PRESENTED BY SHAHANA GOSWAMI
Maru Tarang, meaning 'ripples of the desert', is a collaboration between Jeff Lang (slide guitar, electric guitar), Asin Khan Langa (Sindhi sarangi), Bobby Singh (tabla) and Bhungar Khan Manganiyar (khartal). The collaboration evolved out of a residency at Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur in 2011, where musicians were first introduced to each other by producer Divya Bhatia, with the express purpose of developing a collaboration for Jodhpur RIFF.
Jeff Lang is a singer, songwriter and slide guitarist from Australia. He is well known in the Australian roots music scene, having won the ARIA (the Australian Recording Industry Association Music Award) for Best Blues and Roots Album in 2012. Among the instruments he plays are the standard and slide guitars, the mandolin and the electric baglama.
Asin Khan Langa is probably the most proficient master of the rare Sindhi sarangi, a string instrument unique to the Langa community of folk musicians in Rajasthan. He was introduced to music by his father Muse Khan Langa and learnt to play the sarangi from Ustad Lakha Khan, himself a doyen and master of the Sindhi sarangi. Asin has performed and has been honoured extensively in India and overseas.
To form Maru Tarang, Jeff and Asin were joined by Bobby Singh and Bhungar Khan Manganiyar.
Acclaimed tabla player, Bobby Singh, is a student of tabla maestro Aneesh Pradhan. As a child he studied at the Sangeet Mahabharati in Mumbai. He has played alongside musicians such as Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, John Butler and Slava Grigoryan.
Bhungar Khan Manganiyar is one of Rajasthan's best known khartal player's, a wooden percussion instrument usually made of the wood of the sheesham or mango trees.
The music of Maru Tarang is a confluence of two musical traditions that seeks to explore various themes. The collaboration between the four musicans is a treat to watch and listen to.
The collaboration premiered at the 2012 Parramasala Festival in Sydney. Most recently, they played at the Jodhpur RIFF 2013.
