This is the first time ive ever seen anyone explain that on a pump

I've always close around 12,000 .I never read any vacuum pump manual except for instructions on changing the oil.
I think I'm going to invest in the newer fieldpiece vacuum pump???
    Thanks again for the videos.

Yes I need to do a correction, should be closed at 10-15k microns.
If I was to buy a new pump, I think I would go feildpice. I really like the design. I think it's a good choice.

I read up on this idea. Most of what I found was confusing, but the gist is by letting in a little atmospheric air, there's a check valve, the partial pressure of the gases in the pump, one being the water vapor, is reduced to below where the water will condense permitting the vapor to go out with the rest of the air. This reduces the capacity of the vacuum pump so the gas ballast is closed to get a deeper vacuum at the accepted cost of water droplets forming and mixing in the oil.
Quite a slick innovation using the gas laws. And logically makes senses as you reduce the pressure to evaporate the water out of the system, it naturally flows that increasing the pressure on the gas in the pump would cause that water to condense again. Unfortunately, inside the pump but the gas ballast is a slick way to get the majority out as vapor.
I am humbled to see how these earlier innovators made temperature, pressure, volume, as well as, evaporation and condensation points their playthings.

It's amazing how so many things work together!

Using the gas ballast also extends the life of the oil as well.
