    Randy was sent 2 barrels out of around 20 that a client needs straightened. They are barrels that had glass blocks on them and though the barrels are in excellent condition, it appears that the barrels were slightly bent when the glass blocks were forced on them, when warm.
    These are two of the easiest he has ever straightened. He notes, with a grin, that he uses a Douglas Fir log. Which, IMHO, would be the ONLY type to use if you have a Douglas barrel that is bent! Also noted is that to straighten any barrel, the glass blocks, barrel bands should be removed. And it should be noted, also, that the front sights should be removed if the bend is close to the muzzle.

    Randy, my father in law purchased an old Spanish Mauser before he passed. It shots 2feet left and 2feet low . Thanks for showing this . Also I believe this is the reason for this rifle to be in such good condition. Nobody could hit anything with it so it didn't get used. I'm thrilled there is a way to fix it and I learned it from YOU! Thanks so much. It's chambered in -06. I put five rounds you could cover with a half dollar at a hundred yrds . Only problem is they are close to three feet from where I was aiming.lol

    My video library is growing one video at a time. I find it interesting how a steel rifle barrel actually snaps back into true just by knowing how to rap it on a good chunk of wood, but I do believe it. You're something else, Mr. Randy!

    about fifty years ago their was an older fella that had an ffl and you could order shot guns and rifles from him. I was sitting in his kitchen eating fired onions and deer tender loin with him and a customer came in with a complaint that his new Belgium browning shot to the left. the ffl dealer excused him self and took a greasy looking kitchen towel and the shotgun out the side door and thu the kitchen window I observed him putting the shotgun barrel in the crotch of a tree and bent the barrel with slight nudge, gave the shotgun back to the customer. (customer never saw what he did). the Customer came back very happy that the browning 16 ga. shot a perfect shot pattern and asked how did he correct the shot pattern, the old fella told him it was a secret. I was shocked to see this but it worked !

      This is Cathy, the Real Gunsmith's Wife. That is an area I'd like to do, but I've not been satisfied with my videos of the ones we've tried so far. I need more practice, which I'm going to do more of when the weather is nicer. The man who started the video work for us, and did so for 18 months or so, was a professional. His videos are the benchmark I "aim for" [pun intended but true, nontheless!] When he moved on, I took over the video production/editing, etc. An old dog can learn new tricks, it just takes us longer. ;)

    I saw a video on 1903 Springfield barrel production they’d just stick it between 2 posts and flex em a bit to straighten em they spent about 5-6 seconds per barrel . So I had a good idea it was a quick easy thing. I’ve never personally needed to or saw the need. Oh I did do a ak once that was shooting a bit to the side and didn’t wanna crank my front sight post over. Atleast not to far.

    I have an old AR15 barrel that shoots so far to one side that I had to crank the rear sight all the way to the left to compensate. I'm going to pull it and put it on my lathe to check for wobble. If I find any, I may try your whacking method to tune it.

      @@TheRealGunsmith I pulled the barrel and stripped it, then eyeballed the bore but saw no bend. I checked the bore with my 2" long rod gauges. The largest one that would slide all the way through was 0.219", however .220" gauge went in about nine inches from the breech before encountering strong resistance. A three foot long 0.2188" diameter rod also went in about nine or ten inches from the breech. I then mounted the barrel on the lathe with the muzzle in a live center and the back shoulder trued up on a four jaw chuck. Since this is an old tapered M-16 barrel that someone chopped to 16.5", it was impossible to take consistent measurements along its length, so I ran the lathe at 200 rpm and looked for wobble. I saw very little but I did mark a spot 8" from the breech three times with a Sharpie. I measured this high spot as being .009" out of round from the low side, located between the 10 and 11 o'clock position when viewed from the breech. Since the rifle is shooting to the right, I'm not sure if this corresponds with the problem. I'm now wondering if the issue might have been due to the barrel nut being too loose or the fact that one of the front sight base pins was extremely difficult to remove. Before reinserting the FSB pins, I reamed the holes so that gorilla force was not required to insert or remove them. I also torqued the barrel nut to about 50 pounds. One or both of these measures had the desired effect and the rear sight is now back to a near center position and putting rounds in the black.

      can't beat a free floated barrel. just sayin

    • @TheRealGunsmith
      @TheRealGunsmith  2 місяці тому +1

      BS. It's the high amount of pressure on the barrel by the fore end. It must be floated and the hanger made rigid for accuracy. I've done this, quite successfully, with hundreds of rifles, some of my own, many for happy clients.

    • @TheRealGunsmith
      @TheRealGunsmith  2 місяці тому +1

      Polygonal rifling is no more or less accurate than any other. It is the dimensional uniformity of a barrel, worked up loads, that dictate the accuracy, along with the shooter's capability.

      The gas barrels I had in here, since they were old manufacturing, and 20 of them, a factory error.
      The hunting rifle barrels that I had in that were bent, and not just by a tad, one had been dropped from some height, onto a rock, in a fall; several were rolled on by horse or mule, one was still on the horse, tied by the back of the trailer and the gate was open, horse moved in such a way that the rifle, in the sheath on the saddle, got in between the gate and the trailer and then the horse moved, had quite the bend in it. Straightened it and it shot as good as ever. Still in use.
