They display incredible compositional skills per se. Their pieces arranged for piano sound like 20th century classics. Strange classics, of course, lined with melody. You have strings of chords that almost fly apart from an overload of dissonance. But they not only don't fall apart, they create a melody. It's funny that metal reaches such a level of abstraction at a time when probably all the major contemporary composers are returning to tonality and trying to communicate with a wide audience.
@@tomaszkaminski6495 I've remarked, that their death metal, much as with their cousins in the dissonant side of the black metal scene, reminds me strongly of late romantic and early modern orchestral composers, particularly the composers from Eastern Europe. There's shades of Mussorgsky and Stravinsky in there, and any of the other even more experimental composers (whose names elude my memory) that played with dissonance to an even greater degree. Even the constant flurry tremolo picking the stacked layers of chord progressions are build around is akin to how the string sections were used.
@@alexandersimmons3350 Scriabin, Bartók, Szymanowski... :D Yes, Ulcerate (and similar bands) have "reconstructed" the decay phase of tonality, a frightening and fascinating moment in music history. There is also a lot of death metal that is simply atonal or rather "doesn't reckon with tonality."

Cannot wait to see and hear them in Poland (November). Their music helped me a lot with everyday mental struggles. Perfect combination of madness & sadness.
What a crushing track with crushing ending. "This discontent is a mirror before me Countlessly broken and unbroken The air becoming thin among the disquiet Resurrection bestowed on the unwilling Embracing the last entropy Reject and betray existence"
This band has single-handedly rekindled my interest for extreme music, I do hope one day it's recognised for what it is, and of course, to see them live here in Europe. Cheers from Germany!
I'd like to, selfishly, import them to the U.S.A. but a European country would be good too! I think they would get way more exposure if they could tour more often. Being from NZ is pretty limiting, I imagine.
I agree... death metal was meh until my friend introduced me to Ulcerate. The foreboding doom mixed with clear melody... F anyone who doesn't like it. I do!
I don't know what I love the most about these new songs. The chaos of the beginning, the melody of the quieter interludes or the emotional catharsis of the ending.
If there's an album I'm looking forward to, I check to see the tracklist, see how many songs there are. I never listen to more than 20% of the album, otherwise you can easily end up listening to too much and spoiling the release ecstasy for yourself.
These guys break all kinds of personal rules of mine for music: songs sound similar, vocalist uses similar patterns and ranges, guitar uses “noises” (even the same ones between songs and albums!)… and somehow they are never repetitive, monotonous or unsurprising. What a creative and unique group. Killing it!
@diogobaia3738 no kidding man. Ever since it dropped I haven't stopped listening to it and because it's so good it doesn't even feel like it's been 4 years. If this new album holds me for 4 years as well I may consider getting an ulcerate tattoo 😂😂

I feel such undescribable melancholy listening to your music... It combines labyrinthian chaos with such beautiful melodies, and the technicality always serves the purpose of, ehm, I guess just throwing my soul into the abyss and making me enjoy it?
Another amazing song! And the visuals... An experience on it's own! Also, I liked how the album title was incorporated into the video... Very well done!
I've listened to 'The Dawn is Hollow' and 'To Flow Through Ashen Hearts' more times than I would like to admit. Now I have another one to add to it, while eagerly anticipating this AOTY to drop. I have not been this excited for a release in a really, really long time. I often thought about how they could possibly follow Stare Into Death, and yet here they are, doing just that. It's beyond incredible.
I keep thinking "this one is their best one for sure", but in the end all it means the whole album is of that same quality and the best thing will be to hear it all combined in one package.
Definitely the most unique track they've written in years. And here I was thinking they weren't ever going back to their more older, bleak, atonal style of Everything is Fire and Vermis. Boy was I wrong. Proves this band can still surprise me. That last haunting epic riff *mind blown*
The joy of hearing each one of these songs for the first time is such an unique and irreplaceable moment in the eternity of my life that i can only say thank god i am still alive to witness these guys deliver such majestic music. This is also the most weird and surprising song they've released in a while. Love from Argentina dudes i hope to see you someday ♥

That was fucking awsome!!!!!! I adore this! A bit more strightforward than the Ashen hearts, almost had some cathcy parts. But damn, the way they compose these riffs and melodies is out of this world!!!
If the rest of the album is as good as these 3 singles, this is going to top Stare Into Death and Be Still, which I thought was impossible since that album is a perfect masterpiece.
Not sure why but get the same vibes from this tune I had after listening to Entombed’s Left Hand Path - so simple and familiar yet difficult and strange, brilliantly beautiful and disturbing in unpredictable waves of emotion
This is the new chapter of extreme metal....neither predictable nor artificial...i love the complete disregard for the typical counting riffs so common in metal....this is above and beyond even in the dissonant Masturbation scene!!!
Omg, this is soo awesome! I mean, I don't want to sound surprised, with Ulcerate the bar is always super high so that's kinda expected, but god damn, this album will certainly exceed my expectations!! Second single is still my favorite, though :)
Best thing about Ulcerate's music is there's melodies underneath the layers of dissonant madness

During the MGLA and Ulcerate tour would've been great timing for a little apocalypse 😂
Is this maybe why there is such a relevance and timeliness to this?! Does the Kali Unga have a soundtrack?!
June 14th 2024 = AOTY day 🔥
AOTY gets bandied about far too often. Ulcerate are beyond that.

What we need is some guitar playthroughs by Michael.
For real! Dude is a visionary.
You were a band recommendation that was made to me today and I love your immersive, atmospheric sound. Dark Blessings!!
