Is This $1000 4K Camcorder Still Worth It In 2022/2023?

  • In this video, I talk about my Canon Vixia HF G50 and how I think it could be "cinematic" enough for your next film project or UA-cam video in 2022/2023! Camcorders aren't being talked about enough in the videography community because most people are using DSLR's or mirrorless cameras for their superior specs. I don't think specs are always important and this camera shows that you can still get beautiful, even "cinematic" footage and great features in a Canon Vixia HF G50.

Camcorders are totally underrated. It is sad that dslr/mirrorless hype is ruining markets with bokeh and youtube. When it comes to unlimited recordings, no crops, no overheating, no anykind limitation, no need to change lenses all the time, a battery life and easy to change it, camcorder is a serious video machine. And what comes to low light. You have to spent a lot of money for glass that bigger sensor is better in low light. But it costs then a lot and comes with limitations if not speaking something like A7S3. But then it should be compared to cinema cameras anyway. Glad that some still understand this and many more other benefits of camcorders.

I have the HF G40, HD camcorder. I've made a few videos about it and I still use it from time to time even though I have other cameras including a Panasonic GH5s, which is incredible by the way. I definitely would like a newer camcorder. I was thinking maybe the HF G60, but a G50 might do as well it seems.... Great video though, thanks. Oh, one draw back that keeps me from using these cameras more is the dynamic range. And also the smaller bit rate makes it harder to adjust colours and such. So I just find you really have to make sure you nail it in camera.

Nice little review, Matthew. The XA series were gems, I've used the HF G40 for a few years. Doesn't do 4K, but the quality is superb. Trouble is, Canon have made mistakes with later models like the XA50 (only a 3" screen, and joystick moved to the left!). And they're not as well made as the earlier models. You have a good style of review. Thanks from the UK.

Matt, I agree with your opinion that these compact Canon camcorders are hidden gems among a mirrorless camera dominated landscape. I just upgraded from the XA40 to the new XA60 (3.5” higher res LCD and .36” much higher res EVF). I do mostly aviation video in 1080P/60 and the 627mm zoom range is just the tool I need to capture close up video from a distance! As you said, the lens on these compact Canon camcorders is a hidden gem! For my purposes, it’s a much better tool than a cumbersome, mirrorless “rig” setup. Nice review, you touched on all of the important point. I should mention that the “Low IFR…” video on my channel is the only one recorded with the XA40. I just got the XA60 yesterday, so no videos from it are on my site yet.

I have an XA20, and they're a great value for a prosumer, with 20x zoom (and an available zoom extender), 1080p60, 1080p24, "cinema mode", built-in neutral density filter, multiple types of image stabilization, a manual focus/zoom ring, assignable buttons and knobs, XLR mic inputs, Wi-Fi, and many other nice features. However, the footage looks a little bit soft and over-compressed compared to real pro cameras, especially in low or unusual light situations, and the focus ring (which is fully electronic) has mushy, imprecise response, and I would usually end up using the one-touch autofocus feature instead.

I use both myself depending on what I am filming, over all you can not beat a good camcorder and microphone, I have just started using the HFG60 myself but have had ,Amy, canon over does a better package from my experience. The main advantage over SLR style cameras is the level of control in the zoom, you can zoom in and out smoothly even better still using a Lanc. I do also use a Canon M6 mark 2, for some fixed focus shots and events where it is more suited as the bigger chip can be ad advantage on such cameras, to get good results you are best not zooming while filming as you don’t have as good control as a camcorder and the focus tends to drift for a split second on slr style cameras.

My first camera was a VX2100, started out filming skateboarding with my friends. That got stolen and I got a DVX100B, also DV tape, but now with 24P! Two years later, HDV happened, so I ended up ditching my $2500 DVX pro camcorder for a more home movie oriented camera, but HD (kinda), the Canon HV40.
Honestly, that HV40 might have been my favorite camera of all time, features to cost wise, which is crazy to think about.
Then the DSLR revolution happened, and nobody wanted a camcorder anymore, but I still rocked one as much as I could, especially after I picked up the fantastic Canon XF100. That thing, and some DSLRs made me plenty of money!
I ended up taking a break from video after 2015 for a few years, and when I decided to buy some cameras again in 2018 to do some simple documentary type stuff, I went for a 70D for more controlled stuff, and a Canon G21 for run and gun, instead of the XA10. The G21 is the previous 1080p only version of this G50 camera.
My G21 has shot hundreds of hours of documentary/ENG type video, and made plenty of money. It’s only flaws for me are that it doesn’t have infrared, which I want mostly in case I come across Bigfoot, and it’s not the best in low light. Otherwise, it served me pretty well.
With all that in mind, I would go for the XA40 or XA50, even though I’m frustrated that these l’ew cameras” are all just so-so quality 4K crammed into the same old bodies we had more than a decade ago. I would really want the XF605, though I don’t like the price at all, if I were to buy a 4K canon camcorder again.
A true prosumer camcorder needs to
cost $3500 or less, have good low light, infrared, two XLR inputs, and three lens control rings. That’s doable. And canon could do it by recycling the XF205 body, which is my favorite of them all, but the XF205 just came at the wrong time between the XF100 1080p and the demand for 4K. I’d probably buy a 4K XF205 in a heartbeat if that came out.
It would need 4K60, at least, preferably 4K120, none of this regressive stuff like they did with the XA75, which is now 4K30 only, when the same camera body, the XF400, had 4K60 in it 5 years ago. Nonsense.
All that said, I totally just bought hardcore into the Sony cinema line! Canon pushed me away! 😂
Maybe I need to call Sony and ask them to make my dream camcorder, since Canon just refuses to do it!

Gotta say, I’m with you on this. My HF G70 is the best looking video I’ve ever seen personally. I have one pointer for you. Roll with the 4K. It’s much better than the 1080p mode for like… no reason at all. Also, messing with custom picture profiles is tricky, but doesn’t take long to figure out what’s going on. Colour matrix adjustments are tricky, but try going +15, +15, +10, +15, +10, +15 for a slightly “kodachromy” look, and then adjust the knee slope up by 10, lower the point to 85, it looks pretty neat.

Agree with you 100%. I started as a videographer in the 1990s but switched to most still photography (crazy, I know). It seems like some guru determines the "thing to use" and everyone steps in line. I saw that with digital still cameras. You HAD to have full frame, you HAD to have double card slots, you HAD to go mirrorless, you HAD to have lenses that cost thousands of dollars.. and so on. Naturally, all of that was BS.
The same can be said of the video. Yes, an expensive FF camera with a $3,000 lens is awesome, but a dedicated camcorder gives the user so much benefit too as it is dedicated and designed to shoot video.
A while back I watched a UA-camr talk about his new 8K camera for shooting UA-cam videos! Well, I guess he had money to burn. However, I watch a lot of channels that are very well produced that shoot on an iPhone. The trick is to understand your camera's strengths and limitations and use good technique and an interesting storyline.
The only limitation that I saw with your camcorder was that the lens could have been a bit wider so it probably wouldn't work as a blogging camera. Oh well.
$1000 for a decent camera with tons of features and a pretty fast lens, sounds like a super bargain to me.

📌 Nice video dude and nice shots. You are still a little awkward in front of the camera, but you are doing very well. It's ridiculous that there is so much focus on DSLR when it comes to filming when these cameras are primarily made for stills and quickly get hot while shooting video. We have recently started using the Canon XA70 here, which is fairly comparable in terms of body to the Canon HF G50. The specs are of course higher, but the price is also more than 2 times higher. We look forward to the next videos shot with your Canon HF G50. Very wise to use 24 frames instead of the 60 hype. It does indeed look cinematic with beautiful colors and razor-sharp images. The camcorder should receive much more attention for filming, because the DSLR is still less suitable for this. Our compliments for having the courage to bring this to your attention. Well done.

Help.....Love your channel, nicely done! I have the HFG 60 and love the quality of film it produces, but i get a ton of noise. Zoom motor noise, and all kinds of noise onto my films...especially with low temps, or low light...not coming through my external mic, just the camera transferring it over onto the video. Suggestions??? I film hunting events a lot for people. My old Vixia 40 had no noise transfer?

I own one and it is a great camcorder...the way to go for video; but having to take out the SD card and load it into the computer is a deal breaker, and I wouldn't have bought one if I had realized the poor interface to the computer. Instead I use my Canon EOS R5, of which a person can download the video to the computer via a cable, along with having remote shooting with the lens view showing on the computer screen.

Most camcorders have smaller the 1 inch chip that perform very noisy indoors. Most consumers shoot short length footage and not 1 hour uninterupted footage so the advantage of camcorders does not make sense. At the other side the pros of bigger sensor mirrirless is better low lights, better dynamic range and more creative control by using different lenses. That is the biggist problem of the small then 1"camcorders. Manufactures should not make less the 1" inch sensor camcorders. This prosumers camcorders are only suitable for news report, journalism, education and corporate when streaming live events when you have control of light. Consumers are not buying them any more. Even wedding videographers are moving away to mirrorless cameras such as Panasonic GH line m43, Fuji X-H line, Sony FX-line and Canon R5 (if you can overcome the overheating). It is funny that majority will accept overheating before accepting a less then 1" sensor of a camcorder.

I actually used to have the hf g40. I got it in I think 2017 and used it all the way up to 2021. It’s the exact same camera as the g50 just didn’t shoot in 4k. I bought it to film action sports with and eventually got kind of tired of the look of it. The g50 seems like it has a better image to it I think. I sold mine and ended up buying a canon sl3 since it’s a smaller dslr that canon makes. Easier to take on vacations and camping trips. But I actually have my own channel where I check out old camcorders as well if you feel like checking it out 😊 youtube.com/@brandonalldredge
