What a great video! Frank is a true pro and knows his craft. Love that he is using the Solstice product. I would gladly pay a premium for somebody like him when it comes to spray foam. I learned a great deal from this video- lots of great questions. Thanks so much Rob for this video!
Thanks for info. I had 2inch closed cell foam done. It peeled shrunk from ceiling. Could not get the guy to come back and respray. So i think im gona finish it, off my self by looking for my own diy.
Back in the days of Bob Villa I was watching "This Old House." For one place they added 3-1/2" polyisocyanurate "boards" for the walls. They mentioned that this had an insulation value of R-6 per inch. So, when I put vinyl on my house I put 1" thick boards on as a sub layer to the vinyl. I wish I had a way to check for whether it did any good. I doubt it was as good as having a pro do it, but it's better than nothing.
Do you ever spray 3/4's of a cavity with closed cell and then finish off the last 1/4 with open cell to fill the cavity? I realize There wouldn't be too much of an R value gained, but over the whole house it could make a difference. Well that and my contractor ocd hates seeing an unfilled void...
No, with 3/4 of a cavity of closed cell you have an amazing assembly with no need for more "R" value. If you have a 2x6 wall with 2" of closed cell and a 3.5" fiberglass batt you will have a higher R value at a very cost effective price point. I wouldn't recommend closed cell filled with open cell in a wall cavity but, we do a large majority of roofs this way. 2" closed and the balance of open cell depending on spec.
I had open cell foam installed on June 2 fast forward to August 4 still makes the house smell like paint. I thought the purpose of the foam was to help keep house cool but not in my case. If course the foam did it's job had I been able to keep the windows down but because of the smell I can't. Keep in mind I live in the house where live the temperature is reaching 100 degrees.
What is best practice regarding a vapor barrier with closed cell foam with stick framing? What I am asking is, should I install a 6 mil vapor barrier even though I have closed cell in the bays? Good video!
I had some foam sprayed in my garage several years back and it smelled for a very long time ... they also covered my duct work into two bedrooms ... what should I do ... one of my kids has had trouble breathing for years now
I love spray foam for a lot of applications, however in my area, I see a lot of questionable jobs. So I doubt I would pay to have it installed in a personal home. As an HVAC technician, I see a lot of jobs. Some attics feel more humid then others, smell like chemicals or the thickness of the application is not consistent. Open cell is what I mostly see being installed. I am in North Louisiana.
Hi Dale, If you enter an attic with a strong odor please advise your client to have an indoor air quality test done. These chemicals can lead to long term issues if not treated and/or addressed. Best, Frank
Is there non toxic spray foam.....like soybean/castor oil based foam.....is it safe. My concern is that saw CBC news/marketplace, some house were sprayed and it became toxic because part of the ingredient was made out of formaldehyde
My understanding is that happens when the two compenents aren't combined in the correct ratio. Someone I know used soy spray foam and mice ate their way through the walls.
If you are spraying rafters and want to maintain an air gap beneath the roof sheathing so the roof can breathe, do you use those foam rafter vent chutes, or is there a more appropriate product for use with foam?
dtemp132 the foam will crush the styrofoam “proper-vent” baffles. While not needed if you wanted to do this it’s Best to use wood spacers and plywood to create an air gap.
I used to do spray foam, thank you for being knowledgeable enough to know that question, To me an air gap is best practice, however, concord is right and wrong, some of the vents will holdup, some wont. It would take alot more time but you can attach a furring strip to each side of the rafters and run some type of sheet good. But you can find a rigid vent.
I'm on day 7 of open foam. I still smell a LOT of paint, chemical smell. The contractor came by and said it would smell like fish. Ive left the door open, big exhaust fan on and several other fans going. Still stinks.
What if I’m just trying to make a sphere with spray foam? 24” diameter. Can I spray it into a beach ball? (Don’t yell at me! Haha) if not, how about a bowl twice and attach the two hemispheres? I am trying to make an ottoman and I’ll wrap it with upholstery foam, batting, fabric… what product is best? Tips? Advice?
I really want to get a good air and water seal, and closed cell spray seems logical. But, how to do you make sure it doesn't shrink? I see pictures and videos of gaps forming between the stud and the foam. Thanks!
Question with a new Metal roof there is synthetic underlayment and ice and water shield visible 1/2 gap between the boards .Will spray closed cell foam be a problem?
Great video I am getting my rafters spayed soon. The contractor offered a hybrid approach. Closed cell under open. Thoughts on this method? I am in the NE as well zone 5. They recommend an r38 for rafters and r21 for the gable ends. Is this enough? Option 1 is 2 inch closed with 6 inch of open and 3 inch closed on gable. Option 2 5.5 inch closed on rafters with 3 on gable.
I want to have my school bus insulated. I want to hire a professional to get the best R value. My walls and ceiling combined would by under 600 square feet. I want it to be moisture barrier to minimize condensation on the inside of the metal exterior walls and ceiling. I want it to “glue” everything together to minimize rattles and noise. What product should I ask for? What is a reasonable price range I should expect to pay?
I am curious to find out if there is a sprayfoam product that can be used to fill interior wall cavaties? We have bought a new home which is newly built and the wall betaeen the master bathroom and powder room is so thin, you can practically hear the person on the otherside breathing!
Mohamed Docrat you can us it for sound control. There are other methods as well such as mineral wool, rubber matting, doubling up on wall board and adding a 2nd wall
Its an amazing product when done right. In my home we cut our energy consumption by more then 50%. But I understand your fears. In every trade we have folks who don't do a good job that can lead to many issues. The reason for this video is to help folks weed out the potential bad installers or untrained folks. And to give homeowners and contractors tips for how to spot potential issues.
this guy has no idea about spray foam check minute 1:56 lol using water in spray foam rig.. that is the worse thing you can do, bro learn how spray foam industry work

Very informative. Love to see more vids from your subs.

How hot is the CCSPF? Do I need to worry about the spray melting my electrical and data cables in the wall?

Very Good Information. Installers need to be well educated!

Hi, closed cell is all the vapor barrier you will need. No plastic is needed with 2"+ of closed cell.

File a claim, that's terrible. You might be able to open a case with the manufacturer.

What is considered too cold to apply?
Would like to know also
Great informative video guys, is it me only or does anyone else see a potential Robert De Niro double?
Cheers

Whats the procedure if you want to spray foam open studs without a backer? Like a knee wall in an attic?
Apply a backer like sheet rock ect. This is for best practice. Poly can be installed and sprayed against if you don't mind large ripples in the foam.

Prob would work but don’t know what product is best for that application
@@ConcordCarpenter haha I’ll let you know how it goes! 😂

Viability of eco/green spray foam?
Lol i love that i sprayed for years its all chemicals nothing green about it
Very interesting !!!!!!!!!!
Would you be able to do a test with the different froth packs to see what works better?

The host was very sexist when talking about women. Rather shameful, really.
