    I appreciate the Daniels' decision to reverse the roles, it's great seeing a male character who is loving, fun-loving, gentle, and can kick-ass, whether it's with a bumbag or with kindness. Ordinarily dad/husband characters are portrayed as either the muscular action hero or the buffoon, it's nice seeing a regular dad and husband onscreen for once. In my eyes Waymond Wong is right up there with Aragorn in depicting positive masculinity.

    • @aegresen
      @aegresen 2 роки тому +64

      It has that Ghibli vibe, Waymond reminded me of the father from My Neighbour Totoro, just a good natured man who loves his family; this vibe was repeated in Turning Red as well, which is awesome especially since both films are about Asian families and their struggle.

    • @brantkim
      @brantkim 2 роки тому +36

      The reversal of roles is becoming more and more common in entertainment. We see it in Star Wars, the MCU and others. The main difference in this movie is that they show the reasons why each character is the way they are. Waymond isn't a bumbling, weak, but loving character because he is a man it is because he chooses to be. Evelyn's strength comes from her past of disappointments and her strength in the "normal" world is actually the main reason why her family is having issues.

      @@brantkim The different is in this movie, it doesn't feel 'force' since most of Asian woman(or mother) is always been this way with strict and stress personality. Glad that they fleshed out this topic and make the movie about this, it's really a great reminder and good ways to see the world especially for my mom and dad.

    As a Singaporean Chinese, and as one who's fluent (enough) in Mandarin Chinese (henceforth referred to as just 'Chinese', just because that's how we refer to it as), his acting is pure gold.
    Waymond's Chinese depends on the universe he's in. In the "prime" universe and related universes, he emotes in a very American, English-speaking way. However, when we see CEO Waymond, his Chinese is more "right". He deserves an Oscar for everything he did for this film. And frankly, we don't deserve an actor like him. He is brilliant, he is full of heart, but most importantly, he is genuine.

      I don't understand Chinese, so I love hearing about the nuances in the Chinese language dialogue. Ke mentioned in an interview that he didn't like the translation of his lines and asked his wife, Echo, to re-translate it. She did such a good job, Michelle Yeoh asked if Echo could translate her lines as well. The Daniels ended up asking her to be the on-set translator- yielding Echo Quan her first Hollywood job since moving to LA after several years of searching, even though she had worked for Wong kar wei in Hong Kong (which is how she & Ke met).
      So much love and care was poured into this movie!

    He was a revelation in the movie. So good. I especially liked his and Michelle Yeoh's sequences in Hong Kong which evoked so much Wong Kar-Wai with the shots. Simply amazing.

    What an amazing journey he has had. I'll be looking forward to seeing him on the big screen again. One side note, in another interview he talked about the lasting Gooney relationships saying 'Chunk' is now his attorney which caused me to muse, I bet his closing arguments go on forever!

    Ke Quan can do comedy, he can do action fight scenes, drama, I hope we'll see a lot more of him in years to come and this wasn't another flash in the pan so to speak. He deserves it!

    Loved him growing up as a kid. Goonies is my favorite movie of all-time and watching Ke in it made me feel represented and seen! I've been waiting to see what he would do next and didn't realize his struggle as an actor. So happy for him! I hope this movie catapults him and provides him more roles.

    he was the emotional heart of this movie. when the fast paced sensory overload was sweeping me away, waymond’s scenes brought it all back into perspective. incredible performance.

    An old co-worker used to have a picture of Short-round riding an elephant on his cubicle. When I asked him about it he said he had auditioned for the part when he was a kid lol.
    Part of X-Men was also filmed in my neighbourhood. It was the scene where Sabertooth ambushes Wolverine and Rogue.
