Thanks again for this video. Always clear and concise and I've used lots of tips from your videos on my own channel too. Yep we did this a few years back when shooting out in the field and when looking to save space and travel light we'd opt for this method too. Works well. Cheers

It works even better when you use a reverse ring. It costs about 5-10$ and by screwing it in instead of a filter, you can mount the lens on to the camera the wrong way round without having to hold it!
but it will destroy your lens i have lost 2 lens in a year now the sensor is full of dust too f reverse ring

Check out the FStoppers video that was just posted yesterday. They provide the same technique with a twist using a reverse ring (pun intended) so you don't have to hold the lens.

@Peter McKinnon Extra tip: If you want to control the aperture of the lens you want to use, do the following. choose the aperture manually (ie: f8 or f11) press and hold depth of field preview button and simultaneously un-mount the lens. This will allow you to choose a specific aperture, otherwise the lens will shut down to its minimum aperture.

Before long, whenever my wife would be walking by when I was watching any of your videos, she'd stop, and I'd catch her tuning in to whatever you were saying... "boy, he's certainly charismatic" she'd say... eventually both of my children were doing the same thing as they'd stop and listen in (they just did so in your last video when you were talking about wanting "a Yak in your house"). The video is 2min and 29 seconds. I would rather you elaborated on each video anyways. Might help people a bit more to know about custom adapters you can buy or extension tubes. Also, what about the aperture vs focus?

Love this! I've got a tip for ya; set your aperture to whatever you want in camera, hold the depth of field preview, then detach the lens while holding the DOF button to keep your aperture on the lens. Of course this doesn't matter if there is an aperture ring on the lens!

Some cameras don't allow you to take a photo if a lens is not attached
If you set them to manual mode they will. It makes sense that they can't do it if you're in any other mode, because they'll use the lens' electronics. But typically, in fully manual mode, with manual autofocus, it should work. Unless the designers of the camera are particularly sadistic.

Congratulations on smashing the 2 min tip!!! I can honestly say I've never tried this. I have macro lenses and I've used macro extension tubes to make a regular lens shoot close up macro shots, but never this. Will try now, just because I'm a child at heart and why the do-dickerty-donuts would I not!
