      These songs were sung for hours and hours at a time to keep sailor's working at a steady even pace for generations so maybe it's something like how a fear of spiders was baked into us maybe since these songs were sung for so long and so often and they helped our ancestors survive it could have been baked into us

    The Weller Bros. was a Sydney Australia shore-whaling company that operated primarily along the southern coast of New Zealand from 1830 to 1840. Though they had numerous vessels in their employ, none appear to have been named the Billy o' Tea. Anyone under the employ of the Weller Bros. were referred to as a Wellerman, but in the specific context of the song the Wellerman takes on the meaning of a supply ship sent by the company.
    A Billy is slang for a makeshift kettle used for boiling water to make tea.
    Tonguing refers to the tonguers, the part of a shore whaling team responsible for butchering the whale after it had been caught. "tonguing" being the process of butchering the whale carcass into tongue shaped strips which consisted of the skin, flesh and blubber. And these "tongues" were boiled in huge pots to extract oil from whale blubber/fat since you can't fit an entire whale in a boiling pot!!
    One piece of information that I couldn't find was how to stop listening to this on loop. Also, if y'all got hyped about whaling, do watch the movie, "In the Heart of the Sea". (Not related to Wellermen though)

      Absolutely....no one has any words which can oppose music or humour....
      They'll do things to make u angry ...n stir up revolts and violence....coz then they have power to end it in their own brutal way....
      When they face humour/music...they aint got nothing to counteract to it.❤️❤️❤️

    "The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the "Billy o' Tea" and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a "wellerman" (an employee of the Weller brothers, who owned ships that brought provisions to New Zealand whalers) to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries, with the chorus stating "soon may the wellerman come, to bring us sugar and tea and rum." According to the song's listing on the website New Zealand Folk Song, "the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco." In the whaling industry in 19th-century New Zealand, the Weller brothers owned ships that would sell provisions to whaling boats. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their hope that "one day when the tonguin' is done we'll take our leave and go". "Tonguing" in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and multiple whaling boats are lost in the struggle. In the last verse, the narrator describes how the Billy o' Tea is still locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making a "regular call" to encourage the captain and crew."
    Note: This isn't my original words, its from another comment i just wanted to spread the information to inform others more on the context.

      It's the message of the song that penetrates through the music for me. It's about whaling in the 1800s and follows a very real organization that dominated trade in New Zealand. Thinking of it with that context grounds the music as something that some sailors just kinda made up to pass the time and somehow it got to us, like a direct connection to the past. The phrase "soon may the wellerman come" brings bittersweet emotions from me knowing that the wellerman shall never again come.

    For people who do not understand, this song is about whaling, and the ship the Wellerman. the Wellerman was a supply ship, that went across the oceans selling supplies to ships. It was owned by Two brothers that had immigrated from New Zealand. They started this in 1833. They did this because whaling was a popular job. While whaling you were also out from sea for a long period of time. therefore, they needed provisions.

    That bass singer in the plaid is exactly how I expected my voice to sound after puberty.
    My voice turned out to deep, but this guy’s voice? With that voice he could play God convincingly enough that God himself would do a double take and wonder if he just said that

    I'm not the first one to say this, not by far:
    Sailors were stuck at sea for months at a time, sea shanties were made to boost crew morale and spirits. The reason why it's popping back up I'd because we are almost in the same boat, no pun intended. Instead of being stuck on a boat we are all stick inside. Sea shanties the way of the future.

    • @alangale5666
      @alangale5666 3 роки тому +20

      Shanties were primarily working songs at first, the term Shanty was believed to have derived from the word Chanty, a chant to keep the crew in time when hauling ropes or turning the Capstain etc. later came the forecastle Ballads sung by the crew when off duty , these were also sung in the pubs when ashore where they were also combined with the bar room ballads. The army also had their own similar songs, as did the miners etc. They became very Popular songs at the time. So you see, "Pop" songs are nothing new.
