Hi mate, writing to you from Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. Bought my 2001 CLK 55 AMG in late 2020, she's almost done 203,000 kms and is superb to drive. Love the rumble from the engine and the amazing torque. Great video - excellent to see someone who genuinely knows his stuff!
I have a 2001 model. No real complaints to say about the car. I have 47k miles on mines. I take care of the oil changes on this car. Very easy to do when using a oil extractor. Replaced the spark plugs last year. That took me a couple of hours.
My grandpa had a '98 clk 200 kompressor. The 200k was only for the 'poor' european markets, but in the pre-'99 cars (they reduced the power of the engine with the 1999 'restyle') it was better value for the money then the 230K: almost the same performance but better (marginally) fuel economy, and lower sticker price. I love that car, even after 23 years (but only 36k km) it is still a great car to drive, and with more than appropriate power for the roads and traffic here in Italy!
In 98 the 200 Kompressor was only available in Italy (and maybe Spain and Portugal, I’m not quite sure) and it was equipped with the M 111 E 20 ML, which we didn’t get in Germany at the time. Over there we only got the non-supercharged version of the 2 Litre M 111. By the 2000 model year they introduced the M 111 EVO which resulted in a sort of harmonisation of the engines offered in Europe - hence the 200 and 230 Kompressor.. Very nice to read that your grandfather’s car is still holding up nice! 🙂✌️

My mother had a 1999 CLK 320 convertible., it was ordered from a picture shot in Germany in early 1998. They waited a year for it. My mother drove it to 120,000 miles until 2010 until she bought a CPO 2007 E350 sedan with low mileage.
These cars are super underated!! They click a lot of boxes. They are comfortable, fast and they handle. These cars paced the field in F1 in the year 2000. I love mine with 175K and drive it often. Anyone who is intersted in this car should buy it..won't regret it.
I had a very similar car for about 12 years, clk320 2000, black on black with amg rims. Looked almost identical! Cup holders' full automation eventually went, had a corner that bubbled up due to rust. After one winter had to get wiring replaced, snow melted and water leaked inside. Moonroof eventually started to get stuck, started to get misfires due to coils. This one is in incredible shape and very clean! 5:30 it's missing a horizontal strut, my had bottom bumper with a grills instead. They don't make a nice beefy rear like this anymore with split lights.
My mounts went out and so I bought them from FCPEuro and then had them installed for a couple hundred. They are not that difficult. The drivers side is the hardest but you can pull the pipe off the exhaust manifold and then it is fairly easy to get to. The mounts are not expensive. It makes a huge difference in the way the car feels.
i think a cool thing you should have pointed out with this car, is the fact that it from 2002, and it is amg, and it still uses a steering box. how well these cars drive, you would think it had a rack. that being said, great video =D
My father has owned a CLK55 since brand new. Love that car. It only has like 25,000 miles on it and I love riding in it. It's especially nice since we have a convertible version WITH the supercharger that some came with. It is incredibly fast, and an underrated AMG gem in my opinion.
For you to own one of these as a convertible was rare enough, but with a supercharger? I feel either your father had the engine swapped or converted, because no CLK55 came with a supercharger from factory.
Man that interior is soo close to my 2000 C230 Kompressor. I was able to snatch it up for 2500 . And the only thing it needed was .... motor mounts and transmission mounts. It only had 115k miles on it when I got it 3 years ago. Now it's at 130k and still runs and drives perfect. It was also garage kept so its in fantastic condition inside and out. It by far the most favorite car I have owned.
I had one of these in silver years ago. Absolutely one of the finest cars I've ever owned. Regretted it almost immediately, after I sold it. The only thing I disliked about it was that Mercedes had not yet gone to rack and pinion steering on this model. That would have made linear steering much more accurate. And just as Car Wizard was alluding to, these cars were still of an era when Mercedes were clean and elegant designs. Not the silly LED eyebrows and such of modern Mercedes.
This era of Mercedes is probably the last where they were built like tanks. I own an 02 C320, every time I close the door it sounds like a bank vault. The new ones seem to lack this.
THIS is.... When MB still made cars that were unique, elegant and one of a kind, unlike these days MB was nice and classically beautiful up to late 2000s I have been driving our 2005 S55 that my mom bought new. I got this car in 2017 and would not change for some new 2020 BENZ that looks like everything else with ton of huge screens I had my motor mounts fixed on my S class last week, was quite nice bill lol
Nice video! These older Mercedes-Benz models are built like tanks, I daily drive a 2000 E320 4matic (with all the options) and it's been an ultra-reliable car that is also fun & smooth to drive, and great fuel economy for a 3.2 liter V6. This generation of CLK is the convertible version of the W210 and they truly are great luxurious cars that are built to last especially since they only have naturally aspirated engines and no air suspension, they are bullet proof cars when regular maintenance is done.
On mine, the motor/tranny mounts made a huge difference. I also found that once I replaced the MAF, the engine was dead smooth again at idle. Those early 2000 Mercedes just had "the look". You know immediately what it is, and it's got styling for days. The new ones...meh..
Hello Mr Wizard!! I recently had some custom work on my 2002 clk55 amg and the folks who did the work I feel must have grounded something out. What was installed was a complete body kit, wrap, hood, rims, tires and air Suspension. They had my car for almost a year as I didn’t pressure them since their rep for custom work was very good. After almost a year and bad communication i demanded my car back. When I got it back, it looked great but now when I drive I hear noise through my speakers. Radio doesn’t work. When I turn on my blinkers, I hear the loud “thump thump, thump thump” of blinker noise through the speakers. When I complained they told me it was “coincidence”. I don’t think so. I feel they broke a ground or have something shorted. I did some research and I believe I seen that all the main wiring harnesses are behind the seat in the trunk side. If this is correct, where can I go about finding info on removing my rear seat to gain access to see if something is obvious? Fyi, I did install disconnects on my air suspension wiring so I was able to disconnect all their work but the grounding noise is still there. Someone mentioned maybe an Ariel antenna issue. I’m going to see if I can get info on that. Thanks and hope you can help
@@ayumu-senpaii Only one of their V8s that wasn’t reliable was the M156 and they corrected the issues it had in 2011. Might wanna retract your statement…. Especially considering many early E63s are beginning to hit 150k miles+
A friend bought an E55 AMG we all advised him not to go for- it was in good shape, about 62k miles when he got ahold of it. Worn out LCAs', yes both. Diff seals leaking. Fixed that and within 8k miles the woodruff key broke and launched the damper/pulley around under hood.$5000 in damages. But wait- there is more ! Alternator went out 3 months later, $1400 w/o labor. Lucky for him it got totalled in an accident shortly thereafter. Just an endless stream of cash outflow. I still chuckle when I hear a Benz commercial that proclaims," The best or nothing!" They are nice when they work, but that juice isn't worth the squeeze
The Front Bumper trim is always missing on these. I guess nobody replaces it because its expensive for such a small detail but it makes all the difference in the front
I think it's called the tow hook cover on these, and yeah I remember when these CLK's were fairly new and they'd almost always be missing. Probably just flimsy lightweight plastic that broke/fell off easily.
I had one as a company car in 2003 and boy was it a fantastic car! Super super nice to drive but I found it very uncomfortable on long drives. 3 years later I got a volvo c70 just because of the better seats as I spent so much time in them. Not as fast for sure but with the turbo it always felt quick.
Really like the channel. Please consider showing some of the work being completed. I miss that type of content as shown in your earlier videos. Keep up the Wizardry!
I have the 2003 CLK500 Elegance version Merc. It is a great car AND the back seats can fit Adults in them and the boot can take several suitcases. Love mine to bits. The only thing that I found out about later was the V8 engine uses 2 spark plugs per cylinder and they cost a small fortune each. Merc quoted $35 each. (ouch) Otherwise a brilliant car to drive and cruise in.
Hey, is that an Alfa 164? typical problems on the E class and CLks are the liquid crystal cluster displays. Another common issue is the Crank position sensor. Sometimes the MAF sensors also go bad but not often. I worked on a lot of those back in 2007 and 2008 while a tech at a Mercedes dealership.
Got the 2002 CLK 320. Burgundy over gray leather interior. Great color combo. Just did a filter with synthetic oil topped off fluids...$130.00 Replaced front rotors brake pads and calibers wheel bearings...$1400.00 Replaced 10 yr. old battery with a new Diehard. $250.00 Got 130,000 miles on it and it drives like new. 25-28 miles per gallon V-6. Some upholstery wear on drivers side. Air-conditioning needs adjustments, trunk springs really to strong. Need two 2025 batteries for key fob. Looking for a touch up on exterior G-7 Burgundy & clear coat next. Any feedback friends? Please share! Thank you!
I would have liked to hear the exhaust note at idle (much more than the talk about estimates lol). I bet this V8 sounds great with that nice factory, nearly true dual exhaust.
As someone that has one, I'll testify its fairly quiet. The idle has a little boom/bass sound. Nothing aggressive but you can tell it has bite. Which imo is perfect. You don't hear it coming until you gas it 😏
@@roveradventures Agreed. I have a stock 2000 E55 in my garage right now and these are extremely quiet at idle and even when revved. Benz only gave us belt driven fan noise unless wide open throttle lol.

my CLK 55 AMG 2003 had a battery drain problemfor the longest time, found out it was the power seat. i just unplugged it now it works fine
My father has owned a CLK55 since brand new. Love that car. It only has like 25,000 miles on it and I love riding in it. It's especially nice since we have a convertible version WITH the supercharger that some came with. It is incredibly fast, and an underrated AMG gem in my opinion.
none came with a supercharger
I appreciate the exemplary work all of you, Mrs Wizard et. al produce, but I want the world to know that YOU are the BOB ROSS OF AUTO MECHANICS.
I have a 2002 W208 CLK 430 amg with the AMG appearance package. Its the last of the old benz
I dont like the newer one. They messedd it up
If you tell me it’s silver then you have one the best MB’s ever made!
@@7633J its brilliant silver of course
I have a 2001 CLK55 AMG with 89,000 miles on it. Awesome running car and not overly technical.
This era of Mercedes is probably the last where they were built like tanks. I own an 02 C320, every time I close the door it sounds like a bank vault. The new ones seem to lack this.
I have to slam mine like hell, like really hard to close the door properly on the CLK as the door has no frame.
I have the exact same car! I got lucky and found a mint one with only 67,000 miles! It's my favorite vehicle. Great video!
THIS is....
When MB still made cars that were unique, elegant and one of a kind, unlike these days
MB was nice and classically beautiful up to late 2000s
I have been driving our 2005 S55 that my mom bought new. I got this car in 2017 and would not change for some new 2020 BENZ that looks like everything else with ton of huge screens
I had my motor mounts fixed on my S class last week, was quite nice bill lol
Love it so much, you guys are just you. No show no glitter 👌❤️
My mom bought a brand new CLK45 2002 in Silver with gray interior. My mom says it was one her favorite cars she had ever owned.
A hood ornament on an AMG? Wonderful times!
😹😹😹
OG CLK is a very hot ride. I have a W209 CLK 500 Cabrio, I love it.
On mine, the motor/tranny mounts made a huge difference. I also found that once I replaced the MAF, the engine was dead smooth again at idle. Those early 2000 Mercedes just had "the look". You know immediately what it is, and it's got styling for days. The new ones...meh..
After the CLS55 AMG coupe and the E55 super charged cars they didn’t look good until 2018 again
my uncle has a CLK55AMG from this generation! it survived a flood and still started right up
I HAVE 3 CLK W208s AND WILL BUY MORE AND NEVER SELL THEM! THEY JUST LOOK SOO SEXY AND PERFORM GREAT! AWESOME VID WIZARD!
Subtitles no longer read Urination Bob... Me sad.
It's a 5.4L 3V engine, just like the Ford Triton! Except there is no variable valve timing.
And it doesn't break. Ever.
Yep way more reliable. Mercedes makes the best V8s by far
@@diablocls55 uhhhhhhhh buddy you might want to retract that statement. Some of their v8's aren't reliable and have expensive repairs.
@@ayumu-senpaii The M113 engine is very reliable. Usually coil packs and valve cover gaskets fail, but otherwise very reliable.
@@ayumu-senpaii Only one of their V8s that wasn’t reliable was the M156 and they corrected the issues it had in 2011. Might wanna retract your statement…. Especially considering many early E63s are beginning to hit 150k miles+
The Car Wizards has the coolest walk on UA-cam! I'd love to see a continuous loop video of him just walking around.
Another one of my favorites!
I still chuckle when I hear a Benz commercial that proclaims," The best or nothing!"
They are nice when they work, but that juice isn't worth the squeeze
It's a 5.4 liter V8, not 5.5. They may call it a CLK 55, but the engine is a 5.4. Great car. Very good videos.
10.5:1 compression ratio? I’ve been trying to figure this out.
Omg I love that CLK55 AMG 😍🔥
I had one as a company car in 2003 and boy was it a fantastic car! Super super nice to drive but I found it very uncomfortable on long drives. 3 years later I got a volvo c70 just because of the better seats as I spent so much time in them. Not as fast for sure but with the turbo it always felt quick.
I have a beautiful red 2003 cabriolet. Love the car. This car the Wizard has needs the cluster ribbons repaired.
I'm wondering if this is prerecorded and the Wizard is floating now instead.
Really like the channel. Please consider showing some of the work being completed. I miss that type of content as shown in your earlier videos. Keep up the Wizardry!
Have owned mine for 6yrs now, great car👍🏼 can’t believe Hoovie sold his 55, he’ll regret it when prices go up.
Mr and Mrs, what a dynamic duo. Turns out I follow anything you post.
My baby, I just looked off my balcony at mine, thanks car wizard and Euro Asian Bob 👍🇮🇪👍🇮🇪👍🇮🇪
Hi wiz in at 11th🇮🇪
Coincidentally my clk 08 has just developed a worn engine mount
Gorgeous car. As someone who drives an older, black German coupe I love it. However, mines a 3 litre BMW so you're probably not so keen!
Just did a filter with synthetic oil topped off fluids...$130.00
Replaced front rotors brake pads and calibers wheel bearings...$1400.00
Replaced 10 yr. old battery with a new Diehard. $250.00
Got 130,000 miles on it and it drives like new.
Thank you!
We don't see RAM trucks in the shop. Is there a reason ??
@@bricktonyb In your dreams Brick !!!
In Fort Lauderdale, waiters typically drive these.
I had to do the mounts on my 55 and it drives like a dream now.
I slowed the video down to 50% to check out AMG's badging on the door panels' wood trim, and had a great laugh. Mrs. Wizard, forgive me.. Gotta check it out though. Not to pick on Mrs. Wizard or anyone else, but one can make anyone sound rather intoxicated by doing this... Good fun
I am about to post up a "barn find" 03 CLK 55 AMG Mercedes with 51K miles will need to be cleaned up runs drives suggest a tune-up a trans mount is weak and a TPS. The body is very straight and the interior is amazing. Before I throw it out on forums I wanted to see if anyone was interested. Let me know if you want more info. it will be 8500 which is a steal for this. :)
I own a 2001 w210 e55 amg .. the best all around car there is
Hmm ,I have noticed a little bit of a shake at idle on my 1995 c class. I'll have a look at the mounts in the morning. Thanks car wizard 👍
2003-2006 Mercedes E55 went to 469HP / 516 lbs Torque on Dyno was 495HP! ABSOLUTE BULLET PROOF MONSTER!! 🏆
Nice car, lucid talk and well displayed
This is perhaps my favorite Mercedes ever
I have the 2001 same car and it’s awesome it’s has these go out twice but I’m pretty rough on it lol. Also can add harmonic balancer and coil springs cracking to common problems on these
Yeah I just realized I've got bad engine mounts and transmission mounts on my car luckily thru don't seem hard to fix on a 05 impala. But im sure getting tired of the clunking
Awesome SCORE euroASIAN-bob!!
