About 30 to 40% of residents don’t have running water, which makes following basic CDC guidelines, such as hand-washing, almost impossible.
The Navajo reservation, about the size of West Virginia, has had one of the highest per-capita rates of COVID infection in the U.S. As of July 19, Navajo Nation tallied 8,593 cases and 422 deaths - that's more confirmed cases than 10 states and more deaths than 16. About 30 to 40% of residents in the reservation don’t have running water, which makes following basic CDC guidelines, such as hand-washing, almost impossible. On top of that, there are only 12 healthcare centers and 13 grocery stores for the 173,000 people who live on the reservation.

I’m Navajo and this nation needs a government. My people need water, my people need electricity. My people need grocery stores, hospitals, easier access to emergency services and proper roads. It hurts seeing my people suffer.
We can blame decades of poor tribal leadership of corruption and embezzlement. We could be a prosperous tribe. It's the leaders who hinder better life on the rez.

I'm a navajo and I live in Utah .we Utah Navajo we have always been ignored by the Navajo Nation government throughout the pandemic we Utah navajo people have been getting donations from the people of Salt Lake and other areas so far nothing has come from our own government right now we used to be separate from the Navajo Nation are roads are fixed Everyday by our state of Utah we were being taken care of by our state and also we look out for ourselves but Navajo Nation took over our road systems and took over a lot of our systems here in Utah and so far everything has gone down to the hill are roads are very bad there's no from the Navajo Nation and when we try to reach out to our government all they say is that they'll get to us and it never happens.... I'm proud of who I am I'm proud to be part of the First Nations and I'm proud to be a Diné (navajo) but it makes me very angry that our own government tends to ignore its own people. And I do agree with one of the men's saying is that the only time the Navajo Nation will help you is when it "election day" I'm not afraid to say it our Navajo Nation government is extremely corrupted.

Don't forget one of the largest radioactive material spills in WORLD HISTORY was in Church Rock, NM. Devastated the area and was never properly cleaned up. There are all these movie about Chernobyl, but no one talks about New Mexico.

Yesss! Nobody ever talks about it! The biggest radioactive spill in U.S. history and basically nothing done. In addition, the uranium mines whose tailings spilled knew it was unsafe and there is an army corp report stating as much, stating that the dam that eventually broke to allow the spill was cracked. And a nuclear spill three times smaller, at around the same time, in a white area (Three Mile Island), was immediately cleaned up and the surrounding communities compensated ($25 Million Settlement). You then look at the Church Rock spill and within three months only 1% of the radioactive spill was cleaned up and the average settlement to the community was $2000. And community members were not even told not to drink from the creek this radioactivity spilled into for DAYS!!!

I knew a couple of people who worked in morgues and they liked it. They said it was peaceful down there. I think folks watch too many scary movies.

I totally agree. Hearing another tribal official is stealing money or just hiring their relatives that aren’t qualified, combined with COVID is a deadly combination. Also we need to find other ways to be self sustained with our own resources and not depend on the treacherous US government.

I have been to the Navajo Nation many times, it is a beautiful place with some wonderful people, that said, corruption is endemic and alcohol and drug abuse is rampant. I predict that a year from now the money will be gone, nothing will have been accomplished, and no one will know whom to blame.
Time to change who they vote in ... change is hard for us Natives.
Paper trail, always shows the guilty. An material things not all family members should own brand new vehicles every year. U can tell who's dipping there hands in the pot. But yet they stil get voted in come election time.

tribal nations struggle due to the very nature of their social construction. The crime on the reservations and corruption in their courts make life real hard.

They already hold their own democratic elections and also vote in Federal elections, such as for the president. What the Navajo need moving forward is more business opportunities that can be done with neighboring states and overseas trade partners.

I don't understand why you guys are hating on Nez. I thought what he said made sense. Plus he is not the only leader on the rez. There are the council members, chapter officials, and others that funds trickle through. The chapters that are doing well are that way because at some point before Nez became president there was a chapter official that made sure water lines and electricity and home repairs were followed through with. I grew up on the reservation, i've been to chapter meetings in Navajo mtn, shonto and Forest Lake and I know the frustration. I've also seen corruption in these areas along with Tonalea chapter. I know what it's like to want for water, electricity and cell service. All problems that were there long before New. If anyone saw this pandemic coming they were ignored. No one was ready for it anywhere. Yet there are people like yourselves that bash the leader who is doing what he can when he can. I just don't understand you people.

Why is this not a priority for the better of the tribe? You’re right, it is not just Nez who have done the tribe wrong, but because of years and years of inaction it has made the reservation and ultimately your tribe hit so hard by Covid. You are a mighty tribe and will survive this just as so many events in OUR history has tried to eliminate our beings. I send nothing but love and positive energy your way.

Years ago... Maybe 2011 or 12, or maybe earlier... reps went around with clip boards in hand to scattered housing areas going from house to house knocking on doors, asking, are there people living at this house, or that house, peaking through windows checking to see if places were lived in, or not. If nobody answered they moved on. If the place didn't look lived in they moved on. Others where people answered the knock or there was someone around who could say Yes, someone lives there, just not home right now, they vouched and put people's names, the coordinates or rough address down. They got on the list. If you missed it, you got the run around. If you moved in later into a house that was passed on, you got the run around. If your not persistent with the money or vehicle to do the run around, you missed the whole thing. Then A couple years later workers come through putting in fixtures if needed, piping if needed to the locations on the list. If you weren't on the list, your waiting for the next round of elections, and the next round of funds if there is ever any. And that's with a working chapter. If you lived in an area with crooked officials or even a not quite so educated paper management, the people missed out. Some areas it was all based on nepotism. That's why in parts of the reservation it's very sad. Then there's parts of the reservation where people are getting by. Then there's places where one house has nothing but has neighbors with everything.

The virus is really making a horrible impact on these kind of communities. The government should respect the indigenous people and help them in every way they can. They are the land owners but they are being treated like 2nd class citizens. Just another way the U.S. is trying to erase Natives and their beautiful culture.

Worked on the reservation for 1 year. Lost a friend and was so devastated because she was such a strong nurse. A true filghter! The first one in for work...the last one I would have expected to go down.

Thats the compromise for limited autonomy. Plenty of Native Americans live outside reservations and are treated like any other citizen. And plenty of the natives are happy with the arrangement because their tribes get special legal benefits like being able to operate casinos, use drugs that would otherwise be illegal, form their own local governing body and exclude people from it in ways that would be completely illegal in any other part of the U.S. They can also get huge scholarships, the most points under affirmative action, and exclusive land rights. The trade off for this limited autonomy is that they don't always take priority like other states would. Not saying its totally fair or doesn't need some reform, but there is a reason why people living on reservations sometimes get treated differently than people living a normal part of the U.S. and many Natives have been okay with the trade off
President Ness seems kind of like a snake, never made direct eye contact while explaining where the money is, it's so sad that hard times expose how political everything is, everyone wants a piece of the pie.
@Baby Sauce The early draft had several millions of dollars to be allocated to fund items that the Federal Treasury would not approve of. As such that money would have to be paid back from the Navajo Nation if it was misspent in any way. The CARES Act specifically details what the money can be spent on. Even the overtime pay of $1.2 million for law enforcement overtime pay was not appropriated.

True and each town on the reservation has a c chapter house and they make decisions for their local community they vote on some decisions but the tribal government distributes the money to each chapter an allotment and just hope they are all honest

I'm Navajo, originally from the Shiprock, NM region of the reservation...and for the past 30 years lived in Salt Lake and Los Angeles. I was shocked to learn that 30% of the Navajo reservation still have no running water. Come to find out that most of the Navajos that don't have running water are concentrated in Western Navajo (Tuba City region) formerly "Bennett Freeze area", southern section of Navajo Nation (including Dilkon, Wide Ruins, along interstate 40, and into NM surrounding Gallup area). Most of the Shiprock Agency region do have running water, as well as most of the Eastern Agency (northern section). Why? I remember, when I was in third grade...living in remote area of the Shiprock Agency region, we finally got running water (that was nearly 40 years ago). I was for sure, we were some of the last to have gotten running water. I was wrong. Why have tribal government neglected some regions of the reservation, while delivering for other regions of the reservation? Also, the Navajo Nation received over $554 million from a settlement - 6 years ago. Why they didn't use it for water infrastructure, I don't understand. I sincerely thought that almost everybody had running water and electricity. Instead, I came across an article that most of the the $554 million the Navajo Nation received - 6 years ago were deposited to the Navajo Nation "stockpile" (Master Trust Funds)...which is now worth nearly or more than $4 billion (Note: it was worth $3.28 billion in 2017). No running water and electricity, yet the Navajo Nation is able to purchase coal mines (Cloud Peak Energy) in Montana and Wyoming, and now looking at purchasing Remington Outdoor (firearms). Nothing against the current NN president, I know he's doing the best he can...just some bad decisions from past administrations.

Im Navajo and i really pray our people get help. Alot of money gets taken under the table by the tribal goverment. Does not get to the people. Some chapters before the pandemic were under investigation for missing funds. That gentleman was right when Navajo elections come they make false promises.
That leader does not seem trustable.

It's always been corrupted they can't help enough with anything really just themselves and relatives see some big houses with nice cars only for paved roads an some people around them who are not related live in poor conditions also kids an adults who act like there in some gang vandalism all over the community I got a lot to say about we're I live it's a sht hole because of these kinda people narcissists basterds I've lived out the reservation mostly an 3 years ago moved here to help my grandparents so I see how these people can be some are good but most are in it for them selves they just don't show it.

I grew up in the Navajo Nation and my great grandma and my grandms live there right now. I worry so much about them right now. They can't really visit because they are worried as well. I wish it wasn't like this right now for my people

We grew up with no running water & and we washed our hands all the time.
I grew up w/no electricity/ plumbing had to haul water for drinking and bathing..hauled wood for heat and going to town once a month was a luxury..and if you didnt't have a vehicle you hitch a ride and were at the mercy of relatives or strangers..finally in the late 7 0 we got elect and water ..it lasted for awhile w wear / tear from the cold weather and the clay soil ..plumbing succumbed eroded and no plummets in town to fix it or couldn't afford to fix it ..soo we need businesses on the reservation and the tribe can't figure this out each community needs. A Plummer ..we don't even have restaurants for each community ..harrrd life

As an ICU nurse that’s cared for 100’s of native Americans with all types of illness and Covid-19, the loss saddens me and haunts me till this day! I would love to share my story because it’s eye opening to say the least.

I worked at what was Bernilllo County Indian Hospital (my Grandfather died there), now University Medical Hospital, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Retired disabled in Tucson, I met the Regional Director of BLM [ Bureau of Land Management] that was/is responsible for the Dineh [Navajo] Nation. I’m deeply shocked NOTHING has changed in the 20yrs since I paid attention to epic plight!

That particular question, is what the native communities have been asking their leaders about for weeks now, the reporter basically asked that question on behalf of the navajo people...unfortunately, the evil and greedy are still at play.

I was going to mention the same thing. Because they are a sovereign nation they can rely on their own government of people. If the Navajo Nation government is going to stockpile money and doesn't know how to distribute funds quickly then this will have great effects on its own people. They need leadership training and guidance if they lack the knowledge of how to take care of their own nation and they should also be investigated on how these funds are not being used properly and efficiently. @@coldwar45

When I taught in norther New Mexico some of my students were from the Navajo Nation, they meant a lot to me, and my heart goes out to the Navajo Nation now. I will find some way send help. Im so very sorry.

Everyone suffers through this pandemic. I'm aware that this virus does not discriminate but I'm curious to why and how covid-19 was able to spread to these isolated native reservations?

People have to travel to the border towns to get food and supplies. When you live on the Rez, the closest Walmart is in the next state or 3 hours away to Flagstaff. They have contact with outside people every weekend in Gallup, Farmington, Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Albuquerque. It spreads through families that have multiple people living in one house due to the housing crisis. The first cases were spread through a church gathering.
Alcoholism. Some of us have at least one member in the family who panhandles for days just so they can get their next drink and also congregate with others who share the same problem and same bottle. Eventually they go home, not knowing they were just exposed to the virus, and spread it to their elders or relatives with health problems. I have lost 3 grandpas and 1 aunt beause of this issue invovling both the virus and alcoholism.
Another thing I would like to add coming from someone is Navajo. We have people that deal with drugs and bring that to reservation. Once drug dealers are outside of the reservation line they might carry the virus on them but aren’t aware of it yet. Those drug dealers are making deals behind closed door on the reservation. They are spreading it to their consumers. Those consumers spread like wildfire. Some of those consumers are homeless. Some can be living with family members and spread to the house they live. Housing on the reservation is another issue. There are list of people who are trying to get housing and home site lease for land but those take up to years or a few months if you are connected to someone in the system of Navajo nation. Homeless on the reservation, these individuals could be a potential carrier of the virus. They travel within the Navajo Nation to different areas. That how it starts again. Large gathers in churches. Family going to the valley for tournaments. And a lot of varies ways on contracting this virus. Some families have to travel off the reservation to get supplies such as food and water. There is endless of things that we go over to help educate you about life on the reservation.
Well the first thing most of us can agree on is that the virus is man-made, second, the covid has affected the NN because the majority have diabetes, have cardiovascular disease, and suffer from alcoholism, all which brings forth other health problems, which results in poor immune system. And then there is poor diet. No running water is common in many households.
Thanks to the interviewer for doing much needed activism in bringing this out of the darkness.

I personally think this is shocking they couldn't view their loved ones. I mean their beloved was obviously medically safe after the coroner care and therefore the risk of a loved one coming into contact with lymph nodes, respiratory tissues or bodily secretions after death is remote to say the least.

The Navajo Nation President has line-item vetoed some items in the CARES Act funding, which has caused more delays. I, for one, think the money will go back to the US Government in December. The current style Navajo Nation government has not worked for the Navajo people in a long time.
