As a beginning mature age violinist (57), I have been immensely frustrated with most of the tedious lessons available. Fiddlerman gets right to the point and I can learn more in 5 minutes with him than 55 minutes of beginner lessons anywhere else...
+nat michaels Appreciate Video clip! Excuse me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Riddleagan Master Violinist Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for playing violin like a master minus the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
My son is learning the violin in orchestra and I looked this up because they are about to learn their first harmonic. I had no idea what that was and I trying to keep up so I can help him. Thanks for the video!
Omg, i had spend a lot of time trying to discover how to do harmonics by myself and this video made it a lot easier. That's one of the funniest things i have ever done on the violin hahah
Are you referring to the fingered harmonics? In order to play those you must put down the first finger solid and the fourth lightly. Each and every not is played with the first and fourth finger and shifts for every note. :-) Are you working on Czardas?
I don't hate any genre. There are many that I don't know much about though. I like all good music (my taste I guess) regardless of genre and dislike bad music. LOL
What is the difference between how, for example, a G4 is produced normally on a violin, and how a G4 is produced by a harmonic? Is it simply which string you use, or is there a bigger explanation?
Harmonics come from touching the string lightly in divisions. For example if you touch the string lightly in the middle of its' length it will sound a bit like a flute with an octave higher pitch. We can cut it in quarters for a higher pitched 2 octave harmonic. They are quite different from normal notes and harder to achieve.
Hey Fiddlerman, thanks for the informative vid! I have a question for you, please? I was curious about some of the harmonics in Sarasate’s Zapateado Op 2, as they’re represented on the sheet music. In certain parts it shows “notes” consisting of a crotchet, and minim, sharing the same tails, on different notes on the staff, and a smaller crotchet like note, on the same tail, that is several ledger lines above, I assume an octave, or two, above, and I think is like a double stop harmonic, played on two strings, playing two with light pressure for harmonics? If there is such a thing, my knowledge on harmonics, and all the ways to ornament them, etc, is low. Zapateado is my favorite piece ever, and I’m curious about the complex sheet music for it. Thanks for your help, and videos!
I can explain it to you on Fiddlerman.com/forum There you can paste an image of the harmonics in question and I'll explain how to play them. That way we benefit others as well. :) Thanks for watching.
No problem with most fiddles that I play however there is one fiddle violin that false harmonics on the G string doesn't respond very well..Question what G string or strings are more suited to play false harmonics?? Thanks... Shermfiddle
I wouldn't know which ones are more suited but my guess is that the clearer, better, more responsive strings will make it easier. Evah Pirazzi, Vision Solo, Larson Virtuoso, Obligato...... Your guess is as good as mine. :) That is of course if there is a difference. There's always, "Fiddlerman" Synthetic Core Strings. Super affordable and better than Dominant in many ways, IMAO.....
thank you fiddlerman its was nice,, great help to me,,, bdway can i have the opportunity to ask you,, what violin was that it has beautiful sound,,, do u have any use violin to sold out,, which is not too costly,,
That is my personal violin that I have owned for over 25 years. It's a Jan Larsson from Lima, Sweden. He still makes great violins but I'm afraid that the price is more like 25,000 The good thing about hand made violins, even cheaper ones, is that they usually get better the more you play on them and with age. At the time I made this video we did not have a violin shop. What is your budget for a violin?
Ive watched this and came back to it for 20 times already. This video is full packed of info on harmonics very educational. But what bothers me, i cant seem to do it right or my violin cannot do it. When i play harmonics it does a scratchy sound? Do you bow near the bridge when doing harmonics?
i've seen some videos from you now, you mention often, that all kinds of music use vibrato/legato/portamento etc. but you never mention electronical music. could it be, that you hate that genre?
The real truth is that you'll get a Chinese made instrument finished or setup in Germany. Not really a problem but it's the hidden truth. No German maker would ever hand make a violin for that amount of money. The time required to make a violin is about 250 hours and good materials are expensive as well. The Chinese are fast, effective and cheap. We do sell fantastic Chinese violins for around this price. Our Fiddlerman Violins are Chinese made but we could easily have claimed that they are American because they are finished here in the USA. :) We have the Fiddlerman Master violin made at the award winning GCV workshop. fiddlershop.com/fiddlerman-master-violin.html

Thanks so much for that!!!
Very True😊
Thanks Fiddlerman, I've always really enjoyed how concise, informational, and to-the-point your videos are. You exude passion.
Thanks for writing that :)
can you post a video on how harmonics are notated on sheet music? I never have understood it.

www.vsl.co.at/en/Violin/Notation I know it's a really late reply haha but it can help other ppl too. Check this site, I hope it helps!
Thanks i want one too
0:20 "they're used in all genders of music"
Maybe not all. LOL
Genres...?
leave it alone....lets not get the poor guy demonetized or worse for not recognizing all 6549 violin genders,.....pretty touchy climate these days
I am not a violinist but a composer who was curious about harmonics on the violin and your video was very informative. Thank you.
My son is learning the violin in orchestra and I looked this up because they are about to learn their first harmonic. I had no idea what that was and I trying to keep up so I can help him. Thanks for the video!
Terrific clear lively lesson. Thanks!
Thanks Fiddlerman for the great introduction of Harmonics!
Thank you very much for your clear instructions! You are so kind to give us free lessons, and you are a very good teacher! Clear and useful tips!!!
Thanks so much! I'm working on Czardas and needed to learn how to do the finger harmonics. :)
Annalysa C Same!
thanks your lessons are really valuable.Subscribed without second thought
Thank you, Fiddlerman. Can you tell me about your chin rest? I would love to know where to get one like that.

My luthier way back in the day, built it up an additional 1/2 inch though.

I never imagined that a violin can make these sounds! Today I'll try!
Is there a way to do harmonic sounds with the bow? This would be similar to the guitar pinch harmonic idea.
Not without touching the right spot on the fingerboard. At least not that I'm aware of.

your videos are short and super useful, I just love them, Thanks for sharing!.:)
Thanks Sahar, You are so positive. :-) Love your attitude.

Off the subject but what do you do about rosin build up on the strings?
Love it~ Thank you so much!

Yes, those are the fingered harmonics. First and fourth finger all through that section.
Ahh! Excellent video! Thanks!

Antreidez Kneves Some instruments are harder to play harmonics with. You need to be pretty exact to get harmonics though.
bow close to the bridge for these harmonics. Your finger has to be super light and on the exact spot. :-)
Yes it is.
Do you know how to make that sound using rubber bands?
What
I just wipe it off with a cotton cloth. There is however a big discussion about this on my forum at Fiddlerman. com/forum
Cool.
help im playing czardas already but it's hard for me to do the harmonics precisely
It's hard for everyone. :) Just make sure that your solid first finger is solid and your forth finger is lightly touching.
I have my concert in two days and this really helped
Super glad to hear it!
great !! thx a lot ^^
thankyou !
