It's to get Russian troops away from the areas they're trying to do an actual offensive in. Do you not understand what the fuck a shaping operation is?
@@ThighErda That makes the offensive in Zaporizhzhia a shaping operation then? You can't divert much troops as Russia has territorial regiments stationed as mobile reserves across the front and it's almost impossible to break through because of dense minefields and layered defence. You will very likely notice how some units are marked "[Territorial]" all across the frontline, which represent mobile reserves for some sectors of the front.
This why neither side is launching attacks apart from platoon-sized attacks supported by artillery and armoured fighting vehicles to take treelines, small villages or fighting positions. The guy writing the comment isn't wrong, Ukraine landing troops in Krynky served zero purpose as now they trapped several hundred marines who are very exposed to Russian artillery and aviation and have no chance of breaking out and they took the Russian bait at Bakhmut.
Ukaine sent some of their best fighting formations of mechanized and specially-trained soldiers to Bakhmut which was a diversionary offensive which delayed the Ukrainian offensive by several months and allowed Russia to build the Surovikin Line all because Zelensky did not want to give up some shitty mining town to Russia. Bakhmut's strategic significance isn't large, but it became one of the most important battles of the war because of how much men and material both sides committed to it.
Time and time again, Ukraine has repeatedly thrown in not just expendable manpower like Territorial Defence, but Western-trained and equipped mechanized units to hold or take strategically insignificant areas which do not offer it a better defensive position, such as in Robotyne (or Robotino) which just sent several hundred vehicles and thousands of men to their grave and did nothing but create a difficult to defend salient near well-prepared Russian defensive lines.
The term shaping operation can't really be applied to most Ukrainian offensives unlike say Russian ones in Avdiivka and Bakhmut which were all partially encircled before the cities were stormed and taken. I was personally surprised at how quickly Ukraine gave up Avdiivka despite it being one of the most fortified position on earth and the line, actually one of the few positions worth holding unlike Bakhmut which was not that significant. This could either be the Ukrainians making an effort to avoid their past failures and learn from their mistakes, or in itself could have been another blunder.
Sorry for the long comment, took me about seven minutes to write since I really see some terms overly-used despite them not really applying to the situation such as the term "frontal assaults" to pay one side in a poor light despite the entire front being manned and covered by dense minefields, trenches, machine gun and artillery positions so there is not really any other way to go than forward if you want to advance.

Those are oil and gas platforms. The Russians equipped them with radar and AA systems, and every once in a while Ukrainian commandos will capture one and take all the equipment.

Here’s a crazy idea: What if a strongly pro-Ukraine country like France agreed to temporarily leave NATO and other defence treaties/organisations and fully intervene in Ukraine, sending their army and supplies independently? It could avoid a NATO-Russian war and would be a massive boost to the Ukrainians. Just a thought, it’s probably not a good idea.

Problems I can immediately think of: Lack of morale to fight in a foreign war, potential of Russian strikes into the country which could cripple the economy, problems with EU membership and other organisations, massively escalating the war., etc. But it could force Russia to negotiate as they likely would struggle to face off against a NATO member and Ukraine at the same time, and put an end to this madness. Food for thought
Their citizens aren't willing to die fighting for Zelensky. + If that happened Russia would fully mobilize their army and would be able to conquer all of those countries.
