  • Technics SA-404 FM/AM Stereo Receiver, made in 1979-80. Rated at 50 watts per channel.
    This unit has given years of outstanding service, it has a great phone section and would make a great Receiver for some one just getting into 2 channel HiFi. The 404 will easily drive bookshelf speakers up to medium sized floor standing speakers.
    NOTE... I was incorrect on the boost frequency's, its as follows...
    Low Boost... +6db @ 100hz
    High Boost... +6db @ 10.k

    I owned this receiver model back in the early 80s. Sounded great and had a lot of power, although it didn't stand the test of time. I think it was the colorful lights that dazzled me the most while it worked. It's greatly missed, but time marches forward and leaves old technologies behind. Your presentation of this receiver brought back wonderful memories - thanks!

    Wow, I just found this when bragging about my Technics 50 watt system from college days. I first bought a 40 watt from Dixi Hifi (later merged with Circuit City). But they had a big sale on the SA404 and a 30 day exchange policy so I upgraded. Its big power supply and caps were great for 12" wolfers and rock & roll.... I loved the power indicator in a dark room..... Mine was stolen in the late 80s and replaced with a newer but cheaper sounding unit. I now have Yamaha A/V receiver equipment.

    I had a Technics SA-404 receiver in college and a few years after until my apartment was broken into and most of my stereo system stolen. It was a great receiver to drive big 12" woofers for rock music. After stolen I replaced it with a mid 80s Technics receiver. More modern with a digital tuner but it just couldn't drive the music the same. EDIT: I just realized I posted below a year ago...

    I had the same one it rocks , I had a 600 watt Kenwood power amplifier, with 8 American acustic speakers hooked to it, I had 10 units as a system.

    My roommate had one of these in college. Fantastic looking receiver, I really loved the VU/power meters.

    I remember seeing these in our local Audio Warehouse in the Cleveland Ohio area back in the late 70's early 80's. I always liked the look of these receivers. It's the lights that got me, I'm simple that way.

    Don't remember if I had this exact model but when I was younger I had a Technics receiver just like this one. Remember the individual segmented VU meter. Very classy.

    Oh my gosh, it's 1980.... I'm in the Audio Warehouse store looking at this same exact unit band new sitting with a plethora of other stereo's and amp. I remember the salesman telling me this was not the 'best' stereo to buy. I ended up buying a Nikko. wtf. I wish I would have gone with the Technics SA404! Truth be told I liked all the colored lights on this unit, still do.

      I think a lot of "salesmen" were put off by the construction of the cabinet, fake vinyl veneer and Masonite. Kind of cheap I must say.
      The guts however do sound very good and all these years later they still work:)

    I have the model one up the line, the sa-505 rated at 63 wpc. I feel much the same about mine. I will not sell it. Excellent sound, plenty of power, easy to operate, and built very well. But, yes, this lineup was shallow front to back.

    Another excellent receiver that rocks I had was that Phillips 7841 black unit, only 20 watts a side 8 olms, very nice.

    Nice video. I have one that I haven't used in over 10 years. Tried to power it up but left channel output intermittent. Will have to open it up and try some contact cleaner. Hopefully it isn't anything more than that.

    I too have an SA-404 that a bought with a pair of Tannoy Stratfords and a Dual turntable back in 1980 - haven't heard anything since that beats this combination although the Dual is now gone.

    I have a Technics SA-404 since 1980 when I bought new. I seriously believe it has much better sound than the 7.2 Yamaha I bought last year and works perfectly still. Wife want me to get rid of but hate to throw away or give to Goodwill.

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  5 років тому

      Oh dont chuck that 404!
      You are correct, that Yamaha is not even as good sounding, how about a compromise. The 404 would make a great garage stereo.
      OR.... send it to me :)

    Technics was great but I remember the signal to noise ratio across this series was mediocre. I tested a bunch of receivers back then (1977?) and found that the Marantz line had a very clean sound, but their FM tuner and reception was not as good as Technics. I ended up buying a Pioneer 55 watt receiver but don't remember which model it was.

      From memory I do think you are onto something about the tuner on those rigs. I m going to have to A-B them. I may post a video on that. :) Keeping in mind my units are dead stock and NO mods or upgrades. Cheers

    hi, what is the loudness control for?, and what about the speakers for it? I am using a pair of onkyo speakers of 6ohms and I can´t turn all the volume control because the sound is too high.

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  10 місяців тому +2

      Loudness control usually will boost Bass/Treble at low to mid high volumes, as you turn the volume up the loudness will be lowered. Some receivers act different but overall that is the principal. ( Loudness is for a full punchy sound at low volume with more detailed and comfortable listening experience )
      As far as how high you can listen to the stereo is up to you and it is very rare to be able to turn the vol control up all the way without MASSIVE amounts of distortion. Also, the higher you go on the vol control the more amplifier head room you lose, meaning if you need to turn up the vol say past 1/2 way or more the music will sound bad as you are using the last of clean power your amp can produce. These are in laymens terms and I hope this helps.
      Cheers

    Maybe a dumb question.. but what are the remote speaker outputs for?

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  Рік тому +2

      A&B or Main & Remote... B or Remote speaker allows you to add another pair of speakers, either in the same room or another room/patio. If your receiver is hooked up to your TV you could use 4 speakers as a "surround sound" affect. While there are no surround decoding taking place it kind of gives the affect of surround. More than anything B or Remote just lets you add another pair of spks.
      EDIT..... No question is dumb. IMHO

    Hello.I'm a new subscriber. I just found your channel. I'm most definitely going to hook up Bluetooth to my JVC RX-5060. I've also been researching how to connect my Samsung digital TV - model LN32D403E2DXZA - to said analog JVC. Any suggestions?

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  5 років тому

      Your JVC will let you hook up BT no problem, But the TV, from what I can tell has no audio out puts?.
      So that will be a problem. Am I wrong? does that TV have ANY kind of audio put?
      Thank you very much for subscribing. BB23

    Hi Breaker, Can you explain how you run the sub on the remote channel. I would like to do that but I am not sure how. Thanks,

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  6 років тому

      Ok... My Cerwin Vega Sub has both RCA and Speaker level inputs. So I use the speaker out from Spkr B (Technics) to the sub. I do that so if I want to listen to music without the sub , I can just turn B spks off. Some Receivers will not let you listen to both Spkr A&B at the same time, if thats the case then just hook up the sub to spkr A along with your Speakers.. (doing that Should not change impedance say from 8 to 4 ohm)
