That perch was killed by an otter. I used to own a fishery and lost several big carp, with similar injuries, caused by otters. Otters are on every waterway in England now.
Here in Canada otters are super common, they can literally clean out a fishing hole. We have mink as well, cute little animals. I have a photo of a mink smelling my feet because there was fish slime on my shoes. Then it went over to my net and grabbed it with its teeth and pulled. The net fell on top of him and it was trapped for a few seconds. So funny.
@@CW-wm7up I owned and developed Ashmead Fishery in Somerset for 20 years, where the first 50 lbs carp in the south west was caught. After that I sold to a friend Mark Walsingham, who sold it to the Carp Society about a year ago. I caught a lot of mink in the early days, but otters took over in later years and the seventeen acres had to be fenced to prevent fish been killed by them.
Can never get over just how ferocious little jack pike are lol...They seem to enjoy eating things bigger than them lol...Nature is a truly unique thing... I'd say mink that nibbled that perch.
I felt that! Losing your lure to the trees is the worst, but it could probably be worse, if you are fishing and you catch nothing, feels no bites and there are no fish active that must be worse, but if you catch nothing at least you've had the day outside at the water. I find every little water hole, stream lake or sea doesn't matter water is amazing and the fish in them even more amazing.
Cheers from Canada! I am actually eating some perch for lunch right now while watching this. Our perch dont quite get as big as the European variety but they taste great!
That perch 😍 I'm still a few ounces short of my dream 3... I'd say most likely a mink. they'll have been breeding/mating and anything partially eaten is usually the sign of a meal being interrupted by another mink, one not looking for food.
A great session with those pike, in all my 75 years of fishing I've never seen so many pike caught in such a short time. I can't get used to plugs being called crank baits, when did their name change? Also a nice bonus perch.
Beautiful fish mate ,really nice to see someone , you know, actually weigh it too :) That dead fish with the gills eaten....Otter for sure! Seen them do that exact same thing numerous times with numerous fish species....eat the gills and head and leave the whole rest of the fish. Great vid.
When you’re fishing for perch what trace do you use? If it’s fluorocarbon what diameter do you use? I tend to use wire just incase I hook any pike and I’m sure I’m deterring the perch because of this.
Nicely done Chris! Cracking Perch, we have a few that size in a local river near me in West London, would be happy to put you on them if you are ever down in 'the smoke'
That dead perch very likely got hit by a heron, but had just enough strength and weight to get away, sans it's gills. I've watched the herons at the end of my garden do something very similar. With small fish they'll spear any part of the body, but with larger specimens they nearly always go for the head area.
No way a heron would nibble a fish's gills. Whatever it was it was a mammal. That's shows the fish are in plentiful supply. (Good!). The predator can nibble the juice y bits and not all the risky boney bits which they would do if food were short. Imagine being at an all you can eat buffet. You don't bother with the messy tricky boney bits do you?
@@jimballantine4408 What on Earth are you rambling on about? Nobody said anything about nibbling. I've personally seen exactly what herons can do, on a very regular basis, given I have two resident at the bottom of my garden and watch them every day. This isn't definitive proof, just very high probability. And saying "whatever it was it was a mammal" is a contradiction in terms.
Hi mate long time watcher of your vids. Ive recently found a little urban canal rhat is very shallow, mostly less than 1m deep. It has very few pike but i can see them cruising sometimes. Ive had a few follows but the fish are very spooky. I know you really specialise in this kind of fishing, how do you sightcast pike without spooking them and what lures do you recommend?
"Run Forrest" 😂, I would love to feel some rain. April 4th and we are still buried in snow, another 25cm of snow falling the next 2 days. So depressing! (In Canada by the way)
G'day Chris , absolute awesome Pike and Perch welldone mate . Good Olde uk weather , you should buy a pack a mac and keep it in your back pack. Great session again, all the best form down under mate. 👍🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You're such a positive and versatile when it comes to your fishing techniques. I'm just wondering: do you ever take fish for food or are you just catch and release? Greetings from Finland! Is there any waters that holds zander?
Hi Chris beautiful perch fella. Can I ask a question about glasses. What do you use and then the lense colour. What’s the difference between dark or yellow I’m guessing weather ? Thanks and keep the vids coming 👍🏻
Aren't there any laws against targeting pike while in spawn? In Denmark where im from, its illegal to target them from april 16th until may 1st every year.
You carnt beat a big perch though theres something kinda special about them i think propper old warriors they just look the part great content as always laddy 👍🏻

Definitely not an otter buddy. I'm 90% sure it was a mink
I remember in the 60,s. In Scotland, there were thousands escaped from the mink fur farms.

Can never get over just how ferocious little jack pike are lol...They seem to enjoy eating things bigger than them lol...Nature is a truly unique thing...
I'd say mink that nibbled that perch.

My red letter pike day was in side ways rain and strong winds,, they love it
Otter Chris. Same problem in my area. They’re everywhere now and love to feast on the gills
Amazing Perch to end the season with Chris.
Thanks for that! What a monster Perch

What should be stronger, trace or mainline? Just new to pike fishing.
Its got to be a otter mate, thats one hell of a big perch well done.
What a way to end the season, better than my day today with yet another blank for carp
Nicely done Chris! Cracking Perch, we have a few that size in a local river near me in West London, would be happy to put you on them if you are ever down in 'the smoke'
Does the canals not have a closed season? Thought all water ways shut for spawning until June 15th?

In the US otter do that. I would have never thought of heron, but that makes sense.

What a nice session you had well done.
What a huge perch nice one 😂
I’m from Canada huge fan we have jumbo yellow perch what type of is that in your video
What a fish! 😮 I reckon it was a mink that had that perch. Cracking video as always.
That's the biggest perch i have seen out of a british canal. Good job mate
"Run Forrest" 😂, I would love to feel some rain. April 4th and we are still buried in snow, another 25cm of snow falling the next 2 days. So depressing! (In Canada by the way)
What set up is that cause I’m after a perch set up hit 20+ pike but don’t really fish for perch but they look fun
Do you not rest pike when releasing to the canal? Or is that done in your net off camera? (The bigger ones like the second)
It's kinda pike day! 😅🤘 Great job on managing that 3lb perch Chris! 💥✊
Great catch, hope I copy that tomorrow. Perch fishing

Gravid female?
I recently bought a spinning rod 20-50g , does that mean I can only use lures that are maximum 50grams in weight? Not to sure about this

Some nice pike Chris but that perch was something special. Nice one 👍 . I Think that was a mink that had that perch ☹️
You're such a positive and versatile when it comes to your fishing techniques. I'm just wondering: do you ever take fish for food or are you just catch and release? Greetings from Finland! Is there any waters that holds zander?
That was a beast!
Good stuff Chris. what a butey of a perch 🐟

Hi Chris beautiful perch fella. Can I ask a question about glasses. What do you use and then the lense colour. What’s the difference between dark or yellow I’m guessing weather ? Thanks and keep the vids coming 👍🏻
Chris what go pro do you use mate for the first person view?
Which bullet jerk..? 10cm or 13cm..?
Awesome buddy .. amazing fish session…
Great days fishing 🎣 👍
That perch looks like otter, but since you don’t have them there I’d go with the mink.
really nice fish love the content from you. I also want to be like catching bigger perch what know do u use for fluro leader to swivel or bait?
nice content subscribed after watching lure vs bait challenge with fish with carl
what a beautifull fishing day . Well done.
Are you allowed to fish the canals in the off season?
Yes, they count as still water.
Depends on the authority. Some canal stretches still have a closed season, but you can fish most of them.
Aren't there any laws against targeting pike while in spawn? In Denmark where im from, its illegal to target them from april 16th until may 1st every year.
You carnt beat a big perch though theres something kinda special about them i think propper old warriors they just look the part great content as always laddy 👍🏻
