Dash's little laugh when he realises he's so fast he can run on water is so pure It's like these kids have been holding back their powers all their life and now can push themselves to the best of their abilities
It's also because of the suits. Take Violet, for example. In normal clothes, only her body disappears. Her supersuit disappears with her when she's wearing it.
This is the first time Dash really gets to let loose with his powers, and I love that the movie shows he doesn't know the full range of his abilities yet either. He's so excited earlier in the movie when his Mom tells him to run as fast as he can if he's in trouble, and when he finally gets that chance, he's too fast for his own good at times, like running into the bugs or tripping, and not knowing he's fast enough to run on water. He's not doing hairpin turns at Mach 5, or knowing exactly how to run on water, even forgetting about it until he drops into the water because he finally slows down. This movie is still probably the best realization of super speed in superhero movie, even 20 years later.

I really enjoy that, despite their powers, neither of them have some bs super strength too. Dash's punches hardly do anything to a full grown man and violet can't incapacitate the guard even when she hits him over the head. They may be superheroes, but they still have the strength of children
That was, in my opinion, what makes this one of the best superhero movies ever made. Not one character ever has the capability to pull a random convenient power out of their ass like you'll see in almost ever Superhero movie; instead they all have a specific set of powers and nothing more, (except maybe for JackJack), and each one has to use them in creative ways to find a solution to the problem they're facing. This movie did such a good job at that; instead of relying on hidden powers or discovering new abilities, they are stuck to what they have to use in whichever way they can think of.
But the way dash makes up for his lack of strength is brilliant as well, by using his speed to throw hundreds of punches at a time he can take out someone bigger than him
@@cornellmburke49which points to earlier in the movie when flash talks about how boring class is. To him things happen way too slow making hours on a chair feel like days
My favorite part of this scene is that it reveals that Dash’s reflexive danger response is actually freeze, not fight or the more expected flight. There are several moments in the chase where you can see he freezes up when he doesn’t know what to do. Right off the bat, Violet needs to goad Dash into running for it. The poor kid has no idea what to do, he’s still processing his automatic response so it takes a second for his brain to kick in. At 2:13, Dash realizes he can punch super fast and goes absolutely ham on the henchman, you can tell he feels like he’s actually in a superhero show and he’s having a blast. Then, at 2:20, he knocks the goon’s visor off, and gets a proper look at his face, and then at the cliff behind the vehicle rapidly approaching. That look of horror is just perfect; the humanization of the soldier suddenly brings him back to Earth, and Dash doesn’t keep up the onslaught, unable to reflexively react. He freezes again! He could have easily kept going, but the visor being knocked off really sent it home that this situation was not a game, and he was actually beating the crap out of a real human being who was about to run into a cliff. That moment of empathy and emotional shock was all it took for the soldier, who has obviously been trained out of any kind of empathetic reaction, to get the upper hand. And of course, when completely out of options in the water tunnel, he reflexively freezes, sinking into the water and barely escaping death. Such an interesting way to show characterization! This movie is so unbelievably good, it’s a shame media like it is so rare nowadays.
I was hoping someone else would notice this. Breaking the water tension by finally going slow enough at the last second, learning that his speed allows him to evade pretty much any attack, ; and Violet being a great leader and strategist, using the time the guards are distracted by her brother running away to turn invisible, and helping him past his freeze.
I’d say he was just reacting to the cliff itself. He kept smiling even after the mask was off, and didn’t look back to the person after seeing the cliff. Completely agree with the rest though.

So, tip for anyone who’s interested in writing speedsters, these scenes are the peak of realizing the ability on film. Dash isn’t disappearing into a streak of energy, he’s a brightly colored object moving at incredible speeds, and the camera is moving with him so the audience can run with him. He’s not able to react to everything, as the moments where he does get hit or caught off guard do help indicate. And, for those of you who watched The Flash movie, Dash isn’t sliding around unnaturally, he’s BOOKING IT everywhere he goes, superhuman not supernatural. It also helps that there’s a degree of physics applied to everything he does. He gains more speed the longer he runs, he’s able to run on water because he’s moving to too fast to sink, he runs around walls, that sorta thing.
What I always appreciate is that this is the first time he really gets to let loose with his powers, and you can see that. He's making mistakes, tripping, not knowing what he is capable of. It always bugs me in movies/shows with super speed that the character can just stop on a dime or pull off hairpin turns at mach speeds. I know it's part of the suspension of belief, but still. Stopping in an instant at those kinds of speeds should send them flying into walls, not just a quick breath and then they can continue a conversation. It's amazing that this movie is turning 20 this year and still the best realization of super speed in a superhero media. I'd argue the closest to this in realizing it would be My Hero Academia, where their speedster has some pretty sensible limitations to how he uses his powers.

i love it how dash as the younger brother manages to take out 6 guards including their vehicles while violet struggles to take out a single guard without his vehicle.
Violet is just getting used to using her powers at full force and her powers are easier to keep secret, while Dash has to take more steps to hide his powers, he was just unleashing all of that built up potential, plus I think violet was just so used to hiding that it was her first thought
At that point Vi only really knew how to use invisibility, and even while invisible, she’s still just a middle school girl fight a grown man with a gun
Dash was the kind of person that was inspired by his powers, proud of them, feeling special, it was easy for him to reach his full potential and act like a superheroe; meanwhile Violet was shy and scared of them, wanting to feel normal, rejecting it; so is reasonable that she wasn't able to defeat one guard, sure she even use his full force

Tbh although the full body force field activation makes sense - I kept thinking for years Dash was surprised at her literally floating in mid air and still being able to create a full body force field rather than standing upright and shooting a force field from her hand or turn herself invisible

I spoke with some people who worked on The Incredibles when I toured the Pixar buildings. (I was speaking a whole different language with them than English because we all spoke cinematic!) It was important for the audience to know that dash always wanted the opportunity to freely use his powers, and with the grunts, he got his chance but it was never what he truly expected. Getting slapped in the face by bugs, tripping on Roots, and blindly navigating a claustrophobic jungle. There were also several different breaks in the color schemes from dark greens to the Badlands red where we get to see- begin to recover and pick up momentum, to when he was sewing through the air with whites. It was important for the audience to take breathers like this, so that way our attention spans stayed focused on him in the action. And like everybody else, I loved the running on water sequence.

When morning came, Violet was still fast asleep and didn’t stir when Dash awoke and jumped back, her body heavy with weariness. She lay curled on her side, her head resting on her bent arm. When you get older you realize now that Dash was able to run on water because the molecules of the water weren’t separating fast enough each time his foot hit so it made the water almost like a solid ground and when he stood in place. The molecules were able to separate which caused him to fall under the water. And the guard throwing the dirt into the river was genius. The dirt separated upon coming into contact with an obstacle, in this instance, Violet’s body which allowed him to pinpoint her location

Dash's little laugh when he realises he's so fast he can run on water is so pure lt's like these kids have been holding back their powers all their life and now can push themselves to the best of their abilities

I'm pretty sure the reason Dash looks shocked is because he saw the impending crash. When he gasps, he looks a bit off to the side, not at the guard.

But the way dash makes up for his lack of strength is brilliant as well, by using his speed to throw hundreds of punches at a time he can take out someone bigger than him
The dad actually has superhuman strength
But it also showed how Dash has good reflexes, able to dodge those punches EASILY. Cool stuff
Amazing analysis ‼️
I don't think the look of horror had anything to do with seeing the guy's face, I think it was purely his reaction to the cliff behind them.
I was hoping someone else would notice this. Breaking the water tension by finally going slow enough at the last second, learning that his speed allows him to evade pretty much any attack,
; and Violet being a great leader and strategist, using the time the guards are distracted by her brother running away to turn invisible, and helping him past his freeze.
I’d say he was just reacting to the cliff itself. He kept smiling even after the mask was off, and didn’t look back to the person after seeing the cliff. Completely agree with the rest though.
He also froze after the last guard punches him then opened fire. He put his hands up in front of himself instead of running

Dash jump at the chance to protect his sister , and Violet was willing to give her life to protect him . lf that is not sibling love , idk what is .
Yeah Dash and Flash form Justice League Unlimited were peak
Dash suddenly stopping mid way to give conversations also happens in the film in the beginning.

i love it how dash as the younger brother manages to take out 6 guards including their vehicles while violet struggles to take out a single guard without his vehicle.
For real

It was important for the audience to know that dash always wanted the opportunity to freely use his powers, and with the grunts, he got his chance but it was never what he truly expected.

4:46 STRIKE! 🎳
0:03 sweet home alab...INCREDIBLE hehehehe
2:23 *never gets old*
This scene was lit AF
Man that one guy deserves Henchman of the Year he would have probably won if he was able to take them each one on one lol
I love the extra little detail of Dash's arms also pumping super fast as he runs. Also, that little giggle when he realizes he's running on water.

"Huh? 🤨 WAAGGHH!!!!!!! 😨”
It's kinda crazy to think that Dash probably has the highest on screen kill count out of all the Incredible family members
Love that laugh when he realises he's fast enough to run on water, he's like "I am running on water, yep, it's official, I am awesome"
Than again he did run on something like 14 mins prior to that scene

The crazy part is how those Syndrome guys where able to keep up with Dash.
Probably some of the most competent henchmen in most action media as they actually have strategies and change tactics when one doesn't work. Not to mention one almost succeeded in killing Violet and Dash if her force field hadn't activated.
3:09 insert Red Sun in the Sky song... 😂😂😂
Fun fact at 3:54 Joe Ranft voiced that guard
Joe Ranft voiced a favorite-hating guard? (Talking about Dash, by the way) How dare he.
