  • Shai Maestro & Chris Potter - In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning (David Mann)
Live at Festival Au Gres du Jazz - La Petite Pierre, France.
    an Arte Concert
"On one side Israeli pianist Shai Maestro, on the other American saxophonist Chris Potter. On one side, a delicately extroverted poet, on the other, a silent one that goes straight to the point. The two artists are gathered at La Petite Pierre for an exclusive concert.
When he was 5 years old, Shai Maestro began playing the piano while listening to Oscar Peterson playing The Gershwin Songbook. "Peterson's touch, the beauty of Gershwin's melodies, and the swing captivated me." His craft, fluid and bright, left a huge mark on Maestro. Far away in Chicago, Chris Potter is already a professional thirteen-year-old sax tenor virtuoso with solid, fleshy sounds reminiscent of Michael Brecker. An outstanding arranger and orchestrator, a sturdy hero of innumerable encounters, he is gradually developing a growing sensitivity. Shai - the poet, delicately extroverted - explores his music at the same time as it delivers in touching hesitations, followed by magnificent flashes, Chris the silent goes straight to the point. These two men respect each other, with a moving modesty. The meeting of these two artists where on paper everything seems to oppose produces a strange and beautiful magic where Chris Potter, as if reassured by the benevolent sitting of Shai Maestro, rounds a statement that remains solid and calibrated. In 2017, the Festival exclusively hosted Shai's piano solo concert at the Lalique Museum for moments of grace, ginned by this lunar Pierrot with a heart wide open. There were wet eyes all over the hall. The recent meeting - equally exclusive - of the two men at Mezzrow Jazz Club in New York led them straight to start to Jerri Hans main square at La Petite Pierre, France."

Even though I am continuously amazed by their rendition of All The Thing You Are, for some reason my heart gravitates toward the patience, depth, and soul that this demonstrated here. Perhaps if I had the turn of phrase of that of a poet, I would describe what this piece means as I listen to it - then perhaps I could more succinctly describe what this rendition means to me. For whomever reads this - I hope you find that piece of music that does the same to you.

I figured out recently that the reason they sound so good together is that they don’t need each other. It’s like marrying a woman that makes as much money or more than you do -changes the relationship because you know she can easily survive without you -it forces you to treat her differently because of an inherent respect. They both know when to leave space, we all know they are monsters so they don’t have to prove themselves with velocity or crazy leaps, they can just focus on making music, which is rare these days. They don’t have huge ego’s to feed and we can hear that. Also they have such technical ability that they don't have to repeat themselves which is my and many people’s problem. They don’t really have “licks” they just play music and they make it sound easy to do. Someday I hope to be able to do that. Thanks guys
