This NFL Films music of the 1970's combined with John Facenda narrating made watching football highlights one of the truly great things about that era.
I still have John Facenda playing in my head and still get goosebumps! I was born in '59, used to tape NFL action, This Week in the NFL, and everything else I was fortunate enough hear the voice of God. I'd play this stuff for the guy's I played with. My blood BROTHERS, my high school teammates, the guy's I went riding with, and everybody else who wants to be something.
rules were different and better in the late 60s early 70s way better football game to watch .I don't even watch today s football. I would rather watch the repeats back then
As a Youth I would watch hours and hours of NFL Films, I would record every episode I could on VHS. I fell in love with the game because of NFL Films! Ed Sabol, Steve Sabol and the voice of John Facenda brought to life the history of the game and struck a passion in a child's heart! Watching & learning about the men who paved the way for the game that is the NFL was an outlet for a emotionally & physically abused youth to escape from reality and be at peace for a few hours with the men that ultimately became his heros!
My favorite NFL song, nothing else comes close. Best instrumental ever and takes me back to my youth in the early 70's watching the slow motion highlights. Thank you, Sam Spence for your great music and making wonderful memories for many boys, now men. If this doesn't fire you up, nothing will.
There is a special relationship between NFL films music and listeners of the 60s and 70s. This song especially sums up the challenges of competition, the youthful imagination of taking the field, striving to succeed and, figuratively and literally achieving a goal. A treasure beyond any value.
Oh man, Early '70's. This Week in Pro Football with Tom Brookshire & Pat Sumerall would play last Sunday's highlights at around noon on a Saturday, with these fantastic themes from Sam Spence; this was one of the central themes. So psyched, we'd go out after the show and play glorious football like 12-yr old champions all day long. The '70's was a pretty damn good time for growing up.
The Quarterbacks long passes....the running back....and most of all it was in slow motion....watching some of the very, very best of all time....it was a great time for use as kids...
Thanks for this post. I grew up in the 70s as a little boy watching this week in pro football 🏈 with Tom Brookshire and pat Summerall doing a weekly synopsis a each game. The show was only 1/2 to 1hr but I waited for it like a kid in a candy store lol its all good
We used to try to jump over a hedge separating two back yards. The hedge was the defensive line and we would alternate between being Leroy Kelly and Calvin Hill - with these tunes as soundtrack. Of course, you had to not fumble the ball. Thanks for reminding me!
@@bcmac4641 you clearly haven't seen Freeway Jim's awesome road videos. Its because of his channel I discovered this little gem that I sometimes play when driving on the backroads of Wisconsin hehe.
Funny thing is, the 70s were when the Giants were so bad, yet even though I was and still am a Giant fan, I don't mind at all going back to the 70s when I hear this music.
@edward king, I'll give you a little more info to show just how crazy things were. I am related Vince Lombardi. My grandmother and his mother were first cousins. Anyway, back in the 60s, the whole family were Packer fans because of Cousin Vince. As a little kid, there I am reveling in Packer glory. However, when Vince left the Packers, the family had a choice, do we go Jets or Giants? Back then the Jets were coming off Super Bowl III and were good. What do we do? We become Giant fans, of course.
Ah…remembering watching those NFL Films highlights on Saturday's from the previous Sunday games. The Over The Hill Gangs music with George Allen's Redskins team and the Dallas Cowboys making their comebacks. The early 70's were the best of times of NFL Football. Thank you Ed and Steve Sabol with the authoritative god like voice of John Facenda. And the great Sam Pence putting the inspirational music. God Bless you and RIP for all the memories you gave us.
One of the greatest instrumentals ever ! I could not wait until it was played on this week in pro football back in 1971 I got out my duke football and the song would be playing in my mind as I played football
NFL Films has lots of great scores, but this one has got to be the most epic, motivational piece they made. When I hear this, I want to sprint 100 yards and tackle somebody.
Oh! How I love this fabulous piece of music by the legendary Sam Spence! Priceless memories of the days when games were played on grass in the elements! I loved the good old days when the weekend highlights were on TV! 🏈

Classic NFL films song but it always makes me incredibly sad, I guess because it’s tied into my memory of My Dad and me watching NFL highlights and then he left me and our family.
Of all the NFL film music classics the one titled " the over the hill gang " must be considered one of the greatest of all time truly magnificent awe inspiring and very powerful all macho perfect for smash mouth football truly a mans game unlike any other sport period. Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Jack Youngblood, Hacksaw Reynolds, Nolan Cromwell, the recently departed Isiah Robertson. Great Rams D in the 70s. Tough football in those days.
This week in NFL was our only hi lite show, it was shown on Saturday's and this music with countless others from early 70s to this day still resonates. I am still in backyard running in slow motion with neighbor kid humming the great songs of Sam Spence.....GO BILLS

Majestically evokes mud-stained images of scarred, bloodied gladiatorial men pummeling each other in the rain, in the snow, in the cold on December-dead grass fields in the decrepit gloom of dimly-lit stadia long since vanished. Iron men, heroic men. Real men. Sadly, the league, the game and the players this magnificent music celebrate no longer exist.
