  • As they say, variety is the spice of life. Favourite spice? I’d probably say Geri in that dress. What’s that, Baby Spice you say? Nah, you can keep her - I like a woman with curves: something you can plunge both hands into or stick your head between while making a loud raspberry noise... so to speak. Yeah, if all the Spice Girls trundled over to Whitnash and banged on my door beggin’ and pleading for some Savery saveloy, Geri’s the lucky one getting to wipe her big boots on the welcome mat. The rest will just have to cope with their disappointment and bob off for a little cry somewhere.
    Mind you, at my age and having been married for 23 years, I doubt I’d know what to do with her. I’d probably bore her with my collection of multifunction testers just as I’m boring you all right now, then take her to the Hungry Horse pub for a couple of Carlsberg’s and a steak & ale pie from off the ‘two for £7.99’ menu.
    But I digress, I meant to talk about variety, and when it comes to the world of multifunction testers, things don’t have to be as black and white as the age-old question of whether one simply plumps for a Megger or a Fluke. There are other options. When it comes to selecting an MFT, you should be sure to choose something that has the desired feature set for now and for the type of work you think you’ll be performing in the future. Brands such as Megger and Fluke command high prices; you’ll get something that does more but costs less if you look at lesser-known marques, although budget brands may have cut corners that affect robustness or reliability in the long term.
    Anyway, this vid got cooked up after our Friday job was canned thanks to APC Overnight failing to deliver Tuesday’s order on Wednesday. Or Thursday. Or even Friday. Feckin’ courier firms - they have one job for frick’s sake, and when they don’t do it, I don’t get to do mine. Still, if they had done their job, I’d have been out earning money Friday afternoon and this nonsense wouldn’t exist. Every cloud and all that… if indeed the existence of this video is viewed as a positive thing…
    … if not, blame APC Overnight. And Carlsberg.

    What an absolute brilliant video I thoroughly enjoyed that. When I first started about 25 years ago my first company use the Robin three separates. By the time I got into testing the first test that I had was the Megger 15 series the one with the Bluetooth that no one ever figured out how to use. For my company we all have Megger 1700 series. What I like is the automatic Loop test and the two wire loop test. Throughout the years I have worked with loads of other testers with various different brands Fluke is always on par. One of my friends has the TIS With the colour screen And that was he’s only complaint is that it drain the battery as you mention, his opinion is and it’s very unnecessary. I personally have the 1741+ for car charging. Absolutely love your videos. I always thought Robin sold out to fluke really interesting history of the companies. I have never worked with anyone with a Metral tester so I have no opinion. Corey from Artisan helped me out with a car charger and he had one that is the only time, other than a trade show To have a look at one.

    Megger 1500s were the best for their era imo my favourite MFT, absolute work horses. Megger’s 1700s were plagued with issues for early adopters which put me off, i tripped a handful of RCDs on no-trip, from then on these were a no go, they fixed it in later firmware updates, the damage was done for me. i moved to fluke 1600s and never looked back. I tried Metrel inbetween, i couldn’t gel, i’m sure they would be effective for those who be willing to learn and adapt, great features.

    As an old time apprentice served instrument tech (4 years 1977-81) I sort of object to the term calibration. What most of these services provide is a testing/check service. To me 'calibration' suggests you've actually been in there with a screwdriver and adjusted something if needed. But what do I know, got out of that game in the late 80s.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  2 роки тому +1

      Very true Ray, and I've always viewed the process with a raised eyebrow. My first tester, the Megger 1552 I picked up in 2012, I sent off for 'proper' calibration. It was away for a few days in a climate controlled lab environment where it was properly tested. It cost a bit too. The service offered by the local wholesalers is, as you say, little more than checking against a known source similar to my own in-house checkbox, but itself more sophisticated and itself calibrated. There's no attempt to adjust anything if it's out of tolerance.

    • @tceng9449

      In a previous life I was working somewhere and needed to use the factory's glass ruler. Glass rulers are very precise rulers (as far as they go) with built in loupes so you can read fractions of tenths of millimetres on them.
      I couldn't use the ruler as desired, because it was out for calibration. Which begged the question of whether they were going to attempt to stretch it if it failed.

    • @neil2742
      @neil2742 2 роки тому +2

      Being pedantic, calibration is the process of making measurements and comparing them to a result of a measurement made that is traceable to national standards. Changing the reading after the measurement is called adjustment.

    • @advertslaxxor
      @advertslaxxor 2 роки тому

      @@tceng9449 Of course they're calibrating something. Not the glass ruler, but the factory's bank account. Oh look, it was off by about 5000 too much. We've fixed it though, no worries mate!

    • @Raysnature
      @Raysnature 2 роки тому

      @@neil2742 True. I always feel the two should go hand in hand though. A pass/fail only service is next to useless IMHO. (Assuming the device has the capability to be adjusted, which is not a given now.)
      As an aside most of what I worked on was electromechanical and included machining new parts if necessary,; I got out when things started going solid state and became boring, often unpreparable and too easy/reliable to adjust.

    I’ve had my Fluke 1653b for over 10 years and has been a superb mft that has never let me down. I’ve used Megger, Martindale, Metrel, Kewtech and the old Robins lol. I have heard the Tis mft pro is an amazing piece of kit but there is apparently a learning curve to use it.Upon looking at a replacement mft, the Fluke doesn’t seem to be any different to what I already have. For me the Kewtech kt66dl ticks all the boxes for todays needs.

      The MFT Pro is easy enough. I think people are just a little sideswiped by the unusual form factor and touchscreen operation, but it's a nice instrument and not at all difficult to get to grips with. For some reason, Kewtech is one brand of MFT I've not really had any experience of. Those who own one seem to swear by it though.

    Interesting video as always. Wonder if you contacted the manufacturer direct if they would give you a service manual for the KTS1625, especially if it is an obsolete instrument. Some manufacturers like Fluke will issue service manuals where as other, Megger in particular, are very guarded of the calibration process. Never heard of Ethos instruments before, looks like quite a capable instrument though, and like you said, comes with a good strong case.

    These days I have a Metrel as main unit, Kewtech KT63 as backup, and of course a good old 1552. Never tried a TIS and you have piqued my interest.
    In my private museum I've still got a wind up Megger bridge BR7. It does 250v IR tests, measures continuity/resistances between 0.01 and 999,000 Ohms using a wheatsone bridge more accurately than any modern MFT, and also does Varley and Murray loop tests to help find underground cable faults. It occasionally comes out to play for fault finding underground and tends to wow everyone that this old thing can do something the latest MFT can't.
    On one occasion in the middle of the nowhere-ness of central Wales I dropped my Megger and ended up doing most of an initial verification with the BR7, much to the amusement of the plumbers. "He's winding up the gramophone again - anyone for a dance?!" (I'd already got a Ze and checked the RCD)

    Thank you for the tour through your MFT collection. Never seen Ethos before but like the graphic presentation of test information. My only question would be durability? This was often the selling point used with the Megger 1730 etc in which the sales people would happily throw the instrument onto a concrete floor to prove its durability!
    The 1730 served me well until I retired, and still gives good reporting on any tests including earth resistance, maybe because my original purchase included a hard case - very well worth any extra cost.
    Batteries are an issue. Where do you reliably source ENELOOP batteries?

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  2 роки тому +3

      Sorry for the delay Steve, Eneloop batteries can be found on Amazon easily enough. They're made by Panasonic. It's funny you mention Megger reliability, that 15 series I just got recalibrated again this week after four years of it sitting idle. Absolutely bomb-proof, and I'm thinking of putting it back in the toolbox in place of the MFT Pro which currently has a fault. There's no disputing Megger and Fluke are safe bets if you can afford them.

I went for Ethos because I don't do much EV work and it was cheeeeap compared to everything else. Of course, that may mean it's rubbish. I mention it for the benefit of current 1741 owners who enjoy your channel and whose device might be coming up for calibration as you get a new calibration certificate included, plus the ability to do EV with the upgrade. I am looking to do the C&G2919 EV charging course in the near future as I hear on the grapevine you will need a qualification to do EV soon and not just any competant person. The upgrade is ONLY availalble for the 1741 though.
    As for yearly calibration..... having seen your video on your Megger MTB7671/2 checkbox, I went and bought a pre-owned one ( we don't seem to say second-hand anymore do we?) On my NICEIC assessment, the assessor pointed out that as I had only had my Calibration House certificate done a few weeks before buying the checkbox, and recording weekly checks of my MFT, I didn't need to pay for the yearly ones as long as the MFT figures remained consistant. Have you had that info as it would save you a lot of money with the amount of MFTs you have?

    I had to send my Megger directly to them for repair. I questioned the wholesalers before their annual calibration day if their guys can actually repair Megger as it was displaying a fault on earth loop test no "yeah they will do the initial calibration, then if something fails give you the price for a repair" B***cks!. Eventually I called Megger and the gist is unless they are approved they can't touch it anyway. Megger told me the fault code was the temperature sensor had failed (although I couldn't find this anywhere myself online).
    But I agree I do wonder how good/accurate and worthwhile this all is. To be honest you know what you should be expecting with in reason while testing, so would notice if your own instrument started playing up.
    But this has also now led me to rethink who calibrates my meters. Like you say, all they are using a glorified check box? Surely the point is to adjust the Meters back to there required/original settings if awry.
    But I need to stop being a cheap skate where the wholesalers charge £25 for a check box and £40 for an MFT it's hard to justify the £78+ vat +courier to send it to Megger. Especially with the last one I sent via f**king Hermes/Ervi and the never got it there.
