Great song. I remember hearing this song way back in the 70's by Red Sovine. I trucked for 44 years. Always loved this classic. Still hear it occasionally on Willie's Roadhouse
Late 60s and 70s... era of ballads. Some rock did too-- listen to Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". They used to tell stories, much like medeval chansons or ancient bards. Today? 3 phrases repeated over and over, auto-tuned. (How to make a "Pitbull" hit: hop in Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine, travel back to 1984, buy a Tandy synthisizer set to "Latin rhythem", come back to 21st century, have Pitbull "sing" a few random words of Spanish then yell "Miami!" Bingo-- platnum record.)
If Tommy's recording of his OWN ballad, Phantom 309 had been printed and released somewhere else other than the studio in Charlotte; if he could have released it via Capital, where he started, Tommy could have put Red Sovine's recording to shame!
Anybody besides me ever heard Tommy's song: I-85 and I-77 intersection in Charlotte ... He recorded it but I can't fine it anywhere ... Please help.... Great song

Country music was best when it told stories.

This guy wrote this classic, Red Sovine then went Rembrandt with it.
