  • Hercules lifts the rock and rescues the boys, unaware that they are Pain and Panic in disguise, and unwittingly releases the Hydra. Much to Hades's chagrin, Hercules defeats the monster and becomes a celebrated hero.

And why does Hercules, instead of cutting off the heads, stab the heart of the Lernaean hydra so that it dies quickly?

@@M1GarandMan3005, it's because Hercules isn't smart. He's a good guy, but mythology portrayed him as dumb. Meg makes him wiser in this movie.

Because it's easier said than done ? That thing's torso is as thick and armor plated as giant lizards get and to even close to the torso you need to get pass the bitey heads. By comparaison the necks ae thinner and kind of, y'know, stick out so they're kind of the obvious targets.
(Also in the original mythology, for those wondering, the hydra is a mostly aquatic serpent, meaning it's body is mostly underwater in a dark murky swamp. ... Though it alway made the "solution" of cauterizing the necks wound with fire before new heads can regrow alway sounds a bit weird if it was such a humid swamp but y'know... myths are all about symbols and narratives, not logic)

Much as I generaly dislike that movie, I hvae to hand it to the animators, their design for the hydra was genius: just the right amount of monstruous menace yet cartoony as to not loo out of place.

Nah, it's jsut how the Lernean hydra works in most depictions of the classic Hercules myth (wel ost late depection fo the myth, int he first, it jsut had many head and a deadly venommous blood), where Hades wasn't "the villain", and no gods in general had nothing to do with this.

Let me see if I got this right. To keep the monster's heads from growing back, did Hercules set the stumps ablaze with a torch?
