I'm not too sure if one can bring the lives of past prophets as an example for not striving for Khilafa or political autonomy. Our political reality is very different than those traversed by past prophets.

I think the point he is making is that too often we become so preoccupied with issues like khilafa and political autonomy etc that we lose sight of the fact that we will be held accountable at an individual level. From my own experience, I've been involved in political activism and it's quite easy to lose one's deen in the process. I think his comment about the prophets is to demonstrate that despite their distractions they were able to stay focussed on what matters most i.e. worshipping their Lord.
