  • It was 5:30am in Tapalpa, Jalisco and we realized it was time to seek emergency medical attention.

    Today in our travel Mexico vlog, we are sharing our experience going to our first emergency room in Mexico. At 5:30am Jordan had an encounter with an unexpected visitor in our Tapalpa, Jalisco Airbnb. Since this Pueblo Magico is in the mountains of Jalisco, it's pretty common to come across lots of critters.
    Once we realized that Jordan was stung by a scorpion in Mexico, we applied Frankincense essential oil to slow any reactions to the venom or symptoms he might have. Originally, we weren't going to find a hospital in Tapalpa, but after hearing feedback from our UA-cam community and Facebook following, we decided to be on the safe side and find a Mexican hospital close by.
    Watch our Mexico travel vlog to find out what happened during our first experience at an emergency room as well as the medical costs in Mexico for the hospital visit. If you're considering medical tourism Mexico, you might be surprised to learn what we paid at the hospital. Medical tourism might be more reasonable for healthcare needs than you might think.
    ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
    In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our UA-cam channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

      Since we didn't have any experience with doctors before this, we didn't know what to think about Mexican health care. Now, we have absolute confidence that the doctors are confident and well-trained, despite (maybe) having outdated equipment or being in a small facility. You're probably very right about them being able to do better work because they aren't living in fear of being sued.

      I agree this info is great to have. Some people might shy away from medical treatment in fear of it being too expensive. In more touristic areas expect to pay more but still economical. I saw an ENT in Playa Del Carmen in September and it was around 500 Peso's. Sure quit a bit more than 80 but I was happy to pay, my insurance co-pay in the states for a specialist is more than double that. Now if you are staying at one of those big AI's and the hotel sends you to a private hospital, get your checkbook out.

    Mexico’s public health system 101. 1st level: county clinics (“municipio” means county), these are your first response units. 2nd level: main area hospitals, often in main counties and every state capital. 3rd level: speciality hospitals, where they treat the more serious and specific problems (respiratory, diabetes, cancer, etc.). And then, as doctors use to say, “4th level is God”. 3rd level is quite well equipped and have the most qualified personnel working there. And again, if needed, you’ll find those very inexpensive.
    Not to get overly political, but those are the perks of “socialist” health care. Yes, has many problems, long wait hours here and there, but people getting sick for not having money is VERY uncommon in Mexico.
    Good to know you’re well. Please take note of emergency services everywhere you go.

      I been living in the US for over 20 years, now a US citizen, but I was born in Mexico, when I was a teenager I was involved in a bad car crash, we had Ambulances for me and my friends and we were treated at a municipal (County Public) hospital, X-rays were done, broken leg and wrist, lots of beep cuts, my friends were also with broken bones, after 2 days in the hospital my mother paid a total of $200 pesos something like $19 dollars. yesterday took my son to the dentist and shed $258 Dollars for a tooth extraction. So yeah incomes are very different but Mexico does good in keeping living and medical emergency costs low for everyone.

    Jordan, glad to hear you are doing well after your encounter with the scorpion. Wanted to let you know your cost estimate for a trip to a hospital emergency room in the US was way off. Getting treated for that scorpion sting in a US hospital emergency room would have set you back at least $3,000 USD. You would have been billed by the hospital emergency room, the emergency room doctor, the lab for any tests they had run, and finally the pharmacy for the anti-venom. I'm guessing the total final bill would have been closer to $5,000 USD. Cost of health care / medical insurance is the number one reason we moved and retired in Mexico.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  6 років тому +4

      Dear Troy, please, befriend me! I retired, and can't stand this US sh#t in place of healthcare. I want to move. While still working, went to Ecuador. Yes, extremely cheap, but all the rules with getting visa! For two years after getting it - no more then 3 months outside Ecuador. And, the latest - all foreigners MUST get insurance. And the very good IESS ( public) for pensionados gringos ( all foreigners) will be not $79/month single, $139 for a couple, but 18%of their pension income, that they had to disclose when applying for a pensionado visa. My combined pensions bring $3200, and I don't feel it's anybody's business. My friend, who worked longer, has over $5000, but she doesn't want to be robbed, either. I would pay, with that new law, almost $600, more than any Medicare! While some many gringos, who have just meager SS, will pay 3-6 times less. So stupid. Some worked hiding income from IRS, or did menial jobs. I was a professional, working 2 full-time jobs to provide for my sickly parent. High pension doesn't mean I'm richer than the one with lower pension. My friend moved from her beloved Ecuador to Medellin, fast. And I'm still here, in Maryland, with my expired papers for pensionado visa in Ecuador. Medellin seem to be too big, and I've never been to Colombia. Should I get an investors visa to Ec., or start gathering info about Mexico? Investors visa requires $25K to be placed in the bank CD, with interest you can use (6-8%), never withdraw the principal, or your visa lapses at once. Then - no info you have to disclose about your pension income. For "investors" the change only in a mandatory insurance, can't pay as you go, like before. And it's still is those $70 and $139. But what if that will change so drastically, too?
      Many gringos, Australians, Canadians put their condos, homes, furnished/decorated beautifully not for sale - but as the last nest, with love and joy. They go to Mexico, Thailand, Colombia, in droves. And I lost confidence...
      Please, I so want to hear from you, real people, not the youngsters from the video. Mexico is very big, not like Ecuador ( I could pretty much see all cities, l knew of, live in them a week or so, in a little over one month. I'm 68, in good shape, but I can't even think to ever be able to choose where in Mexico to go. I would rather hear from people, and make a decision to go to a definite place to visit, and to settle, maybe. Whatever happens later, I might move eventually. But I am not a tourist by nature, videos are enough for me. One thing I know - no 90s of heat, can't have it.

    I guess I pass the stone already or something,and the only thing left for them to do is give me was a shot of some kind of painkiller and I went home . All the care I got that day was just a couple question from the doctor and that took less than 5 minutes and the nurse coming45 or so later and he gave me a shot that took about again 3 to 5 minutes but my bill was $974 .

For example, in Guadalajara you can find the 1-2 top neurologist and cardiologist docs in the world, sometimes either won't charge you a peso or their regular fees, if they notice you dont have money. That is why thousands of americans come to México for different treatments. Good thing you got better.

    In Mexican constitution, medical treatment must be public and free. That's the reason for "municipal Hospital" free of charge attention. A little payment some times could be ask for, but it's because of lack of enough medical supplies. Many doctors in small public clinics, are recently graduated from university and they must work for free for a year period, because it's required to obtain a full license to work as a doctor. This law exists since the 80's and was established because many received free education and are supposed to be giving back to the country a retribution for a free education...(not all the cases).

    Yes, the medical service was public. Strictly speaking, "municipal" means owned/controlled by the "municipio", which is kinda like a county in the US (or parish or commonwealth, depending on the state). Basically, Mexico (the country) is divided in "estados" (states), and each state is divided into "municipios". Within each of those there are towns and cities, and bigger cities are divided in "colonias".
    Glad you guys are ok! be careful when you stay in rural (or rural-adjacent) places, especially in the more tropical/desert climates, always check your beds and try to keep a gap between them and the walls.

  • @gilbertotoledo1421
    @gilbertotoledo1421 6 років тому +72

    Yes there are various levels, the first tier of Healthcare services are what are known as Servicios Médicos Municipales which is probably what you found. These mostly serve rural areas as primary care clinics where people get regular checkups and get patients ready for transfer to a more well equipped hospital in the larger cities when needed (that's what the ambulances are for). Next up are the IMSS (Mexican Institute of Social Security) clinics known as UMF (family medical unit) these function a lot like the municipal clinics only these serve neighborhoods within cities rather than rural villages. They also have an ER as well. Next are the large IMSS regional hospitals.
    Public health care in Mexico is pretty good. The only problem is the wait times. IMSS is unfortunately severely underfunded and understaffed and because they are free to all Mexican citizens they are usually always packed with people. They were originally only for Mexican workers and their families specifically, but populist politicians expanded service to everyone without increasing the funding. So that didn't help either.
    As for private health care. The bottom rung are the pharmacies. Pharmacies usually have a doctor's office where you can go have a doctor evaluate you and provide you with a prescription for medicine you may need.
    Next are the various private clinics that can provide you with better service than a pharmacy does but these are more expensive and only provide basic health care. Finally there are the private hospitals that are almost always top notch and equipped with the best equipment and doctors that money can buy. In every Mexican city there's almost always at least one of these somewhere, if not several. Of course these can cost you a pretty penny. In Guadalajara some of these are Hospital México-Americano, Hospital Puerta de Hierro, Hospital San Javier, just to name a few.
    Then there are also hospitals run by non profit organization like the red cross (which you're already familiar with in Chapala, the green cross, some run by the catholic church, etc. These are also sometimes crowded but nowhere near as much as the IMSS hospitals.

    • @anileda1116
      @anileda1116 6 років тому +7

      Adding to that there are also private clinics build by doctors. Usually there are private medical centers in bigger cities where you can find a group of doctors that have joined together and build their own practice providing a variety of specialties so you can have everything checked up in one place. Each doctor at the clinic will have a relationship with a particular private or public hospital if they need to take you there and usually ask you where do you like to be in case of surgery or emergency. Also, just and FYI in bigger cities most of the private doctors usually work in public hospitals as well, so the level of quality of service provided by the doctor is the same, the main difference is the equipment, waiting time like Gilberto mentioned before and the appearance of the building you are in. As an example, I had to have surgery and my private dr. said I work usually at the public hospital because I like it there for x, y and z but if you want a private recovery room and less waiting time I could do the surgery at the private hospital. I did it at the public hospital and the results were the same, I usually preferred them do to cost. ps. Most of my family are drs. They work wherever the patients need them, do mornings at the public hospitals, afternoons private hospitals and nights private consults.

    Well just as a disclaimer. You probably got a really cheap price because it was a rural hospital ran by IMSS OR SALUBRIDAD in Mexico. They provide free health care and if you are not a beneficiary them you pay a really low price. A private hospital would be much more at least 500 pesos. BTW I know because I'm a doctor. :)

      Just be careful, healthcare over here can be either really good or terrible, my advice, look for IMSS or SSA logos so you know it's a public service hospital, especially SSA, it may have been a Centro de Salud (which is a small clinic equipped to deal with minor emergencies), if this happens again, ask if there's antivenom first, not all health centers are fully stocked all the time and you could waste precious time there

I remember his office was quite humble but I just got a really nice feeling about this caring man. He charges 100 pesos ( less than $5 USA dollars!) per consultation and he was spot on with medication and treatment. ( medicine cost is separate) I live in Asia with access to the best private healthcare and I have also lived in the UK and experienced USA healthcare. Never had such a good doctor. Grad your okay Jordan.. people (mostly from here in the USA) have this misconceptions about Mexico’s medical system and think the worst, like you won’t find good qualified doctors and nothing could be further from the truth. Mexico has very capable doctors and it also has some of the best doctors in the world. Doctors and staff are there to help and help they do. Here in the USA it’s more about getting the most money out of you. For instance earlier this year my grandpa got really sick so my mom and aunt decided to take him to Morelia to a mayor hospital which is an hour and a half from the rancho he lives in, they called for an ambulance 🚑 (from the nearest town which is like 10 away) to take him to Morelia.. that whole trip with a nurse checking him and with all the amenities from the ambulance and the long 1 1/2hr drive only cost about $75 US dollars!! Here in California if the ambulance picks you up it’s automatically at least $7,000 dollars!! That’s just here within town! Oh and just cuz you don’t see fancy machinery or gadgets in these small clinics or small hospitals in Mexico don’t think you’re gonna get cut rate service.. just cuz the stuff isn’t state of the art and it looks like it’s from the 90s doesn’t mean your gonna get bad service or less qualified treatment after all all these machines do the same thing be it from the 90s or state of the art. Like others have said it the quality of the people and the attention they treatment they give you that counts and makes a difference. One thing is for sure in Mexico doctors aren’t there to rip you off.. people are sue happy here in the USA too unfortunately and that’s one reason doctors charge so much but with that being said it’s still outta control.

I'm Mexican and I've been to hundres of hospitals in Mexico and some abroad and yes the cost of healthcare in the U.S. is impossibly ridiculous. I've spent more on clothes and other trivialities than in all of my medical procedures and surgeries convined. Anyway great story, great vids. Keep em coming. Best of luck to you guys.

    Other tipes of public hospitals you find in bigger cities like guadalajara is
    Hospital civil that’s one of the big ones and they also have a bunch of Red Cross emergency rooms or green cross emergency rooms that are public
    If you guys have insurance a lot of the private hospitals receive your insurance
    Kaiser or blue cross it’s a process but they do accept insurance from USA

    Glad Jordan is OK. For future reference, a sting or bite is going to introduce poison of some kind into your system. Remaining calm and keeping the site below the heart is a good way to slow the spread of the poison. So, in retrospect, running around after the scorpion raising your heart and respiratory rate might not have been the best thing to do. Anyway, thanks for the video, good information.

    In Mexico there is this type of medical units, usually in communities that do not have access to hospitals, the patient is stabilized with basic management and if it is controllable in the unit the patient is discharged to home, if the patient is not stabilized or is a emergengy the patient is transferred to the next level of attention to the nearest hospital, this units belong to the public health system, where in the majority they are attend by doctors who are performing social service, which is the last step of the career as a general practitioner.

    Man I'm really so happy that you are ok. Thanks for sharing you experience. In this situations, It's very important don't listen to the advice of people who are not a Doctor and go straight to the hospital. Let me tell you what happened In my Town (Morelos) a few months ago a man was stung by a scorpion on your head and he died because he didn't go to the hospital and just did what the neighbors told him to do: to eat the Scorpion, to drink coca cola with eggs, to suck the Venom by someone else.

    • @TangerineTravels

      We're giving this comment a heart, not because of the terribly sad story about your neighbor's death, but because this information needs to be known. Sometimes, strange home remedies can be effective, but Mexico is extremely diverse-down to the scorpions-and in this case, it might be best to get a professional opinion to be safe.

    Here in Mexico we sometimes blame our government because the public health care is not perfect mostly due to waiting times in big cities but once I went to the US to visit a friend and someone from his family had an emergency and needed a short ambulance ride, the bill ended up to be in the thousands just for the ride and some more thousands for what they did in the clinic I was so surprised because it was soooo expensive I really think you guys in the US are getting ripped off with the medical care
    Question, what happens if someone has an emergency in the states and doesn't have the money to get treated?

    • @jimbig3997
      @jimbig3997 6 років тому +3

      You sign something that is basically an agreement to pay (but you are given no idea how much it will cost). Then you are treated (they are NOT allowed to refuse treatment), and then released without having to pay a dime, but you are billed and hounded the rest of your life. You go into a US hospital these days and you mostly see ghetto-rats, and how are they paying for that? They aren't. It's just one big mess with insurance companies, lawsuits, and doctors are not able to freely make the medical decisions. Actually you should be given some say in your medical decisions but you are not treated as a customer, more like as cattle. That way they still get paid if you die.

      @@lpabeck RN here. Your opinion is NOT true at all. There's this thing called EMTALA, a federal law. No Emergency Department can turn you away before assessing you because of lack of finances or insurance coverage. We're not even allowed to ask that during triage or when you are brought to a room. That said, though, an Emergency Department's only obligation is to stabilize you in a true EMERGENCY (read, life-threatening) circumstance, or transfer you to another facility if you need a higher level of care (say, specialists not available at that facility). They will admit you if needed for inpatient treatment; finances are always secondary. EDs nationally do way more than that, though, since they have become primary points of care for so many people lacking basic finances, insurance coverage or even a primary physician. I know; I've been working in ED for over 15 years. I respectfully suggest you take your ignorant comment down.

    I had to go to a hospital in Cancun just this past October. I tripped down 2 small steps and twisted my ankle and foot, it was so painful that I went to Hospiten. The place did seem outdated and there was a slight Language barrier but I had the most compassionate care there. Unfortunately, my debit card didnt go through so I couldn't get xrays, but I was given a pain pill and my foot was wrapped in an ace bandage. No charge. When I returned home I went to urgent care and found out it was a bad sprain, no breaks. I cant say anything but good things about my care there.
