The "basic" baked beans here in the United States are the same as there. You do know that Heinz (pretty much the only type that people in Britain and Ireland eat) is an American brand, right? It's wasn't a 'traditional British food' until the Americans started shipping them over in the early 20th century. They started importing them before WW1, and heavily marketed them to the British Empire. The baked beans that you're thinking of (that aren't the same) are heavily sweetened with brown sugar, and are not 'plain' baked beans.
Many Brits don't know we also eat baked beans here in the US. Baked beans originated in North America from Native Americans then adopted and adapted by American Colonists. Sorry, neither Heinz or baked beans originated in Britain.
I tasted the Heinz beans from my UK section at my grocery store and it’s nothing like the baked beans I have. It’s much more tomato based sauce. I really didn’t care for it. Now not sure if that is the typical bean they have in UK, but even original flavored baked beans in US are sweeter. And no tomato based sauce.
Boston Beans are an older candy that are called that because they “look” like baked beans. Lemonheads are meant to be sucked on until they soften and then chewed. Charleston Chews are more interesting when frozen as are Milky Way(UK Mars Bar) Three Musketeers or Snickers. Swedish Fish are not better than your Jelly babies but they have a gel quality. Jolly Rancher’s are sucking candies and have divided opinion. Some love them some hate them. It is interesting that you find Hershey’s tastes like “sick”. The person who invented it discovered that to make it shelf stable for long distance travel, it had to be made with slightly sour milk product.
The long shelf life is because American GIs were given them in their rations during WW2. I’m sure people have seen those photographs of young soldiers giving Hershey bars to kids in UK and all over Europe during the war. I don’t think the kids minded the taste.

You don’t find it in mainstream stores. Many towns across America have locally owned chocolatiers that are as good as any European chocolate.
I don't believe the taste of HERSHEY chocolate is an issue for Joel and Lia as much as it is a dig at HERSHEY. I found your channel from Diane's. I love her channel so much. She is such an amazing person. Your episode with the American sodas was so much fun that I had to come here to get to know you guys better. When I was 15, after football practices, still in my uniform, I would ride my bike to the local restaurant where my sister in law worked as a server. They didn't have this on the menu but she would make me a Tootsie Roll milk shake. It tasted so much like the candy that I thought it was an actual thing. But it wasn't. She "invented" it by combining orange and chocolate flavors together with ice cream. It's a childhood memory I'll never forget because it was so amazing and something that you can't get anywhere else and I haven't had it since those childhood years. Whatchamacallit is still my favorite candy bar and they are available pretty much everywhere. Though my knowledge is limited to Idaho, and Oregon.
Whatchamacallit’s are my favorite candy bars! I live in St Louis, Mo and they are sold everywhere you can buy candy. I assume that’s true everywhere in the country but I don’t know for sure. IMO-Charleston Chews are the best when they are frozen. (and vanilla). 🤪
I love freezing charleston chew. You freeze it, then whack it on a counter and it breaks into bite sized pieces. It rapidly melts in your mouth so the fact it's frozen isn't a big deal.
At work one Halloween, we were passing candy around, and my friend brought really sour bubblegum, and I was enjoying the hell out of it. One guy came up and said, "Oh! can I have one?" We were like, "Sure!" He opened it and popped it in his mouth and he gave exactly the same reaction as Joel did! It was hilarious! Do find out what it is before you ask for some!
Diane pointing at herself as if to say, "Look at the face I'm making!" Ha ha! Joel and Lia sounded like they were just making babbling noises, before I realized they were saying "Hubba Bubba". Boston is the city that is closely associated with baked beans, and the nickname Beantown is sometimes used.
So fun to see Diane on your channel with you! Whatchamacallits are nationally distributed, but not the most popular candy bar. I think they're just called the baked beans because of the color.
Whatchmacallits have been around since I was a little boy. It’s one of my favorites along with 100 Grand and my newest, Reese’s Fast Break. My favorite UK/European candy is Lion bar.
Yay! Three of my favorite YTers got together! Watchamacallits are one of my favorites, too. While Hershey's chocolate is available at like 100% of the places selling chocolate Watchamacallits are in about 80%, I'd say.
Yes ‘watchamacallit’ can be roundly fairly well especially in the south there was also a ‘thingamajig’ candy bar not seen as much and from what I understand relaunched and rebranded to ‘Whozeewhatzit’ in 2021, I personally like thingamajig. The watchamacallit had regular rice crisp and the thingamajig chocolate rice crisp. I here they are good, never tried myself not much of a candy bar person.
Fun show! If you ever get a chance, try Clark (similar to butterfinger) or Zagnut (Peanut and Coconut). I like Bueno chocolate as it is light and AERO mint. Hershey Gold is interesting combination of peanut and pretzel. Also GNC has honey sesame crunch bites that are pretty good.
They still make Whatchamacallit?? That's most certainly retro 1980s!! It's one of those things that was never really very good but it was the 'in' thing while Michael Jackson was 'Beating It'

Nice selection of candy.
Haven’t watched already love it. Y’all are my favorite
Great collaboration! Love ya all.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m here Diane. I’ll watch the rest of the video, but here for her.
Two of my favorite channels. A very happy day.
From Upstate New York. Actually had a Whatchamacallit a couple days ago. First one I had seen in a while.
I've noticed they have them in grocery stores like Kroger or gas stations like Speedway.
My favorite is snickers candy bar. Have you all ever tried that from the USA?
Yes, that's a good one!
I love freezing charleston chew. You freeze it, then whack it on a counter and it breaks into bite sized pieces. It rapidly melts in your mouth so the fact it's frozen isn't a big deal.
Fun to see two favorite video worlds collide!
You guys have a UA-cam legend in Diane. I love her videos.
Great fun collab! I subscribe to both channels :)
Best major American candy:
Snickers, Butterfinger, Reese's, Payday. Specialized: Anything from Ghiradelli.
the vibe of the three of u together is amazing. joint america trip going on the books?
*hold up bowl*
"These is British and Irish candy."
(Half of the brands in it are American)
Is this the first collab between yall? I've been subscribed to both channels for a long time
At work one Halloween, we were passing candy around, and my friend brought really sour bubblegum, and I was enjoying the hell out of it. One guy came up and said, "Oh! can I have one?" We were like, "Sure!"
He opened it and popped it in his mouth and he gave exactly the same reaction as Joel did!
They are available everywhere, Whatchamacallits are my favorite here in America. The Lion Bar is my favorite in Ireland.
Hey guys just so you know there are cheesy jokes on the laughy taffy package! My kids love the jokes lol
Lemonheads are from right near my home, I grew up minutes away from the factory!
Can't believe they didn't have Pay day bar or Snickers,!?
So fun to see Diane on your channel with you! Whatchamacallits are nationally distributed, but not the most popular candy bar. I think they're just called the baked beans because of the color.
Whatchmacallits have been around since I was a little boy. It’s one of my favorites along with 100 Grand and my newest, Reese’s Fast Break.
My favorite UK/European candy is Lion bar.
Dream Collab! 😍💕
Whatchamacallits are everywhere. One of my favorites.
Yes, the whatcha ma call it’s candy bar is in CVS, Walmart, Five Below and supermarket’s and I am love it.
I love Whatchamacallits!! I want to try it's cousin Thingamajig.
Whatchamacallit-- that candy is available in ALL Walmarts in America! Pretty Good---i agree!
Whatchamacallits are everywhere, they sometimes have thingamajigs which I remember liking it more because it had more peanut butter
Okay this has been really good. We should have done this ages ago!
I came to your UA-cam because of Diane Jennings.
Haven’t had a whatchamacallit in yeaaarrsss. They are so good
They still make Whatchamacallit??
That's most certainly retro 1980s!!
It's one of those things that was never really very good but it was the 'in' thing while Michael Jackson was 'Beating It'
Love love love Diane!!
I need to buy a whatchamacallit asap!
I used to love Warheads as a kid.
Love Diane! I watch her too!
I love Reese’s peanut butter cups!
Reese's and "Whatchmacolit taste amazing. I've been purchasing them my whole life. Reese's are my absolute favorite candy ever. 👍
When I was in Hawaii fudgecicles and aĺe was a big thing. I used to have macaroons and rum. What candy best pairs with white wine.
