  • Enjoy the Magic Kingdom when it was brand new! This family records some amazing 8mm footage from their November 1971 visit to MK. Super smooth camera operation, nice views and slow pans. Some angles we have never seen before too.
    Enjoy!

There’s a beauty present in this film that’s lost in the MK today. Even the TTC looks pretty!

Everything is so stunning I wish they’d refresh some areas and make them look as beautiful as they once were

Beautiful footage. I first went in 1976 (2 years old). I am an annual passholder and still go frequently.

My first trip to WDW was in Nov 71 (Thanksgiving week). I was 2 years old. This was of course long before the addition of Space Mountain. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Feels like the main difference is in the day they wanted a good experience that made you want to spend money... now its like they focus the experience to *make* you spend money

I can still smell the new park scent. Too bad it's silent although I have the entire soundtrack hardwired into my brain. Great stuff !

I went in November 1971 soon after they opened. I was only 9 years old and I remember how amazing it was. My favorite then as is now is the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. The best place to eat back then was in the castle, King Stephan's Banquet I think they called it back then. It was amazing, they had the best prime rib. Everything was reasonably priced not like today and you had to use those ticket books for rides like A-E or something like that as I recall. You never seemed to have enough E tickets for the big rides...

Awww man. I miss all the different shops on Main Street USA. The Magic Shop was so much fun as a kid.

It looks like they got to the park at rope drops. Great shots of Main Street with nobody on it

Approximate number of middle class people in 1971 - 500 million (world population 3.7b). Approximate number of middle class people in 2024 - 4 billion. So there are potentially more people with the means to visit WDW today than there were people on the entire planet in 1971. So any time people wonder why the lines are so long, or the parks are so crowded…

How long were waits? What was the food being served?

Waits could be long for some of the more popular rides (Peter Pan's Flight was popular from day one), but I don't remember anything more than 30 minutes tops - ever. As for food, you could pretty much go to any restaurant and enjoy a meal without having to over-plan everything. My favorite was the Crystal Palace, which was buffet-style and oh so elegant! :)
