Inside the COVID-19 Outbreak that Ravaged San Quentin's Death Row
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 вер 2020
- Twelve death row prisoners at California’s San Quentin prison have died from COVID-19 or complications related to the disease, nearly as many people as the state has executed in the last 44 years. The broader outbreak at San Quentin has infected over two-thirds of all prisoners - 2,237 men total - and left 26 dead. Nearly 300 employees have also tested positive. The lone staff fatality was Sgt. Gilbert Polanco, a corrections officer nearing retirement after 34 years at San Quentin.
San Quentin’s death row COVID-19 outbreak began after prison officials transferred in sick inmates from a known hotspot. The virus spread like wildfire, fueled by overcrowding, dungeon-like architecture, and policies that discouraged people from being isolated if they became sick. VICE News spoke to four prisoners on San Quentin’s death row, as well as the families Polanco and a prisoner who died, about what happened during the outbreak.

Real good story guys, prisoners dying in death row how unexpected
@@sn3akydna314 They get someone's else's ashes... People don't know this. Nobody cares
Covid-19 doing what the state law makers couldn't do.
I read the bio's on each of these inmates. Child rapists, murderers of women, the homeless and innocent...not feeling it. They died a more humane death than their victims whose last moments were filled with horror and terror. I do however feel sympathy for the guards, crime victims and prisoners families.
So you don't care for law enforcement?!!!
palillo2006 bro what? Did you even read what he said, or you just trolling.
soft and shallow
That's real talk 💯👍
You disgust me
Each death row inmate costs $3 million dollars, very sorry for the guards and the innocent. Taxpayers saved millions
That's because the legal system is ultimately crooked, locking up innocent people all the time.
So sad that resources that may have been able to save someone else were used on a death row inmate.
Exactly!
They get to experiment on them to figure out what works.
Not all condemned inmates are guilty. I'm more sad that it was them and not you.
Covid did what the government should have done
They give ventilators to death row prisoners...??? I just don't understand...
Hold up hold up... vice is trying to make us feel bad about “DEATH ROW” inmates dying due to COVID?!... I call it speeding up the process tf.
La Capone better they die sooner and save tax money
@Bunghoolio who
Looks like covid will save the state some money.
I feel bad for the prison staff.
@sad boi you must be a criminal!
They literally brought covid into the prison and it's them you feel sorry for? Pathetic
I remember how smart I thought I was at 13

No one has been executed in Cali since 2006.
his brother was on death row "i didnt think he was gonna die"
Imagine conflating getting a virus with being executed.
Jesus dude. get a clue.
😆
Glad Mother Nature is doing what CA is too scared to do.
It's hard to sympathize with the death row prisoners as they had committed grievous and horrible crimes against humanity, but I feel sad for the other people present in the prison, especially the police officers that have to suffer this deadly illness due to their duty and the prisoners that have been incarcerated for far lesser crimes.
You feel sorry for the officers that brought this virus into the prisons? Misplaced energy imo
You should feel sorry for people o death row. They did commit terrible crimes. But there is a reason why the US only uses certain methods for carrying out the death penalty. And a reason to why they don't dump every convict in a dank hole for a certain amount of years.
@@lolz476 prisons are ran by people genius so what choice do they have?
@@Vet0714 the virus is in prisons ONLY because it was brought in my guards.
They did not do 'horrible crimes against humanity', most of them killed one person. Also, three out of ten death row inmates have their sentences overturned and 185 turned out to be completely innocent. It just doesn't mean that much when someone is on death row.
Sounds like an exposure experiment.
Im not sure why this is even a story.
The guards who died I feel sorry for their families.
sad boi You don't have to guess who I feel bad for. I feel bad for the guards and their families. The prisoners are in that prison for hideous crimes, why would I feel sorry for them? Are you sorry for the victims and families that they killed?
sad boi The majority of prisoners say they were wrongly convicted, and I guess there probably is one that is, in that prison. But to suggest all these violent murderous animals are all innocent is ridiculous. I hope they repented of their crimes, but I am assuming they did not, if they never faced the truth of what they had done. Sorry you were wrongly accused, if you were. My sympathies will always be with the guards and families. The prisoners must find their own peace and sympathies.
sad boi I don't understand your reasoning, and it's okay not to agree with me. That is one thing I love about mankind, we can disagree, but still wish the other best wishes, which I do for you.
@sad boi did you not watch the video? the inmates brought it in
Yeah real shame a virus did what california wouldn't.
Vice do you need to hire someone to write captions for your videos? Many of these scenes are not easy for those who have difficulties hearing
My prayers and love goes out to the Polanco Family. You are in our thoughts. From your family in Southern California🙏🏽🇺🇸✝️.
I’m know there’s a lot of issues with false imprisonment, and certainly there have people on Death Row that didn’t deserve to be there. But, if the evidence is overwhelming, and they are meant to be there, you should not be giving them a voice. They lost their rights due to their actions.
@5:15 I wonder what the family of the 2 women he murdered felt like?
💯🎯
This is wonderful news, whats the problem?
Are you really expecting us to have sympathy for a man who died after he raped and murdered woman in cold blood?
Ca is the problem not the solution! Recall Newsome!!
My dad was a CO at San Q when I was a child until I was 4 he left after the escape attempt at the San Rafael Convention Center a DA and judge were shot.
California: 13 executions in the last forty years
Texas: hold my beer 🍺
Some good from Covid. Saved the state some money.
the subtle poetry in asking borderline illiterate prisoners how the operations should be run
Idk why do they keep them in a hospital to prevent death from covid even though their gonna die from execution
@sad boi so true, people get blame because they found finger prints in site,it like going to a new friend house and then like an hour later after you left the killer committee his crime but left no trace while you did.
I find it hard to believe, that the families of death row inmates, are more concerned about the way their love ones died. Want to talk about the death row inmates children. What about the victims, their families and children. If you are on death row one thing is certain, you are going to die. The manner in which you die is irrelevant.
@sad boi

that would literally make that prison the COVID SUPERSPREADER OF THE WORLD
Maybe it's wrong, but I find it hard to feel sympathy for convicted murderers dieing from the virus, but definitely feel it for the relatives.

Why the interviewer is wearing a valved mask?
probably because it has a more advanced filter
Because it expels moisture so your glasses/goggles dont fog when working with it. It's only protecting him that expels everything that he breathes out
Yeah there's still alot of dummies out there not knowing what the proper masks to wear are.

Right 😒
My goodness!!!
Awwwwww. Life on deathrow a little rough?!?! awwwwwwwww
Right lol? Like why the hell are people sympathizing with murderers.
I hope they aren't innocent
It's this kind of attitude that's contributed to the already poor conditions at prisons across the US. Just bc someone is on Death Row doesn't mean that person is guilty. As others have pointed out there have been multiple cases where innocents were found on Death Row. And even then, we cannot just leave those people to die and suffer cruel, unusual punishment from a contagious disease. There's a reason why we no longer have guillotines or electric chairs to execute people anymore. What is the message we send when, instead of humanely executing someone, we just leave them to die a slow painful death from disease?
Alvin Ong you are speaking to a two time loser by the way.
Alvin Ong I went to prison twice, got out in 2005. Was arrested on a phony charge in 2016, took it to trial and won. Now there is a lawsuit about a Brady violation from the D.A. They knew I was innocent and still tried a case. Want to know how innocent? I am a single father to a six year old girl and in 2016 her mother did not like the custody arrangement so she made up a domestic violence case. Two weeks later her conscience gets to her and she admits she made it all up. To make matters worse, she also had a friend at her halfway house go to the investigator to tell them that my ex went around looking for conspirators at her halfway house but guess what.. only one person would help.. everyone else was digusted she did not appreciate someone who cared for her kid while she was in prison to get out and stab that person in the back. Now they knew all of this, and STILL had me indicted before a grand jury. I went to court in a historically famous county for conviction rates. Tarrant County Texas in Fort Worth is the most populous and one of the largest counties in size that ALWAYS votes law and order conservative. Honestly, I am not that mad. It isnt about the money, I will take $1 in judgement. I do NOT want men/women railroaded by D.A.’s due to the #MeToo movement. Sadly, most men accept a plea deal. I WOULD NOT.
0 sympathy for anyone serving a life sentence. They should actually be put down to save taxpayer money
Being out to work would be a good idea.
Crimes against humanity!
Imagine making a coffin from mahogany.
What a waste!
I think focusing on the death row inmates was a huge mistake if the idea was trying to get the audience to sympathize with the prisoners. The truth is these people’s sentences have already been determined by a court of law and any further suffering or death, brought by the mismanagement of the prison staff and whoever made the decision to bring the Chino prisoners in, is extraneous additional punishment and unjust. The prison system failed here and I haven’t heard any sort of plan, with the virus at 2,200 cases, this is also a danger of spreading to the public it’s a hotspot and the prison staff will likely have to quarantine I feel sorry for everyone involved. However, the more heinous your crime, the less empathy I have for you.
It's terrible what's happening to the terrible people on death row.
The guards are suffering as well.
This is so sad.

Definitely by design. Time to take our country back.
Won't someone PLEASE think of the criminals??????????
problem is the prison is over crowded with poor conditions as are most US jails,
A lot of people here seem to think that there is such a thing as 'justice' and that the guilty are behind bars and the innocent walk around freely. I'm sorry to say that this is not true. Three out of ten death row prisoners get their sentences overturned. This means that the legal system makes big mistakes, around 30% of the convictions have to be reviewed and turn out to be wrong. A grueling score.
Covid is a punishment for humans disrespect to nature.

When people are to be executed, and they attempt to take their own lives by suicide, the prison will do everything in their power to thwart those attempts. If you're lucky enough to, I don't mean to sound morbid but if you have severed an artery with a crude instrument, they will charge you with another crime because no one can kill you except them. The authorities. I would think they would do everything in their power to make sure you don't die on their watch. From COVID... from anything. After all , your life belongs to the State. The state executes people who executed people. Who's the bad guy ? And who here can say who's really innocent?

I feel sympathy for the workers, not the inmates
Expect more transfers, then more convictions, then new prisoners, then repeat.
I kinda don't care if someone of death row dies. That's the point no?

Have a wonderful service for the officer, forget the death row guy !
But yet there holding hand !
If they literally brought SICK inmates to a prison that hadn't reported ANYTHING. It was done on purpose. There's no way that was an oversight.
Soooo.. where else are you going to put them.. your place?
I hope all prisons get infected... they all die... we save millions... i say dont let them have masks... it will be all over in a years time

There's been alot of people on deathrow that was innocent & some change & some don't. CDCR didn't take the proper procedures when they did that transfer & the result was alot of people died. Then people want to blame the inmates when it's the prison guards they need to be worried about

ok so they have been in solitary on death row for 30+years. the most SECURE place inside of a secure place. how did they get COVID19? anyone else find this a little suspicious?
That is not how it works.
You have this idea that they are packed in like sardines. All by their lonesome, with no contact with anyone.
Yes they are in a separate unit than general population inmates.
They have daily yard privileges.
They have church services, visiting privileges .
They have almost all the privileges as general population inmates.
Just modified to accommodate their deathrow status.
They are also on single cell status.
That means no cell mates.
The problem start when they are taken to medical or visiting.
No matter how clean those facilities are kept, covid-19 still lingers on surfaces and in the air.
For the record.
San Quentin had zero cases of covid among staff or inmate population.
We did are job and did it well.
However, when you are given inmates from another prison.
That were not adequately tested.
Things will go wrong and they did.
All staff that were involved in processing those transfered inmate became unknowing potential spreaders.
That included the transportation teams, medical staff, inmate workers, counselors and of course c/o's.
Then you have all the free staff .
Free staff handle all the programs San Quentin has.
All of the above mentioned people work multiple housing units on a daily basis. Including deathrow.
We at San Quentin worked our collective asses off trying to keep covid-19 out of San Quentin.
Our record proved that.
By the time we realized we had positive cases.
The damage was already done.
All that being said.
Nothing I or anyone else can say, will change your mind.
If you want to believe conspiracies. That's on you.
We will not!
We all lost a damn good friend and Sargeant in Gilbert Palanco.
He was good man with a big heart.
