Dear Louise. I have watched this video several times over the last 2 years and at last I have clicked to the importance of cleaning and drying the brush EVERY time, and not adding water onto the paper once it is drying. I guess I wasnt ready to learn this very impotant lesson the first times I watched it. Each time I learn more stuff from your videos. Keep up the most excellent work.
You are a wonderful teacher! I wish I had found your videos months ago. It's one thing for a teacher to tell you to use a damp brush, but it's such a better thing when the teacher tells you why and shows what she means by that. You have addressed many of my frustrations. Thank you so much!
This video is so effective because you keep repeating the information about the amount of water in the brush and on the paper and reminding us not to try to go back into the painting until the paint is completely dry. It is so tempting to just dab here and there and then, as you say, you have a mess! I appreciate your teaching style. Thank you.
I have just discovered your wonderful tutorials Louise, and I'm sad that it took me a couple of years to do so! They are concise, very informational and your style of teaching and thoroughness of your lessons just rings a bell for my learning style! Thank you!
This is by far the best tutorial I have ever seen on blending, Louise - thank you so much for sharing your expertise. Your explanations and demonstrations are super clear and inspired me to to practice! Thank you so much!
Louise, I just wanted to say that I am fairly new to watercolor painting and I was looking for clips on blending. I came across your clips and I have to say they taught me everything I needed to know. I’ve looked at other clips and yours comes out on top every time. I love the way you go through the steps methodically and verbally repeat necessary actions that have to be taken at each stage. You are truly an artist and know your craft. Thanks a million, keep up the great work. Best regards, Dave.
Thank you Louise for this excellent tutorial! I have to say that you have beautiful brushes that seem to do exactly what you want, although you are the professional artist here. Thank you for sharing and I have to practice those techniques over and over.❤Helene
This is the best channel I’ve seen for watercolor tutorials. Your explanations and demonstrations are clear and concise. Perfect for any skill level and especially for beginners like me. Thanks so much!
I did the practices! The hardest one was having the two colors blend on dry paper from opposite sides. Maybe it was the pigments I used because they wouldn’t blend. Note to self , use a separate brush for Diox Purple, Winsor Violet . It doesn’t rinse easily from the brush . I learned a lot from this one and will practice often,
There are so many watercolor tutorials out there!! I keep coming back to you because I love your paintings, and I really appreciate being able to see how you blend your colors. I’m not really a beginner, but I sure feel like one some days. I’ve been using a so-called watercolor journal, struggling, and finally realizing the paper is awful for blending. This afternoon I got out some Arches, and just played. I didn’t create anything amazing, but what a difference. Beginners (and everyone) really need to use quality watercolor paper because so much of the frustration comes from paper that is not cotton! (I know 100% is best, but even *some* cotton makes a difference.) I also buy large sheets, and cut the down. It’s much more economical (as you know)!
I have been practising watercolor for a little while now, but I have to say that your explanations are absolutely outstanding : the video quality is amazing, seeing how you use and move your brush is very helpful, and everything you say is so clear! When you explained wet on wet by saying that the new color you add must be the same amount of "wetness", something clicked in my head... I have literally done wet on wet mostly wrong for months (if not years...) Thank you so much!
Wonderful explanations, Louise. I'm looking forward to trying them. .......And here I thought you are a very serious person! The outtakes are hilarious! You're a great sport for letting us see the real, [im]perfect you. Wishing you well and many thanks.
Louise, I am so thankful to have discovered your channel! This is undoubtedly the clearest, most concise, most comprehensive review of watercolor blending techniques I have EVER encountered. I understand, I can practice, and implement your methods immediately. I am forever grateful to you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and TIME! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!😃😃😃❤️❤️❤️
Dear Louise, I am so glad that I found you! You are a wonderful teacher. Everything you say is so informative, and you say it all so that I feel like you are teaching me intuitively! Thank you so much! 💖
Thank you for showing the "bloopers" at the end. 1) It shows that you are human, 2) You're comfortable showing your vulnerabilities, and 3) Second, Third, or Fourth time's the charm. I also benefitted from learning the techniques you demonstrated. Thanks!
I am a beginner watercolorist so this tutorial was very helpful. Your paintings are stunning! I don’t know what my style will end up being yet so I watch a lot of videos of various styles.
AND I DO AGREE WITH THE PATRON BELOW MY LAST COMMENT~ THIS IS AN EXCELLENT VIDEO, AS THE CAMERA IS RIGHT UP CLOSE, AND YOU HAVE TAKEN YOUR TIME TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING YOU ARE SHOWING AND EXPLAINING THROUGHOUT~ THANK YOU SOOOO VERY MUCH~ INCIDENTALLY I AM FROM WASHINGTON STATE JUST A BIT NORTH OF SEATTLE
Thank You, Louise for this video. As a beginner it helped me SO MUCH to blend my watercolors better. Everything was described in really clear and detailed manner which was perfect for watercolors newbie, me. Subscribed without a doubt, will be following more of Your advices, tips and guides ❤
Thank you so much for the brilliant tip about not taking your water all the way to the edge. I’ve had the problem of a ring of color on the edge, but didn’t know why it was happening. Much appreciated. 🥰
I think this is the issue I've been having...trying to control the water on my brush or the water on the paper. I really enjoyed your tutorial. I think this video will help me out. Thank you Louise!
You get right to the heart of the matter - these are the issues that are particularly difficult in the beginning. Thanks so much; I'm improving because of your focus on the fundamentals of watercolor. And your videos are so well made - a pleasure to watch!
Louise, You're the best teacher I'm e ever known. Thank you for all your content. I've learned everything I know about painting from you. Thank you so very much!
Beautiful lemons! I paint with acrylics and am just getting into watercolor and watercolor pencils. Your tutorials are so helpful, and I love how watercolor is so magical and almost paints itself. Thank you!
😊 Thank you! This video is exactly what I was looking for. I'll do this exercise many times. As a self taught watercolorist who recently picked up my brushes again after a twenty year hiatus, I needed better direction on my shading techniques. I took a local class but the teacher really couldn't teach well. I'll definitely become a patreon. Your gifts for teaching and painting are the best I've found 💕
This is the best blending video I have ever seen. Your detailed descriptions are so very helpful. It’s worth the watch. Thank you for sharing this. By the way, I’m a fan of yours also on Skillshare. 🌺

First time viewer here. Thanks so much for this awesome video! You’re so talented! Your voice is so calming & your explanation/teaching skills are excellent ! I absolutely LOVE the bloopers!! IMO: So often, viewers are exposed to “perfection” on the internet which I believe perpetuates the false narrative that we need be perfect 100% of the time; it’s unrealistic, and most importantly: unnatural… Thank-you for disrupting this narrative by showing the bloopers and for exposing your humanity & humor! You’re most appreciated!
Thank you Louise! A wonderful video about blending that I learned from. I really enjoy your bloopers at the end of each video. Thanks again for sharing.

I love the bloopers - this really humanizes you and so relatable to many of us! LOL Thanks Louise and hello from Toronto, Canada!
Yes!!! The blooopers are the reward for making it to the end of the video
Yes, the bloopers are a stress reliever when I’m feeling helpless. Your instructions are clear so I’m inspired to keep trying.
They’re a perfect addition to your brilliant tutorials
I love the blooper reel! As a fellow video maker I’m so happy to see it’s not just me!

Best blending video I've seen, and easy to repeat the practice exercises. You are so talented as an artist and teacher. Thank you for sharing.
💯 agree

As soon as I saw that lemon throw I knew there would be a blooper; a daring manoeuvre indeed! Rockin' that acid yellow top, Louise!
Me too!
