      @@rsteeb depends on what it is. If I'm cleaning or cooking or doing home Brew stuff I'll put NSF in my earbuds, but if they're actually covering a launch I remain seated for the majority of the show.

    I was in gradual school In physics during the SDI era, and some of the stuff developed was, frankly, crazy. My favorite was underground testing of fission-pumped x-ray laser beams. Yes, lasers powered by A-bombs. Crazy stuff.

      @michaelcox1071 Edward Teller always had the best ideas. The fifties and sixties were heady times for pure scientific advancement which was intended for engineering implementation. Now "physicists" seem content with navel gazing.

      They do that occasionally. It was a high orbit with a heavy payload. A booster without landing legs, grid fins or actuators, using all its fuel for launch, could get it there. Still way cheaper than any other expendable launcher, even cheaper than a Falcon Heavy recovering all boosters. And this booster on its 20-somethingth launch has more than paid for itself already.

    there is no "deep space" on this side of the Oort cloud, and even beyond that isn't deep space, it's literal local stellar medium

      @Jack-B-Human Oh dear.... your "hot-take" is grotesquely irrational. I wonder if you even understand who is actually launching all these missions? ULA does not even have Atlas V anymore. In fact ULA (old space) is so incapable of effective operations it is on the chopping block for sale. The Bennu mission is a great accomplishment but your illusionary complaints about the future are whimsical at best. *SOMEONE* recently launched actual civilian missions to space to test new spacesuits and travelled further from Earth than any "official" space agencies have in about fifty years. Deep space missions and science is being done right under your nose.

    I keep picturing a doubly-helixal DNA and don't understand how it's 'left-handed', when I imagine the the molecule from the end, it looks 'right-handed'.
    What am I getting wrong? I would really like to see part of an episode in the future that visually shows how this works.

      The amino acids terrestrial organisms use to make proteins have L chirality. The nucleic acids and sugars used have R chirality as does the most common phase for the double helix of DNA composed of them.

      @@WetterFlug I consider your use of "Exactly" to be somewhat obtuse. Organics are known to self-assemble and mutate without outside intervention aside from environmental energy and chemical availability, whereas your initial precept isn't "exactly" known for that - mechatronics do not build themselves without outside, advanced intervention. As to consciousness - given how few people actually make use of it, I'd suggest it's a cosmic thrift-store find (or at least, that's how most value it).

      Only timepass kind of missions are done in collaboration, not the prestige projects

      ​@@phlogistanjones2722and rightly so ! Collaboration is done on honest terms without backbiting, which Uncle Sam cannot offer ⚠️ so no big collaborations needed from Uncle ✋️
      Look at Japan instead, fantastic collaboration India is making the moon lander and Japan is making the rover for Lupex mission, no strings attached, no backbiting
      Uncle Sam is good only for timepass kind of missions in Low earth orbit, for bigger missions you do it yourself or find a more reliable partner

      for example Uncle Sam who has a history of killing scientists from ISRO, DRDO and BARC
      It took a while to remove the crooks left behind by British from power and bring a more nationalist government in India to stop this nonsense of CIA, still this one is far from perfect and needs to do more hardwork like the Chinese government for India to remain in the space race, this one also has the bad habit of lying down in front of Uncle from time to time
      So Indians chose Japan for collaboration in lunar exploration, much better and honest collaboration than Uncle Sam
      India builds the lander and Japan builds the rover, no strings attached, no backbiting

    That US Space Farce satellite system is pointless... it would take just a single nuke to destroy the entire orbital infrastructure, instantly leveling the playing field and very cost effective too.

      They're built radiation-hardened, with redundant back-up systems. The Russians and Chinese are already working on these systems. I'd rather we not come in 3rd-best on this. The consequences are unthinkable.

    Certain people are so desperate to find life outside Earth, they spent hundreds of billions since the 70s on that one task. They could’ve spent it on better things in space.
    Building blocks for life? Well, wouldn’t you think life would have to based on certain chemical compounds, rather then on nothing? And these certain chemical compounds, along with all other chemical compounds found on Earth, would be found everywhere in the Universe. You can draw your own conclusions.
