And teams like Rebellion seemed content to be "best of the rest". 3:54, yes the engine was a total shit show, but not for the reasons described. 1) Of course it's going to be longer than a V8, and this isn't a real issue. The car is 5 metres long on it's own, there's going to be some dead space in the monocoque. 2) An inline engine package was chosen over a V engine, since it would allow them to run a very low drag car concept. 3) The lack of capcity is not an inherent issue. Highly boosted turbo engines can last for 24 hours and Aston never suffered a failure in the head. Which indicates there was never an issue with the engine blocks flexing. 4) The steel bars for a non stress engine design are super common. The 787B had similar structures, although I believe those were done in titanium. Also the weight of those bars would not be sufficient to "upset" the balance of the car. It's not ideal, but the car would be required to be loaded with ballast to get the weight were it is wanted. 5) It seems that the reason the power was so low, is that the team got scared after the first engine failed and were unsure of the cause, so they elected to detune the engines just in case. The engine failure was caused by the coating on the cylinder walls. Finally the most damning reason why the engine was a failure is shown how after quali for Spa, cracks in the aluminium alternator pullies were found. And when steel replacements were fitted, it just moved the cracking issue to a drive pully. This shows that the engine was probably suffering an issue with harmonics in the crankshaft. Even after they fixed the liners, the engine was constantly trying to kill itself.

The multiple oversights/failures on a factory backed car is amazing. By the 2010's most teams, esp factory backed teams have long since figured out reliability issues. So being down a minimum of 100hp for the sake of running 24hrs is a terrible strategy. While it is certainly possible to engineer a straight 6 that is load bearing, but it requires time and resources. Being down on power, extra weight high in the car, questionable aero choices, and poor reliability isn't a winning formula in any race, much less a 24hr race at La Sarthe.

Standing at the ford chicane on the roof of the karting building. That V12 was so loud that even from a distance of 200 meter it hurt. That car looked so beautiful and sounded like what F1 should sound like.
In terms of performance, the worst LMP1 seen at Le Mans that actually made it to the start of the race was the Lola B2K/10 powered by a diesel Caterpillar V10 (in fact a block coming from the VW Touareg iirc). It was in 2004 and if my memory serves well, its fastest lap was a 4'10 when the fastest P1 were around 3'30 or 3'35

I remember that accident when McNish crashed into that Ferrari, it made me so angry... McNish was a reckless driver, always taking unnecessary risks, in that occasion he destroyed the Ferrari's chances of winning the GT class, and almost killed himself in the process. And why? To gain 0.1s by overtaking the GT car half a corner earlier? In a 24-hr race? Not the smartest guy.
I was raised by my grandfather, who is... was a massive racing fan, Le Mans in particular, every year he'd stay up to watch the full 24h so it was baked in right from the start for me to become a fan. We had initially planed to go to the 2009 Le Mans but my grandmother had gotten sick that year with breast cancer, we ended up taking care of her of course. So we got tickets for the 2011 Le Mans, now I hate to thank someone for getting sick, especially my grandmother, but it was a blessing in disguise for sure! I was 16 at the time and it was the best experience I have ever ever had, sore feet, blisters and severely exhausted after the weekend, but it was AMAZING!
That’s an incredible story! Terribly sorry that you had to go through that with your grandmother. My grandfather was responsible for introducing me to sports car racing as well. I went to my first American Le Mans Series race in 2008, and 2011 Le Mans was the first LM24 that I truly remember being heavily invested in. I would’ve done many things to be able to go back in time and attend that race myself. Thanks for that one!
Hit like as soon as I heard that LeMans 2011 was the all time favourite motor-race; still the best LeMans I've ever seen, those 13 seconds of advantage at the end after the last Audi pit stop felt like they were neck and neck. I remember being quite intrigued by the AMR One, especially after that video by Bozzy with the amazing sound of its petrol engine, and then, just after the start, we got that absolute damp squib; luckily we still had the glorious sound of the C6R to enjoy for the rest of the race. Was a disappointment, but then again, I miss this kind of against-all-odds challenges such as the AMR One, the Deltawing or the GTR (even if we did have ByKolles stubbornly getting in just to record a bunch of early retirements in the last few years)
I definitely hope we’ll see a return to the Audi - Peugeot battle in 2023 with the addition of Porsche, Ferrari, Toyota, and more! I’m slightly skeptical about the balancing of LMH and LMDh cars in a proper race setting, but I hope I’ll be proved wrong. We were robbed of the hybrid war at the end of 2016 when it was at its peak, so I’d say sports car racing fans deserve the battle of a lifetime in a couple years.
@@GTRain Agreed about the balancing of LMH and LMDh, we've seen how that played out when the plan was to balance hybrid and non-hybrid LMP1; the only reason why I'm still a bit hopeful is because some big names such as Porsche decided to choose LMDh. As as aside, I really hope that GM will enter as well, even if that might unfortunately mean the end of the Corvette program in the GT class. Regarding underdogs, one team to keep an eye on is Glickenhaus: no big hopes for a result, but I'd be quite happy to see them finishing the race and be classified
For me it was the 2008 Petit Le Mans, when my beloved Ron Mathis engineered the winning car. Two laps down at the start and Alan McNish finishing the race in a battle with Peugeot.
2011 was my first ever Le Mans race and I was standing just to the left of the Alan McNish crash and I loved seeing the Lola Aston in 2010 at Silverstone
Attended 2009 12hr Sebring, and those astons were a sound to behold. Livery was excellent as well. One thing: im not 100% sure, but i think you equated the deltawing and the nissan deltawing ripoff as the same car. Those were two different cars, and the subjects of some acrimony.
This car gets an unfair rep. It knew it wasn't ready, it was suppose to be developed over several years. It just got killed by bad PR. The Nissan, which promised to win in the first year, was much worse for that reason. The 6 Hour race it debuted in was said to be an abbreviated test session in the first place.
A poor development timeframe killed both programs, unfortunately. Neither one was really able to put in the amount of R&D necessary to make a successful program before the funding was pulled.
@@GTRain For sure, I just think the Nissan is much more deserving of the worst lmp1 badge because they straight up claimed that car was going to win. Aston viewed their effort as a 3 year gradual development.
Open cockpit LMP1 cars look kinda silly imo. Something about the size of the body compared to the tiny driver and the fact that he's off to the side rather than central. On an F1 car it looks ok because the chassis is narrow. It would look incredible as a closed cockpit car. Just looking at it again I think the roll hoops are the biggest eye sore on that car.
@@xeigen2 I agree. Almost all of the most iconic Le Mans prototypes (Porsche 917, Ferrari 512, Porsche 956/962, Jaguar XJR-9 etc) were closed cockpit cars.

Love this content usually videos like these are about f1, keep it up! Also I wish there was some more radical designs like the delta wing but it seems unlikely now unfortunately
It was a great race. I miss the larger LMP field with lots of variety of design. My favorite LMP was the Panoz. Big screaming v-8 in front of the driver. Not the greatest race machine by any means but you SURE knew when they were coming. I always found the delta wing to be the most hideous looking car to ever make a circuit of any track and it makes poetic sense that it would be made of the worst LMP car.
They were knocking engines together in the back of the garage out of salvaged bits from other dead motors to make to morning warm up, it’s not surprise they only lasted 4 laps
Such a shame. Really liked the content on this channel. You need to post more essay type videos. Even if you're only getting 4 or 5 thousand views, eventually your stuff will catch on. Once the quality is there.
Are we talking about lmp1 or lower classes? The beginning was off based on I closed results of gp classes which are included in the race but not with them in podium finishes.
The AMR-One was basically entered way too soon into Le Mans. It just didn't have the development necessary to race there or at any other endurance race.
They failed even harder this year. They built the car and didn't even compete, cause they couldn't get it up to spec due to resources being thrown at F1 (we all know how that went)
Massive, monumental flop, even more embarasing if you consider how good the much more cost effective Lola V12 powered one was. Talking about the Pescarolo take on that design, Manu Collard elected it the worst car he ever raced, stating that it had no downforce at all.
pretty good video, kind of shocked that you only have 4450 subs I hope you will make more videos similar to this one, it's super interesting and informative for someone who isn't really into endurance racing [except for his home 24h race at nürburgring ofc :) ]
AFAIK an Inline-6 engine isn't wrong if you take a look at BMW with their trademark I-6 engines, their first V12 the M70 was basically built out of two M20B25 engines. But for high-performance a V6 or a boxer-6 (like 9ff or Ruf Porsches) is often the better solution. Reminds me to the Audi Avus quattro concept it had a W12 and I mean a real W engine like the Napier Lion, disastrous, they couldn't rev it beyond 6000 rpm...
Damn. I really wanted the hypercar class to work and have the Valkyrie run but for some reason things don't look good at the moment for WEC top tier...I hope this year changes
They have completely screwed up the whole class structure from top to bottom due to how slow the LMH cars are turning out to be. We'll see how it works out in actual races, but so far it doesn't seem too good.
Was this thing really worse than the Chrysler lmp900 car? Or the Panoz w/the 4.0L V8, not the Esperante or GT1 or "batmobile" lmp1... I'm talking about the mid 2000s version with the 2 round nostrils. I forget what Panoz called it... But that thing was terrible.
I just now, after a few years of hearing it, realized that the "Sharoos" is Charouz, being used to the Czech pronunciation I always assumed Sharoos is some mystery team I have no clue about, oh God I feel stupid.
I guess you've never had the pleasure of changing a fuel bladder in a Creation CA06H Hybrid... or any Zytek/Reynard sharing the same design. I hate that car.
Here's an idea for you: The 5 worst cars to win Le Mans! I know motorracing doesn't really have a unified idea of what a "good" car is, as Corvette has proven several times that they don't mind being slower than the other GT cars, as long as they stay out of trouble and have bulletproof reliability. But once in a while, a car comes along where it looks to be the slowest in the class, or has so many problems during tests and qualifying that you just can't see them winning... And then somehow, they end up pulling off a sensational win! A few good ones would be the Joest Porsche winning against 3 different factory teams from Mclaren, BMW and Porsche in 1997, where only 17 cars survived the race. The car was extremely slow compared to the rest of the class, but ended up beating them all, as the big teams faultered in front of them, and they won by a lap! The 1995 Mclaren F1 win is also pretty remarkable, as it wasn't even the "serious" entry by the mark, and they had other much more serious entries in the race. The winning car was slow compared to the prototypes, and it's gearbox had proven to be very fragile in high stress races, so the team was always concerned if it could take the strain of Le Mans. However, the combination of a bunch of rain that slowed the cars down and saved the fragile gearbox and the incredible effort by especially J.J Lehto during the harsh conditions, meant that the car won by a lap! The chief engineer also figured out the problem with the gearbox because of the other Mclarens having problems, so they filled the exposed parts of the gearbox with WD-40 at every pitstop, to stop water and muck getting into the gearbox!
Still, could be worse. In 1964, when Ford entered Le Mans for the first time, the GT40 was fishtailing on mulsane, and retired 4 hours after the race started. AMR's car at least wasn't unsafe

Great video. What about when Cadillac tried to go Lemans racing a few years ago, when they had night vision, and thought that was a big deal.
When the UA-cam Algorithm finally give you a really great video about motorsport
Awesome video, good editing and storytelling!!
This vid was flawless.Thank you really much this is the kind of content which yt doesn’t have enough of
Production quality is amazing, definitely earned a subscription from me.
I love that you chose “Afterburner” by Amphobious for the background music. I like that song so much 😍😍😍😍😍😍
The 2009 AMR/Lola LMP1 was absolutely gorgeous
I don't even remember this thing. Although I guess its probably for the best
I helped build the thing, Wish I could forget lol
being 20 sec per lap slower than the top times, I wouldn t even bring the car to the start...shame.
The AMR-One was an outrageous & courageous design that would have worked if they hand attempted this impossible feat in 2 years and not one...
It would have worked with another engine type..
The worst lmp1 car probably, but I have to say it is a pretty looking thing in that gulf livery, imo
They really ran an LMP1 but with LMP2 power against other LMP1’s lol
Great video essay, got a new subscriber.
Please keep doing stuff like this!
I just don't understand why they went away from a V engine, there must have been some reason???
Attended 2009 12hr Sebring, and those astons were a sound to behold. Livery was excellent as well. One thing: im not 100% sure, but i think you equated the deltawing and the nissan deltawing ripoff as the same car. Those were two different cars, and the subjects of some acrimony.
the way this man seemingly says, Peugeot however he wants, angers my inner french man
This car gets an unfair rep.
Prodrive/AMR's experiment of using races as test sessions probably didn't make sponsors happy.
its so sad because that car was pure beauty
I came here to say exactly that!
Most of this info (and even some of the photos) is lifted directly from a Reddit post from a year ago: www.reddit.com/r/wec/comments/fpk6lt/forgotten_racecars_aston_martin_amrone/?
I was there ! First time I went to a race, and let me tell you that those GT cars are loud as hell.
Edit : typo
You need to hear the old V10 F1 cars. You can feel the shifts in your bones
Love this content usually videos like these are about f1, keep it up! Also I wish there was some more radical designs like the delta wing but it seems unlikely now unfortunately
Succeeding one of the most beautiful and best sounding LMP cars of all time, this was a colossal failure..
Who's here after Aston Martin announced their LMH program today?
Great content man! It was about time someone make le mans/sportscar related videos. Just suscribed. Loved it.
I sure hope the Glickenhaus does better, but with their entry for Spa already cancelled, I'm not very confident.
It's good that Glickenhaus cancelled the debut, gives them more time to solve any problems and issues incase any are present.
worst part for me was that this car wore the gulf livery...
Ayee didnt expect to hear my favorite prototype in this video!
Im talking about the deltawing of course!
Is Aston Martin really is that cursed??
i mean in F1 they looks like a very promising midfield team but in reality theyre terrible
Being successful in F1 is really hard, almost impossible nowadays. Many of world leading manufacturers stumbled upon this task.
@@hyts0404 although they got spare parts from racing point yet they are outside of top 10
@@hyts0404 Ferrari's strategic decisions are a meme because they're their own worst enemy
Aston Martin hopes of winning Le Mans is out the window? The bloody car doesn't have a roof and doors to mount windows 🤣🤣
wait there was something worse than the Nissan LMP1?
It was a great race. I miss the larger LMP field with lots of variety of design.
My favorite LMP was the Panoz. Big screaming v-8 in front of the driver. Not the greatest race machine by any means but you SURE knew when they were coming.
I always found the delta wing to be the most hideous looking car to ever make a circuit of any track and it makes poetic sense that it would be made of the worst LMP car.
ACO: Hey youre allowed to use cool engines
Aston Martin: Naaah lets use a bad truck motor wich has no reliability and no power!
Nice video, something I did not know about Le Mans, thank you, you have gained a subscriber
Bruh how are you gonna rock a sick Gulf livery, sound like an F1, and then still make a shit car?!
The driver that took out the deltawing has negative awareness... how could he not see such a cool car and smash it off the road like that?
If it can fit a straight six I'd like to imagine someone 2j swapping it
might be more reliable...
One of them became the Delta wing! Wow, I never would have guessed.
Are we talking about lmp1 or lower classes? The beginning was off based on I closed results of gp classes which are included in the race but not with them in podium finishes.
I closed? or 1 closed?
@@LukSter18998 bro this was a year ago. Not sure anymore what my reference was. I'm not watching it again today sorry sir.
The AMR-One was basically entered way too soon into Le Mans. It just didn't have the development necessary to race there or at any other endurance race.
7:12 How is the DBR1-2 B09/60 car still competing in 2011 season?
Perhaps it was not over for the B09/60
They failed even harder this year. They built the car and didn't even compete, cause they couldn't get it up to spec due to resources being thrown at F1 (we all know how that went)
Never go cheap, unless you know what you're doing. 😌
And if you know what you're doing, don't go cheap 😂😂
Massive, monumental flop, even more embarasing if you consider how good the much more cost effective Lola V12 powered one was. Talking about the Pescarolo take on that design, Manu Collard elected it the worst car he ever raced, stating that it had no downforce at all.
pretty good video, kind of shocked that you only have 4450 subs
I hope you will make more videos similar to this one, it's super interesting and informative for someone who isn't really into endurance racing [except for his home 24h race at nürburgring ofc :) ]
One of my next videos will be about the 24 Hours of Nürburgring!
Great video man, to the point.. and easy to follow, some great footage too👊🏼
Nice video, popped up out of nowhere! good work!
great video. i had no idea it became the deltawing.
Believe it was the high vibration caused by the harmonics of the crank, which was the main culprit to its failure.
I just now, after a few years of hearing it, realized that the "Sharoos" is Charouz, being used to the Czech pronunciation I always assumed Sharoos is some mystery team I have no clue about, oh God I feel stupid.
How did the Lister LMP1 do relatively to the AMR1?
This was the first year I was at Le Mans. What a race.
2:52 yes all Peugeot's did retire but still, I mean it ran for 24 hours straight.
wait a 2 L I6 sounds like THAT?? forget putting LS engines into stuff, I'll take TWO of those please.
It took some doing to be worse than the Nissan GTR LM but by golly, they did it!
I love the Peugeot 908 HDI it’s great around Le Mans, and Spa as well, the Audi R18 Ultra is pretty decent
ByKolles: Challenge accepted!
Wow, I even forgot about that strange car.
Calculations appreciated
I got an Aston Martin ad before thia
I had no clue this car had anything to do with the Deltawing...
Still, could be worse. In 1964, when Ford entered Le Mans for the first time, the GT40 was fishtailing on mulsane, and retired 4 hours after the race started. AMR's car at least wasn't unsafe
