I studied Dürrenmatt's novel Der Richter und sein Henker last year for German A level, but I've also read Der Besuch der alten Dame. What I think is interesting about it in relation to human life is that it provides multiple values for a human life. There is the monetary aspect that Hank mentioned, but there is also the value of one human life, or rather the end of it, as expressed as an improved quality of life for the rest of the townspeople - sacrifice is an interesting way of valuing life.

It was so great watching you talk about one of my favourite plays! :D I'm German and it's amazing that Dürrenmatt is read in German classes elsewhere because here some people had to read it for their A levels. And I really loved your video.

I really love "Die Physiker" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. The amazing thing about his books is that they are so weird and unrealistic but still make you question a lot of things. Btw do you know "Das Unternehmen der Wega"?

Ich kenne Dürrenmatt, habe aber nie "Der Besuch der Alten Dame" gelesen. Das werde ich jetzt auf jeden Fall nachholen! (I know Dürrenmatt, but I never read 'The Visit'. So I'm definitely going to catch up on that!) :D

This sounds existential. I have heard a lot of positive things about Durrenmatt. He was a Swiss writer/playwright with an accomplished career. I need read one of his works when I can. Good discussion point! -Josh

Yes! That's a rather perfect way to look at it. :)

We studied The Visit in my English class. It is such a hard moral question of which side was right and where would you stand.

Comedy doesn't refer to making people laugh. Historically, comedy in plays is using common people in the play. The elite find common people (Greek time period) to be comic relief because of their poverty.
