Can The International Space Station Make It Until 2030?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Since 2000, the International Space Station has been continuously inhabited, orbiting Earth as a symbol of international collaboration and human innovation. But after 25 years in space, the ISS is showing its age with leaks, outdated hardware, and operational challenges. From Zvezda’s pressure loss to spacewalk delays and cutting-edge IROSA solar arrays, we explore how the ISS is being maintained and upgraded to ensure it can last until its planned deorbit in 2030. Can the station hold on for another five years? Let’s dive into the details.

The first module of the space station was launched a couple weeks after I was born and I can barely hold myself together down here.
Heh, heh. Just wait 'til you get old. I promise it doesn't get easier! 🙂

That was a great rundown on a lot of different things. I had forgotten about the stations loss of attitude control in 21
2:12 I am indeed asking about the Pizza Hut logo
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone
That was an excellent recap of so many topics. I’d almost forgotten about the station’s loss of attitude control back in ’21!
Add up all the issues
1. Pee processing failure (requiring extra storage); started as a 1-2 severity, ended as a 4 requiring special parts be shipped ASAP
2. O2 leaks; 5 out of 5 severity and impact
3. Micrometeorids and space junk avoidance; severity at least 4; with Cargo Dragon now capable of reboost, helps reduce severity overall.
4. EVA suit failures; probably also a 4/5 severity requiring parts get shipped ASAP, and 2 incidents being near fatal.
5. Power production, 5 out of 5 severity, but solved with new rollout panels. Problem is though, no more EVA's possible (potentially) until suit issues solved.
Add these all up and you've got a BOAT LOAD of problems.
The liquid waste recycling unit is the source of the famous quote: "Yesterday's coffee is tomorrow's coffee."
Go back even further. To 1973. When Skylab (modified 3rd stage of a Saturn V) went up. 17m diameter. It was to be the nucleus of a future space station. But orbital drag wasn't anticipated. By the time that shuttles were operational, Skylab had fallen. (It would have been much, much easier to expand and construct a space station if the Skllab nucleus had been still up there.)
Thanks for a great sum up. Ryan, you really are a fantastic host for these videos.
The spinning was clearly tied to a Lucasfilm Phantom Menace marketing campaign.
Hey, it was a good trick.
Ryan and NSF, y'all rock! Peace
An enthusiastic, informative and knowledgeable video. Thanks.
Most excellent thanks!
Brilliant vid
Worth information.
I actually do think I need to ask about the Pizza Hut logo on that Russian launch.
From what I remember from briefs reports; Roscosmos needed cash. And pizza hut wanted noteworthy advertising space.
@@montanac8213 heh, advertising "space" xD
It's the Russian part that is breaking down. Their Zarya module that is attached to Unity need to be disconnected, and deorbited. Then, their new Nauka and Prichal modules can be connected to unity. This will allow Russia to replace their old Zvezda habitation/propulsion module and their soyuz docking modules. The U.S. side is still in good condition.
Also, the axiom modules can still be attached to the ISS as planned.
not really, sure the last issues were on russian side, but there are leaks and issues all over the station add to it failing EVA suits, limited options for resupply. Its no wonder ISS is up there almost 30 years, going trough thermal cycle every 90min, constantly being hit by micrometeoroids and baked in UV. I'm sure agencies will keep it operational to 2030, most likely it would be able to stay up there way longer than that (given how conservative NASA is), but ISS is old and should be replaced with a modern station.
Attaching a Starship will solve many things: volume, safety by being new, and last resort escape capability of additionally landing on water (aside from tower catch) with gentle tip over mechanisms, add-on inflatable pontoons, and procedures.
Its all a learning process, we learn from the things that go wrong as well as the things that go right. Hoppefully there'll be a V2 going up, in time
Merry Christmas NSF, Thank you for all that you do!
Whew! Good update!
I think the 2021 LOAC was less an issue with the age of the ISS and more an issue with the Nauka module's control system.
Still a very scary moment and a reminder of what could happen if critical systems on the ISS fail, and a failure of Russian modules and their attitude control becomes more and more likely as the station ages
It'd be cool to put it in to a high orbit and store it there unpressurized.
Then eventually set it down on the moon as a future historical site. (I have no idea of the physics involved, if it'd even be possible.)
But I'm guessing the money involved for either would be difficult to come by.
I think all of us can understand great infrastructure being built to then not be maintained fully until it starts to fail completely.
Road, Power and water networks of various countries.
I really want to see it boosted into a geostationary graveyard orbit, but I understand why that's not reasonable.
When the time comes I’ll certainly miss being able to watch it silently traverse the night sky.
The Tian Gong looks almost the same.
Excellent
Thanks.
And did you know Rocketlab aquired SolAero, solar panel maker?
Idk why I find the pee storage problem so funny but I really do
That’s never been the biggest hang up, actually. Biggest hangup in human spaceflight was when had problem disposing of all the, er, solid human waste; basically, a ‘constipated station’ problem, is how we referred to it in Mission Control in Houston. - Dave Huntsman
5:32 a fault in the communications antenna? Who pointed this out, was it someone called HAL? There's no way I would take a space walk to fix a communications antenna. ..... ever! 😂😂😂
No one asked you to, or ever will.
Given that Tesla Optimus robots work well when teleoperated, I suggest using them for spacewalks.
That's great idea
No part is the best part. No need for a suit.
In fact, while ISS is still around, SpaceX should propose that as a joint Technology Demonstration Project with NASA; i.e a joint human/remote controlled Optimus EVA. - Dave Huntsman
Good idea. I also think it is likely that Optimus teleoperated will be on initial mars ships in 2 to 4 years.
@@chrisolix3441 I think for that they will need an AI, since it'd be hard to operate them with a 20 minute ping😂
2:54 that crash tackle looked a bit unsafe what was the deal? Emergency or skylarking..?
Since space things always get delayed I fully expect ISS to not deorbit in 2030.
Good evening all
Imagine their view
In the intro, those are all Russian segment problems, a little age with spacesuits on ISS side other than that I can’t think of anything going wrong over there.
With smaller electronic devices, I wonder if they could have small satellites on the space station that could intercept space junk and assist the pieces to deorbit. Have a Pez dispenser that could eject them.
Small satellites have been ejected from ISS; but that essentially fixes them in the same plane as the ISS’ orbit- which is NOT the same plane as most other satellites - and hence debris- is actually flying in. - Dave Huntsman
That space junk is likely to be going 1000s mph relative to the station. Intercepting the junk with a small craft would likely be more of an explosion creating even more dangerous junk.
@but most of the junk has been launched west to east over the years. I’m just thinking big items on that same route. Other satellites with these small cube sats could be launched on other launch headings.
I hope it can or that a replacement is in place before it fails.
Nasal should be using the existing ISS to assist in building a new space station. Start launching the modules for the new station and dock them to the ISS. That way you can use the old space station and it's systems like power, waste and water recycling to help support the new station while it's components are launched and constructed. Then at an appropriate time you can decouple the new station and deorbit the old one.
Exactly! It is logical that you use the current one while the new one is being built, then transfer operations from the current one to the new one.
It's a bit like the town where I grew up, in the 1800s, the original lighthouse was starting to have structural issues it wasn't dangerous, but it would have gotten worse, so they built a new lighthouse and kept the old one operational until the new one was ready then one night they lit the old one for the last time. The next night, the new one was lit for first time. They still use the "new" one to this day. The same goes for the hospital. It only makes sense. I know the ISS is a bit different to a lighthouse or a hospital, but the basic concept of not shutting down the old one until the new one is ready is still the same.
Edit: So, for some reason despite hitting reply to the person I was replying to UA-cam didn't add the user name so I'll just put it here.
@mikepatton8691
Can't it be pushed to a stable orbit ( lagrange point ) ?
A bit of flex tape and she'll be right. 😂
Hey. Would it not be easyer istead of destroying the ISS , to move it to Mars orbit., use it there, or moon?
All I want is a starship to rascue stations modules instead of letting them burn
So , where’s the show ?
No happening because of Christmas. They get a week off
At 12:40
The Gentleman has an uncanny resemblance to a "Thunderbirds" TV show, marionette character! 👍
What an Appropriate place for him to be! 😁
Thunderbirds are GO! 😁🥰
Mike in San Diego. 🌞🎸🚀🖖
bravoo
An even more important question, is will Butch and Suni, be back on earth before they deorbit 😂
Remember, you’re not stuck up there 🎉
Keeping Boeing products off the ISS, such as the Starliner, goes 90% of the way to keeping everyone safe. It’s fine.
This looks like it's about to give birth to Rover.
🚀
Start replacing the defective modules with Newer ones. Sell the one one . I am sure they could get a lot of money for it.
Somebody give that man a burger 🍔
It will last to 2030 because it Has to. No one will have anything close to ISS size with all its instruments Except The Chinese until 2035.
Tell us about the pizza hut logo
I'm going to ask about the pizza hut logo... what's up with that?
we are watching and doubtful about the durability with luck it can survive
The problem with both the ISS or even spaceflight in general ( at least from the US ) is that the demands are there, the budget is not... 5:31 this is part of the problem, the spacesuits Nasa has available are all older than the ISS itself and even after Artemis was announced there was never remotely the kind of budget needed to maintain, upgrade or replace what they already have. The only reason SLS has gotta such consistent and massive fundind is because the people in charge of that commitee in Congress benefit from all that cash poured into their states; they don't give a shit about spaceflight.
I feel like Vast is our best future space station wise. They have realistic plans but grand ambitions, and I think they'll become the leader of the pack.
It’s not the only space station up there. China has one also.
Yep, and we all know how reliable a Temu Space Station will be. It'll be another Tofu Dreg project
Clearly, we need to move ISS to Jupiter's orbit to prepare it for Valerian.
At 3.44 "...Part that converts Crew's Number One into Drinking Water..."
That's being unusually circumspect for a Brit, Ryan.
Why not just call it Pee and have done with it?
Mission Accomplished!!! An effective fear and doubt campaign BUT way out of character for NSF. I hope Starship goes off before 1/11 so NSF won't have to resort to click bait to sustain / increase viewership.
I wish SpaceX took advertisers like that. Then we could identify the boosters by such. "Look! It's the Taco Bell booster!"
Can't ISS tarsported back to Earth instead of burnt in the atmosphere?
It will make it to 2030 fine. Something that big with so many parts makes it likely that things will go wrong. That was known from the beginning.
I don't get it. Should change the name to American And Alliance only space station since 'who and who' can access the Space Station.
I really like the ISS.. but I think it’s time for it to go.
Nope, not yet; it’s currently in its most productive mode and is being over 100% utilized. - Dave Huntsman
Sure hope it can as we can't afford a replacement.
Unexpected hazard in space. Drowning.
I don't know. I saw an interesting video with an astronaut saying that maybe we should lift it into higher orbit and use it as a stopping port going to the mion and further. Just as long as we don't get another Skylab crashing backto earth. Considering the size difference of the two.
Esperance Shire Council in Western Australia still has an outstanding fine due from NASA for littering with Skylab parts.
@rais1953 Exactly my point
I wonder how much time is spent dealing with bs vs actual science
happy Christmas 🌲 Day sir❤
is that veritasium music?
About what you said at the end, I'd like to think of AI to only threaten mediocrity. There is no reason for someone competent in their field of interest to be afraid of AI taking over their jobs...
Are we trying to find out who has trypophobia with that pre launch video? 🤣
who has holes?
I'm still incredibly saddened they're just going to crash this thing. With Starship in rapid development, there's no reason why the station cant be brought back piece by piece and reassembled back here where it came from.
The world is more divided than ever and the ISS is one of the last remaining icons of global unity. No borders up there. No wars. Just people working for humanity.
If the sheer importance isn't enough to make us bring it home, maybe maybe dangle a carrot for Elon, could cash in on it and in exchange for bringing it back and preserving it, he gets teh rights to the ISS museum. Imagine being able to walk around and in that thing back here on Earth. People would flock from all over the world and the project would pay for itself and then some.
Letting this crash and burn is a reflection on the horrible species we've become. We could be banding together to overcome and preserve but instead it's full na-screw-it-this-is-cheaper mode. The achievement would be greater accomplishment than building the ISS itself and the perfect way of finishing the greatest space program we've ever performed.
It's simple. Stop defunding NASA. Double or triple or budget and you'll get rid of a lot of these problems.
That's going out of your pocket, buddy
@digestiveissue7710 Yeah. I know. Even with doubling or tripling it's budget, it would still be an incredibly small portion of our national budget. The current NASA budget is pitiful compared to what it used to be and a ton of technology you benefit from came from NASA.
Can space x starship with stage 3 is a space station and growing a normal size a tree?
1:07 Reagan PR. of the USA in 1994 how???
1984
Why would you post a video like this while butch and suni are stuck on the iss. Nothing like worrying families over Christmas 🎄 period when they was only ment to be up there for 8 days now not coming home until early 2025. Crazy.😢
When is it leaving Jupiter's orbit. I am glad HAL is helping us. It is sad the Clooney suit ripped and he lost his life outside the shuttle cargo bay. But the other astonauts couldnt bring him inside because of the alien on his facemask. Sandra bullock appeared in my kitchen but she was wrinkled and weirdly bald. She said they astronauts left on the ISS discovered an obilisk on the moon but it was growing ib size and humans werec not allowed to return to it.
If you are a hoarder you could live up there😂
!shuttle
Premier
Couldn't they eventually land the space station on the moon? That way we could have a start in materials and building structures on the moon?🤔
Cut off Sevesta Star. Replace it with a brand new propulsion and radio module. Keep going for another century.

Next time buy one made in China😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
The Empire or The Republic, the choice is still yours...
It seems that NSF has made its choice...
Keep George Clooney of of it and you'll be OK.
😮
Yall still think their in the sky or in the waters? Because in the sky they can't get water in their helmets that only happens if you're under water
First!
Will NASA make it to 2030? SpaceX may replace NASA by then. Merry Christmas to all. Shalom
Doubtful, NASA does a lot more than just Artemis and the ISS. They are the reason space x even exists in a lot of ways and the reason the aerospace industry is where it is today
Send it more deep in space because there's lot of space. And let it there. May one day can be a piece of a museum on the moon or mars. Why destroy things that mark an era of discovery.??? It should be respected.
