Anybody that watches this channel will know that I love Telecaster's.
In this video I put three different Fender Telecaster's through a few pieces to see which one I like the most for jazz guitar.
The Tele's used are a 2009 Fender Roadworn Telecaster, 2007 CIJ TL-62 Fender Telecaster and a 2017 Fender American Special Telecaster.
All guitars have gauge 10 strings. The CIJ and Mexican Tele have the Seymour Duncan alnico pro ii neck pickup.

If I had to decide without playing the guitars for myself I'd vote +1 the 2009 Roadworn for Jazz, it sounds so classy and charming.

I agree with that
The CIJ had the most clarity, which is what I look for in a tele neck pickup. I put a mini-humbucker from a 1969 Les Paul in the neck position of one of my teles, search over.
I vote for the butterscotch. Best jazz tone to me. The American sounds almost a semi hollow body guitar.
I love tele’s but they have got to have a humbucker in the neck position.
For me the special wins. Love all Telecasters also ❤
I think there's also a good jazz sound to be had from the *bridge* pickup. It's counterintuitive, but if you roll most of the tone off (look for that spot where it's just coming to life) and pick closer to the bridge (yes, closer), it's distinctively suitable. Kind of in Frisell/Lage territory.
Really appreciate this video for so many reasons. First off, great comparision of different teles (really). It's very easy to just assume a maple/ash 50's tele is best b/c it's what we seee most. Also great that you didn't go into the minute differences around wood, impedance, amp settings, etc. There's a beautiful simpliciity in finding an instrument that sounds amazing, feels better, and inspires one to play and create. They all sound good. 1 and 2 are similar; 3 has the most bite.

I was going to ask if, Alnico 2 or 3 pickups, would sound "nicer." (?)
The 2007 CIJ sounded the best to me. The road worn too muddy, the special too thin... CIJ is the goldilocks guitar in this test.

Midnight Blue! Hip choice of demo tunes there :) The 2017 batch of Road Worn Teles has a number of guitars that really lend themselves for the purpose - I should know, 'testing' that aspect for a couple of years now, both live and for recording. MIM all the way! The original (neck) pickup already did the trick; not a secret, but Lollar's 52' (low wound) made it a real fancy 'jazz' guitar

@@jamieholroydguitar Addendum, string gauges: 11s / rounds seem to yield good 'jazzy' results but that ingredient caters more to one's personal playing technique than to a 'jazz' tone - e.g. choice of amp (small tube amps!) and how it's dialed in with the guitar has a bigger effect - half the instrument really. Bill Frisell's solo performance of "It Should've Happened A Long Time Ago" ua-cam.com/video/LG4227DhphE/v-deo.html is a great example of heavier flats on Tele - not the most traditional jazz sound per se, rather cinematic ;) with jazzy qualities
The butterscotch sounds and looks better, I think. Probably I'm gonna buy an American one.

The Roadworn sounds fantastic. The American one next (although has a buzz?), then the Japanese last for me (it sounds muddy).

Cool, MIM is pretty good. This is only the entrance to the rabbit hole though. My personal preference is pine body, maple neck with a Charlie Christian or Ellisonic in the neck position. Also love the Ellis “Killa” in the neck though it’s not particularly jazzy.
Oh and a Bigsby.
I prefer the Japanese model overall. I own an American Performer Telecaster Hum with the humbucker in the neck position that sounds superb for jazz which is why I bought it. I also play a D'Angelico New Yorker and sometimes you just want to play on something simple. Nice playing by the way.

In this order:
The Butterscotch (would prefer it without the phony aging)
The American only slightly behind the Butterscotch.
The CIJ
Were I to buy any of the three it would be the American because
of the Butterscotch "road" antiquing; pretentious.
I bought a 2003 Highway 1 new and modified it with Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups, a Gotoh 6 saddle bridge, Vintage Tuners.
Excellent Jazz tone played through a Schertler David Amp. Otherwise I use a custom Blues Jr, one of 50 made.
For me the American wins - so much more articulate and you could easily make it less bright with the tone control or amp settings. Having said that it is the least good looking. I`d have the roadworn and put US pickups in it.
Road waorn best tone America 2nd with warmth .lookin to do same with Mexico model 90s issue. Still un sure of strings to chose.nice vid looking at courses .

I like the last one, the reddish colour one. The first one is a tad woolly, the second a tad bright. I thought the last one just had a bit more bloom.
I enjoyed your playing. Surprisingly, the maple neck Tele has the warmest woodiest tone, which I definitely preferred. What amp were you using ?

All good, but I think the Butterscotch MIM sounds best to me. Then again, it’s a sound I’m used to hearing: My own Tele (strung with.011 flatwounds) is an early MIM, 1991 serial number bought March 1992.

@@jamieholroydguitar As I posted in comments on a Rhett Shull video, I love my Gibsons, but the Tele is special: It was my first electric guitar.
Flatwound strings do a lot to making a guitar sound Jazzy.

Gauge 10s on the Japanese and Mexican Teles. I think 9s were on the American

Jazz tone = take any guitar and turn down the tone knobs until the sound loses all its highs.
