You don't want to sacrifice emotional wellness for academic growth. Great insight! Actually, I believe academic growth will happen naturally if emotional wellness is nurtured.

I've seen that happen, Paul. For sure one drives the other.

Amazing, I said this, earlier today when reflecting on my own experiences surrounding this. I plan on creating a space around this for children and parents

Loved this. That you managed to weave in all the crucial ideas into 11 minutes is amazing. And your definition of unschooling - it's just beautiful. Thank you Akilah. And thank you to Tedx AsburyPark for opening up the space for this discussion.

I wonder whether those methods of oppression are what causes the mindset of wanting to control others and also being suspicious of them. Perhaps if you have never been oppressed and instead have been respected and believed in, it wouldn’t even occur to you to control and manipulate another person as you would feel they have the same rights as you.

Your theory doesn't hold water. I went to public schools and I don't want to control others.

@@lemurianchick so did I and I don’t want to control anyone either. Nothing is 100% but I still reckon if you’ve not been controlled you wouldn’t think about controlling others, and it’s well known in psychology that people often repeat what they had and don’t question it, I know that to be true in this context because I’ve been involved in education research for several years.

One of the most abusive environments for children- ESPECIALLY for minority and emotionally/developmentally challenged children- is public school
