Shinchon has many universities, and has the advantage of convenient transportation, so the university culture developed and grew into a major commercial district in Seoul from the 1970s to the 1990s. However, in the 2000s, due to the indiscriminate commercialization, the number of empty stores increased as visitors rents rose sharply, and the number of visitors turned to the nearby Hongdae area, leading to a slumping decline. As a result, in 2010, Yeonsei-ro, the main road, was transformed into a public transportation district, and many events were held to revitalize visitors.
