I remember several games in the 1970s when OU didn't throw a pass the entire game, we just lined up and said "Here comes the option. Try to stop it if you can."
The 1975 team was my all-time favorite in 48 years watching OU. Not as great on defense as the 1974 team but still a great defense. Steve Davis, Joe Washington, Tinker Owens, Terry Webb. What a great time to be a kid growing up in Oklahoma.
All the seventies Sooners teams were great and fun to watch. My favorite team was the 1971 team. Joe Wylie and Jon Harrison were clipped on the Rodgers punt return for a TD but the officials swallowed their whistles although they were right there. Steve Davis might be the most underrated wishbone quarterback. He was undefeated. My brother played with Mike Vaughan’s brother at Tulsa University.

Two teams used to imposing their will with simple plays see a team from another conference that takes the game as seriously ($) as they do. Leach is a freshman here. Tried to throw every ball hard enough to get it outside the stadium. Completed 33 percent of his passes that season. Eventually got up to about 50 percent later in his career.
I think this was the last college game played on the astro turf in this stadium. Super Bowl X, played several weeks later, was the final pro game played on this turf before they went back to grass.

Alabama was as good as OU in 1975. We lost our first game to Missouri by 13 and OU lost to Kansas by 20. Would have been a great match-up; #2 OU and #3 Alabama were both 10-1, while Mich was 8-1-2 going into the game. But the Orange Bowl wanted an average Mich team for the TV exposure simply because it was the first time the BigTen had played in any post season game other than in Pasadena.
Michigan didn't even complete a pass until under a minute left. Was less impressed with both teams than I was 49 years ago. He should’ve checked down a whole bunch more. Checking down might not have even been a thing back then, I guess.
