A Great Way to Spend a Rainy Day on The Isle of Man - The Manx Electric Railway...

- Опубліковано 15 вер 2023
- I woke up to heavy rain on my one day on the Isle of Man, but had an idea how I could see much of the island and stay relatively dry. Join me onboard The Manx Electric Railway as we ride the full length of the route from Douglas up to Ramsey. It's not the day I had planned, but that's travel and that's weather, so let's get out there and make the most of it.

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for UA-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

"More interesting than a blue-sky, sunny day..." There speaks a true Scot!
Haha we have to say that!
I’m in a warm house admiring your endurance for the sake of your You Tube members thank you .
A pleasure! Even in weather like this!
You pulled the rabbit outta the hat with this one! The weather forced a change in your plans, but also became incrementally a positive influence. Great work, Steve.
So true - I was almost glad the weather put me in the places it did!
@@steve-marsh Absolutely! There’s a lesson there for the rest of us. Thanks, Steve!
What an absolutely gentle way to see the area. The close in view of the sea on the return journey was gorgeous I can't wait to see it in person Steve. Thanks again for taking us along again.
IMO the Laxey-Ramsey section is a much greater treat than the Snaefell Mountain Railway, though that should be done too@@steve-marsh
Stop adding places to our bucket list!
How lovely to be recognised twice. I bet it made their day!
Haha its on my list too - I need to go back there!
Another great video, Steve. I don't know if you realize it, but your videos are a wonderful way to see faraway people and places -- particularly for those of us who are not able to travel afar. You bring a very personal touch in your narrative and notes in addition to very nicely shot and edited videos. Very much appreciated.
Of course Steve realizes it alright that's why he entertains us in such a professional and most charming way. I have never been to the IOM but when I see the weather in August and what we have lived here in my part of France with temps in the 40s and not a cloud in the sky. It's been very difficult. Thanks as always Steve. It's a Braw Bricht Moonlicht Nicht...The Nicht!!!
And I really appreciate your comment, thank you!
I've lived on the Isle of man for 15 years now, and would never want to live anywhere else. Keep up the good work Steve, see u around 😊
Gorgeous trams and lovely horse - very well cared for and healthy and happy looking in his work, so nice to see.
Yeah, very happy to see they are so well cared for!
Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s my Dad’s factory used to shut down over the summer and we spent 3 weeks in the Isle Of Man every summers. Have lots of happy memories of those days.
Ahh sounds like bliss!!
What a lovely place. I think I could live there, weather and all.
I tend to agree!
Some of my best holiday experiences have been on stormy days like that. Dress wisely and run with it...
So true! Not so easy when you have to film it though :)
I love that you met a follower on the tram. A lovely day despite the weather x
It's always great to meet people on my travels, although I rarely film the encounters
Another great video. I have to confess I am a lover of a coastal storm. As a child I used to love going to Porthcawl, near me, and watching the waves crashing over the seafront. I didn't have to video it though, may have had a different perspective then 😊
I’m totally the same :)
@steve-marsh this video was 1 of the best videos I've watched of yours in a long time. Me and my mum loved it thank you.
Great video thank you
I have never been across the 'Pond', but trams and railways has been a lifelong passion of mine, and the Isle of Man trams are worth a visit, IMO...Thanks Steve, I enjoyed it!
A coastal storm, lol. I live here on this promenade and it’s like this all winter
Thanks for a great video. IOM has definitely moved up my bucket list.
Mate, you MUST go there!!!!
Ah, memories, Beautiful when the weathers good, grim the other 11 months of the year!!
Still miss the place though. 👍👍
I'd love to return on a nice day!
Love this trip with the trams and a GEORGIUS horse❤❤❤❤
He really was a superstar :)
The second part of the Isle of Man video was worth the wait!! Awesome!! 😍😍
Thanks for that :) A slightly shorter part 3 still to come!
@@steve-marsh great!! thank you!
Hi Steve, as a retired tour coach driver it was my pleasure to visit the IOM on 6 occasions and tour the whole of the island including trips up to Snaefell summit. Great memories for me, thank you.
One day I'll get up there!
So good to watch the variety of content in your videos.
Keeps me motivated to try different things for sure :)
You certainly captured the atmosphere aboard the electric tram. It felt like I was aboard too. 🙂
Appreciated - I put lots of clips in for that very reason :)
The Isle of Man looks beautiful. Thanks Steve
Even in this weather! And so friendly too!
What a shame about the weather, although it did add a certain "cosiness" to the video! I loved this, Steve, it was like a trip back to simpler times (in a good way, of course!). Thanks mate. 😊
Totally agree Andy!
Vaguely knowing Ramsey I'd have skipped to the next tram to grab a coffee and cake in one of the wee coffee shops, just to warm up on such a damp day.
Firstwet to the island when I was five years old with my parents brother and sister to see the Manx gp. Visited the island many many times since remember summer!and. But all the exiting things crabbing off the side of the harbour the horse drawn trams the mountain railway top of the Laxey wheel sat on the grass up at the bungalow TT riders passing the place is amazing and beutifull Tony R 80years old

Thanks for sharing Tony!
I wish I'd had time Rob, I was busy thinking of onward connections and the next video!
Steve, I’m not watching this from a warm cosy house, but from a beautiful island in the sun where I live. Seeing you in the wind and rain, and how you are always cheerful and smiling , despite any weather conditions, you obviously enjoy the places you visit and this always comes across in all your videos. Thank you. I did actually visit the Isle of Man many years ago and guess what, it rained!
Haha of course it did! :D
I've heard that the residents of the IOM refer to it as liquid sunshine and continue to love life. The isle is the next place my family and are planning to visit, come rain or shine. Cheers.
I could just imagine Steve's wonderful shock of having a subscriber on the Isle Of Man 😂Great work as always mate despite the awful weather 👍
I met more people on that small island than anywhere! 🤣
@steve-marsh 😂😂 long live the Isle of Man
What a lovely film. Reminds me of what British summers can be like & glad to be watching from sunny Lisbon!
Stunning scenery on that tram, much better for the environment too. You wouldn't have thought you were filming in August, more like Winter. Bet its a rough crossing then. Great vlog Steve.
Oh I'd have loved to catch the ferry again on this stormy day!
The Isle of Man looks very beautiful and I loved seeing it in stormy weather-seeing the power of the waves crashing on the foreshore. Also loved the electric railway
I could watch those seas all day long!
The tram ride was really interesting and looked like fun! The scenery is magnificent. The sea was powerful looking, loved the crashing waves.
Oh I could watch those seas all day!
If the weather isn't too inclement the tram usually has an open carriage at the back. All very old school, no safety rail, so on that rocky outcrop bit north of Laxey you can lean out and look down......
That was a wonderful visit to IOM, thanks for sharing it with us. Riding on that horse-drawn tram would be worth the trip in itself for me. It is a throwback to the days when there were working animals all around us.
Totally agree, it was such a treat!
Beautiful horses, one can see how well they look...
Delightful Isle...
I watch many travel videos, I long to see the world but its no longer an option. I love the ocean, esp in stormy weather. I live in the mountains and I just long for the sea. The trams were great and the horse was dear. I'm definitely a rainy day person, this was just perfect. Of all the videos I've watched, I think this was my favorite ever.
I was hoping we would have tea though!! 😊
Thank you for this, you brightened my week.
I really appreciate that, thank you!
Growing up on the Isle of Man I can certainly say the most comforting sound in the world is the sound of the sea and the wind whistling through the masts of the boats. Feeling quite home sick after this amazing video! :)
Thanks so much for watching some very familiar places :)
You’ve sold me on a winter holiday to the Isle of Man. From the USA
Hi Steve,
Nice wee tram ride from Douglas to Ramsey & Laxey the weather did you no favours first thing in the morning.
The horse drawn tram is really unique, and I suppose a great tourist attraction in good weather.
Douglas looks nice even on stormy days, thanks again for a nice video Steve, all the Best.
Fantastic wee coastal views!
...you seem to evoke the spirit of travel. An open mind and a tight wallet.
Very enjoyable, interesting and informative. 😎🍻
Despite the weather, the Isle of Man seems an absolute gem. A friend goes bike riding there when the bike festival is on but for my taste, the forests and peaceful look of the countryside look very appealing. You convinced me: I shall try to get there one day. Your views of the stormy sea in Douglas are captivating, with the waves flowing backwards, impressive gulls' acrobatics. Thank you for bringing forward the beauty of this bleak day.
Hello Steve mick from Hull another lovely episode hope you are very well look forward to your next episode 😊😊
Cheers Mick mate!
Steve, the unplanned & unexpected resulted in an absolute delight of a video! That was mesmerising. Loved you bumping into the fella that follows you! 😁👍
Cheers Davie! Glad I filmed this one, it was testing not to in this weather!
For small island, there is still a ton of place, views, sites you didn't see ... Proud to call iy my home
Hi Steve Paul from Kent again what a wonderful video keep up the fabulous videos you are making Paul
Cheers Paul! It was tricky to film but so worth it!
I visited in 1998 when my husband was racing in the Manx Grand Prix. That electric railway trip to Laxey - nice memories! And my day was clear enough for the Snaefell Mountain trip. Sorry you missed it. It's a wonderful island to visit.
Thanks for the ferry and tram run. I'm a ferry nerd myself from the US Pacific Northwest and been traveling Europe the past few years more....the Isle of Man seemed like I should be there just for the TT. Your video makes me want to go there to spend a week now off or shoulder season...and comfortable I can get around on public transport easily.
Nice to see the Isle of Man again, I've not been for 40 years! I remember I had a nice week with warm weather exploring by motorbike, steam train, and electric tram including the trip up Snaefell, and this has inspired me to visit again sometime.
Ahhh I could go some of that!
Another great GoPro/Steve masterpiece. You always capture the essence of a place regardless of the weather conditions. The Isle of Man is now, thanks to you, on my go to list.
Is he just using a gopro? quality looks great
Cheers! Well worth a visit! And yes, just a GoPro (and occasional iPhone for the zoom shots)
Another magnificent video. Is there nothing that can defeat you? It certainly looks a great place for a few days break, even when the weather's a bit soggy. The brolly challenge near the beginning reminded me of when I was once at Eastbourne in midsummer and was unable to walk along the prom because of the wind and rain. I had to walk along a road one street back instead, protected by the buildings. Ah, summer.
My poor brolly got a bit mangled, but it was all worthwhile :)
I remember it blowing a houlie in the IOM. A good day to go to the pub or back to bed. The horse drawn trams were a major attraction when I holidayed in the 1970’s. It’s good to see trams still in operation on the island.
I am watching from 36C Cyprus and I am begging for weather like this
As a matter of fact Steve, I was in my shorts & Tee shirt enjoying a lovely cup of tea while watching this one. Thanks for enduring all the miserable weather for our viewing pleasure, YOU'RE A STAR MY MAN. Cheers.
Haha well glad one of us was dry! :D
I’m glad you enjoyed your brief visit. I was especially amused to see you filming the small boats in the inner harbour, because I happen to be watching this from onboard one of them. Not one of the ones in your video. Mine is on the other side near the yacht club, but it did make me chuckle at the coincidence.
Ach I wish I'd videoed the one you're on - that would have been spooky to watch!
Saw this video was up early this morning, but decided to save it for "dessert" after a long day of work. Thank you for such a lovely video. I especially liked the stormy seas. You were brave to face that rain and wind, though.
Thanks :) Oh it was tough, I knew I had to make the video just to break even on the trip, so I had little choice :D
Hi Steve thanks for the second half enjoying watching looks a nice peaceful place
We (myself and son) enjoyed your video of our home, shame about the rain! In the sun the Isle of Man is the best place in the world 🌎
I can believe it!
Fortunate to see this video......never knew "horse" tramway ever existed at all! .....great to see the rickety type coaches with incandescent bulbs of olden days, in this modern era of LED lights....must have been really fascinating for a travel lover..... wonderful vlog 🎉❤
Thanks so much :)
Great video love sea breaking over the prom ,thank you for efforts.
Just love your videos Steve. What a great place the Isle of Man is. Thanks for showing it to us.
A pleasure! Even though I got a bit wet in the process!
I remember the movable seat backs on a train from Madrid to Toledo. What a good idea. I have never been to the I.O.M so thanks Steve for the trip.
I spent a few days there in 2012 and loved every minute of it seeing this video made me so happy, I hope that one day in the not to distant future i shall be able to retire there, thank you again my friend for bringing back so many memories, truly wonderful. Until the next one stay safe and cheers.
AN absolute pleasure Simon!
Spectacular videos good work really enjoying them
Yet another enchanting video. I love the captions you put on and the natural way you present the narration. ❤️
Cheers Michael!
fascinating Island with lots of history
Brilliant video, great scenery, atrocious weather but that's the irish sea for you. Hope all is well, hope tou have a great weekend, take care
Cheers Peter! I was just waiting for that big weather front to creep over The Atlantic towards the island!
That scene with the waves crashing against the sea wall, the returning to crash into the next incoming wave was fascinating. I loved all three of the trams (or, whatever is best to call them) cheers and ATB
Oh Erin I could watch those seas all day long!
We love the fact that you film in all weathers, and give us a genuine appreciation of your destinations, not just the sunny weather!
That said, I love watching rainy day videos. Especially in our blazing Australian summer when the sight of rain is so welcome.
Loved your feel of an island in a storm! I lived on an island in Gulf Islands of B.C. for 38 years but ferries finished me and I returned to the mainland to live but do miss the island!
Hi Steve....
As soon as I saw a tram video...I was hooked !❤❤❤
A tad bit of wild weather....but thanks so much for braving the weather to show us these beautiful old gals , powered by electricity and horse !
Wonderful 😊
It was a joy to ride these old beauties!
Thanks Steve for the video, sorry the weather was a bit rough, you get used to it living here.
Still wonderful despite it!
Steve, we stayed in The IoM mid September 2023 just south Castletown. Great place to visit enjoyed the O'kells beer and a delightful airport. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you, very informative. I realy enjoy your videos. There are some South Africans living on the Isle of man. Now I can see how beautifull other countries and Islands are kept, we use to be like that, not any more. Keep up the good work.❤
IOM just added to my bucket list !!!! Fantastic 🎉❤🎉
Mine too - for a return visit!
Brilliant video...thanks for taking the time to share it with us. I.o.m looks a must for next year.
I love the Mann myself. Ellen Vannin
That is a nice tram ride round the Isle of man and it is nice to see the sea and the old shops and the views are really beautiful place to look round and see thanks
Thanks Elaine! :)
love it what a brilliant way to travel
Enjoyed it all the way from Durham, NC USA!
Loved that one Steve! Seems like a cool place to visit for a few days!
Always fancied taking my big Honda over and spanking it over the mountain but never have!
Great video as always! Thanks for taking me there!👍😊👏👏👏❤️🏴
Oh that would be a blast!
Aye it’s not all sunshine on these adventures but wind and rain made for great viewing anyway. Keep them coming.
Cheers Tim mate!
Lovely vlog Steve, now the hubby wants to go! Really enjoy your choice of accompaning music 👍
After watching this video i decided to go to isle of man myself !! It looks fantastic.
Your video's are such an inspiration ❤
Another lovely journey.😎Thanks.
You were right. This was a VERY interesting video. We sat in our comfy chairs here in the US and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Everything was so enchanting to us. When we watch your videos we usually try to imagine what every day life is like in those places. Despite constantly being at odds with the elements, The Isle of Man seems surprisingly relaxing. Thanks for this and all of your videos! 😊
Thanks so much guys! I was so impressed with the Isle of Man, in fact, I want to go back already!
I'm manx and I can tell you better weather than UK yh we get bad days but we have nicer summers and milder winters but 80 something% of the island is nature lots of glens very friendly people who will go out of their way to help total strangers very nice place. We have 0 homeless people as being homeless is against the law it's not a crime but if you find yourself without a place to live then by law the police or other services have to provide accommodation even if it's a hotel till you can they can find you somewhere permanent
What wonderful footage of the wild sea! Thank you for risking life and GoPro for your channel. I always like to see the ocean and lighthouses. Good job!
Haha I could stand and watch that sea all day!
wow that is like riding a museum. That is insane
Now that was lovely! 🤗 Those trams look like pubs on wheels, very pretty! I guess they are forgiven the clack of comfiness for their charme! Defintely another place I'd love to see myself! 🤩
Thanks for showing us around, Mate! 🙏🤗
Haha great description of the trams!
Still a lovely video to watch on UA-cam thanks butt .Colin from Cardiff
What a lovely place to visit Steve, shame about the weather down below but when you went up on the tram it looked beautiful; loved the scenic shots. The horses were lovely, there's something so nice about 'the good ole days' and their transport methods back then. Thank you for letting us come along with you 🥰
So cool it's still a normal part of life over there!
Wish it was here too Steve. I love looking back at how things used to be in my parents' time. My dad had a horse and cart, happy days @@steve-marsh
Great video and commentary! Loved the music with ocean at end, truly dramatic! Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks :)
Sigh. Why do you keep adding places I need to go to my list? Why, Steve? WHY? Seriously, another great video. THanks!
Haha it's on my list too - for a return visit!
The electric railway is great, was my favourite of all the heritage lines on the IoM.
I bet the driver loved they decided to use the open cabbed tram in that weather!
Haha yes! A sure way to keep the drivers awake :)
What a gorgeous place! Thanks for the tour Steve.
The waves splashing up against the sea wall. Greatest show on earth.
Well done Steve!
Again you make the most of adverse conditions with some straightforward and interesting footage.
Real people real weather and real transport!
Thank you so much 😊 👍
An absolute pleasure! Even in this weather!
Love from Ireland I love d windy videos 🙀
I love the trams. I lived on the island for 17 years, wish I still did.
Incredible place eh!
Wow the country was beautiful as you passed by. The tram was amazing and a beautiful horse too. I would love to visit here….thank you 😊
It was a. wonderful day despite the dampness!
Many thanks for an excellent report on The Isle of Man. Loved the scenery, and the interaction with the locals mate. looking forward to the next post.
Such an interesting video. Thank you for the hard work and great attitude.
A pleasure!
Charming. How about you make a small series about places that are absolutely terrible 😀?
I rarely find any!
Totally agree with you. Overcast days are better for filming. Of course, wind and rain are spoilers, but where's the fun without them. Yes, I watched your video from the warm comfort of my home with a cold beer in one hand and a fistful of peanuts in the other. Thanks for the wonderful tour of the Isle of Man.
Haha glad one of us is dry!
Good video enjoyed this very much, loved the trams,Beautiful Horse ,
He was a star :)
