  • First time on The Late Late Show for Hothouse Flowers who perform their single ‘Love Don’t Work This Way’.
    Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin first appeared on The Late Late Show in 1986 under the name ‘The Incomparable Benzini Brothers’ having been discovered busking in Dublin.
    U2 singer Bono saw the Benzini Brothers perform and made contact with them. The Benzini Brothers had another band called Hothouse Flowers and Bono signed them to his label Mother Records.
    Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin are back to perform on ‘The Late Late Show’ with their band Hothouse Flowers. They perform their debut single ‘Love Don’t Work This Way’, released by Mother Records and currently at number seven in the Irish charts.
    The band features Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó Braonáin, Maria Doyle, Peter O’Toole, Jerry Fehily and Leo Barnes.
    This episode of The Late Late Show was broadcast on 15 May 1987. The presenter is Gay Byrne.

    What a band! Never get sick of Liam's vocals. The guy still sounds amazing to this day. The lovely Maria Doyle Kennedy singing too!

      Hardly any musicians ever played live on the shite shite show. Aslan even miles last year at their 40th-anniversary show. I was sitting in the audience disappointed. Roisin Murphy blasted it out live on the same night though.

    Liked this band (and grew up in a greenhouse) but they were kind of a one hit wonder in Canada here sadly. How big were they in Ireland? Cheers

      I always liked Maria Doyle (I think her name is, the woman singing there). The Hothouse Flowers I personally found them pretentious. But a lot of people were then.

      @@finolaomurchu8217 I'too have been an admirer of Maria Doyle-Kennedy over the years. She's made some really good albums and is a really nice person to boot. Excellent actress too.
