows you what you show interest in, so if you favorite a few hashtags, you can probably make your fyp exactly like this
I think it gets a bad rep, but it’s not just dancing.. lol
@@Milkythefawn yeah true
@@Milkythefawn ik ik, but still its hard to filter out the cringey bad stuff
lets the apps learn what you like, soon most your fyp will be good content instead girls dancin. Pro tips, always hit 'not interested' or block the creator that you dislike and hit love, comment and share creator that you really like. Its take while but its worth it! Mine, rarely already saw dancin teen. Mostly was tutorial/life hack or meme which I enjoy
The cat that was vibing his head was just perfection
It tickled me 😂
That’s all the kiffness did in this song sorry to say 🤣
Where?
Jk
so cute
The young lady playing the fiddle is absolutely brilliant... She should be so proud to have a gifted talent.... Well done and well done to ALL OF YOU.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this channel!! Amazing art,
Love the cat 😹
That bass singer in the plaid is exactly how I expected my voice to sound after puberty.
My voice turned out to deep, but this guy’s voice? With that voice he could play God convincingly enough that God himself would do a double take and wonder if he just said that
Yeah man, I wish I had a voice like that... I can just barely hit the lowest note i that but then it's so quiet you wouldn't hear it in a setting like this. Maybe I ought to learn how to sing properly...🤔
That guy didn't hit puberty, he actually beat the living dog shit out of puberty 😂
@@frankjuggaloheathen1035 Ahahaha reminds me of a comment I saw on Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain video.
“Chocolate Rain, puberty hit this boy like a train”
@@frankjuggaloheathen1035 Brilliant comment, I spewed coffee all over my phone 👍
I know right my voice was way deeper than I thought and it’s so raspy and deep my throat bleeds a little when a talk a lot
I'm not the first one to say this, not by far:
Sailors were stuck at sea for months at a time, sea shanties were made to boost crew morale and spirits. The reason why it's popping back up I'd because we are almost in the same boat, no pun intended. Instead of being stuck on a boat we are all stick inside. Sea shanties the way of the future.
I strongly agree and love this direction for us 💪
Let’s hope it stays strong
Shanties were primarily working songs at first, the term Shanty was believed to have derived from the word Chanty, a chant to keep the crew in time when hauling ropes or turning the Capstain etc. later came the forecastle Ballads sung by the crew when off duty , these were also sung in the pubs when ashore where they were also combined with the bar room ballads. The army also had their own similar songs, as did the miners etc. They became very Popular songs at the time. So you see, "Pop" songs are nothing new.
@Zelith Fang
That analogy hit the spot
There's this miners song from big bang theory , it's dope too
I like that
Not even months. These whalers which this sea shanty is about went for YEARS. Many of them lost at sea and back home no one knew.
This is a masterpiece. Should give more people like this
The harmonies are incredible. That bass is just amazing!
This is what music/singing is. Just an excuse for everyone to join in, no questions asked, and enjoy it.
amen
Not people doing cringe dances and the deaf people wondering why they want to replace all f England’s tea with apple juice.
His accent just does it for me
Most seafarers are Scot or Irish, nevermind West Country XD
Riiiight? It’s beautiful.
No one from Northern Ireland sounds like that except Belfast

My Choir teacher showed my class this, and every student (including me) demanded that we learn it
The teacher said yes
Edit: UPDATE: it has been about a month since we watched this. Im guessing my teacher hasn't had time to get us the music. He also said that he was gonna hire someone to do the bass part, but idk when that'll happen. As far as im concerned, it's still happening
Omg take me
My choir teacher played this too!

I heard this song for the first time today between two UA-cam commercials. (1-20-24) It’s awesome. Thanks for the posting.

I saw her playing with Dropkick Murphys not long ago, she’s amazing :D name’s Mia Asano
Doesn't hurt that she's cute..
I loved that part too!! Got even more chills

This is, hands down, the catchiest song of the last 20 years! Bravo! 👏

the problem with tik tok is that it starts you off in straight tik tok. If you ever want to come over here just make sure to immediately get the cottagecore and light/dark academia to hold the front line against them

What if it becomes a holiday-
Aye, the sea does not care about race, age, gender . and neither should music. A great way to for all of us to come together.
The sea only cares for the brave who would sail and we sail while singing this
Exactly, I saw a comment on tiktok, the tiktok was a girl singing this song in her voice and the comment said "woman ruin everything" it was extremely confusing because she was literally just singing the song like everyone else on the app.
This wonderful anthem is a celebration of the orange man leaving the US presidency. The world is happily celebrating..... that's my own version anyway.
@@marilynseptember21 lmao yes! I love it
Well there are times when having only men singing is a unique and powerful experience and can sound amazing! In this instance, I actually really liked the female voice adding higher notes, and then violin too, but obviously not everyone will be in the same perspective when viewing it.
