  • NFL Films was founded in 1962 by Ed Sabol and run by his son, Steve. In 1966, Sam Spence was hired to provide music for the filmed highlights. Sam composed and recorded many of the early, memorable theme songs. John Facenda was a fixture on Philadelphia radio and television for decades before joining NFL Films. John narrated and did voice-over work on several NFL Films projects from 1966 until his death in 1984.

As a Steelers fan, I've always said if they never existed, I would probably be a Raiders fan.. their uniforms, that Silver and Black is just timeless and hard AF - their reputation of being "the villains" of the NFL, and embracing that moniker.. and this 1 song encapsulates all of that..

I think every football fan can agree John Facenda was a national treasure.
Personally, being a Raiders fan, I am thrilled my team's theme song is purely orchestral. It brings out such a unique... vintage air, and it is fitting, since the vintage Raiders were so great and the modern Raiders have a long way to go to recapture it, but listening to this, especially with the narration, makes me forget any negative feelings and fills me with Raider pride, even when there's not much to be proud of.
(Of course, I write this comment fresh off a 63-21 win on Thursday Night Football, so I am proud right now.)

They were pretty much the same team....if you'd have dressed the Steelers roster in Silver and Black and the Raiders in Black and Gold, you'd have never know the difference from either their style of play....or their excellence. Back in that era, it didn't get any better than Steelers vs. Raiders.

***** Growing up in NY we had our own "Voice of God", Bob Sheppard, the long time PA announcer for the Yankees and NY Football Giants. To hear that deep, crisp voice w/monotone inflection and perfect enunciation booming through the stadium made you feel like you were in a cathedral or something. He introduced every player the same exact way DiMaggio to Jeter: "Now batting the (position, number, name, number)". As a Giant season ticket holder as well i can still hear that voice in my head saying "Simms to Bavaro...touchdown on the play" or "Jaworski on the attempt...sacked by Taylor".

    • @BobBarry4
      @BobBarry4  8 років тому +2

Oh yes, I'm familiar with Bob Sheppard's work. He truly was a legend. I was fortunate enough to grow up listening to Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn on Phillies' broadcasts, and for the last forty years, Merrill Reese on Eagles' games. But I think my favorite announcing team ever would be Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier when they did NFL games from 1974 - 1980. They had a great chemistry and really seemed to be enjoying themselves, which carried over to their audience. Many people think Pat Summerall and John Madden were a better team - and they were great - still I preferred Summerall and Brookshier. Man, those were the days...

As a Buccaneer fan when I was young, I watched that 2002 Super Bowl at my Raider fan friend's house!
His uncle gave me a lecture before the game about "Commitment to excellence." I actually felt bad for that family!

    • @TheGameCube64Guy

And then for pretty much nearly 20 years after losing that Super Bowl to the Buccaneers, the Raiders have been very far from the "Commitment to excellence".

As a kid...this was my favorite team, they were build differently than any other team, had some great players that were also great characters....and the most important...they usually won.

I have been a Cowboys fan since I was 6 years old watching the Boys decimate the Dolphins in the 72 Super Bowl(71 season) a Miami team that would go undefeated the next season...ever since then I have been a DIEHARD Cowboy fan, HOWEVER, if this doesn't give you goosebumps nothing will. Hell, makes me want to take my 53-year-old beat-up body out to the flag football field or hell, even the sandlot for some tackle lol. The 70's Raiders were a monster team, would have been a dynasty in most decades but the 70's had two, Pittsburgh(UGH) and my Boys and don't forget the Vikings who went to 4 Super Bowls but never managed a win. 70's was the best time every in Pro Football...far better than what we get today, though I still love my Boys and still go crazy during their games...just not the same as the 70's!

Hot diggity dog yes !! 😅😅 Old school baby when I was a youngster I couldn't wait to watch the NFL highlights because I knew I would hear these exciting anthems that would have me glued to the highlights, not just to see the game reviews but for the anthems that are classic.

As a Raider fan, I kick myself everyday for giving up music. Used to be able to play trumpet but now it’s a distant memory. It would be amazing to see that trumpet line played live by some fans after every TD. Similar to the A’s dumb line back in Oakland.

    Forget the Buccaneers
The raiders were the OG pirates. Other teams thought of the raiders like actual pirates. A bunch of castoffs, thugs, nobody’s, strange players that turned into a vicious, attacking team.
Every team back then felt like they are going against a bunch of thugs at a tough and raunchy biker bar. That how it was back then when you play the raiders back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
No wonder they’re like the villains of the NFL. Wearing silver and black. A pirate symbol. And have those type of players and a GM/owner back then.
That’s how I would describe the Raiders
