"put your keys in your knuckles, like I have to," is only in the live version & speaks volumes to women - the desperation, the heightened heartbeat, the anxiety, the fear, the need to survive.
This. In the late 90's and early 2000's I lived in NYC. I worked in the city (Manhattan) but lived in Brooklyn, and often worked until 10 or 11pm, but the train ride was anywhere between 40-60 minutes with at least one transfer, at 16/17 years old. Taking the train home was sometimes terrifying. Walking home after getting off the train was even worse. I always carried my keys that way, and still do to this day.
Honestly, it enrages me.
Kudos to that piano player for playing so beautifully even though she's singing about cutting off fingers. Nerves of steel, both of them.
I love chinchilla, she is such a boss. I love that she writes, and produces her own music, and even makes her own outfits for her videos.
I love this version of this song so, so much! She is truly magnificent in her interpretation of her own original song.
I mean, it's like she covered her own song as a different artist. Like how Angelina Jordan may have covered it like she slowed down Elvis' Suspicious Minds or her cover on Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. She truly transforms them, making them nearly a different song.
So yeah, Chinchilla is covering, or uncovering, her own song as a different artist. Brilliant artist. She blows me away.
Edit: And so true in the pianist. He is an integral part of this transformation of the song.
I'm gonna need to check out the original now.
"That little head-bob at the end.." Finally someone else notices!
It's a tiny thing, but it's one of my favourite bits of this performance for some reason. It's the exactly correct finish to the performance.
I've always felt there's something of the music box ballerina about Chinchilla's performance here - emphasised by the shape of the jacket/dress thingy, the staccato movements and the phrasing of the song.
I've watched this a few million times at this stage (slight exaggeration), and it still leaves me open-mouthed with admiration.
And, oh my god.. when she hits '..scorned', it's full-body chills time.
It's just complete perfection from start to finish, piano included.
Great reaction, mate - I love how insightful your commentaries are.
Goosebumps every time. Doesn't matter how many times I hear this song.
Same!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Best reaction I’ve seen to this amazing performance. If you listen to her original, it has a quite different feel to it. I prefer that one on my Spotify playlists, but the live version - this one - is fucking stunning and gives so much more emotions and context if you want.
It’s so raw, so naked, so honest, so scorned, so angry, so afraid, so vengeful. The intentional imperfections of her singing and the way she uses her voice highlights the absolute perfection of “a woman scorned”.
I love this.❤
Thanks Jonas! It's an amazing musical experience.
I swear it's a Primal Scream.
The studio version feels completely different. It’s almost a completely different song. It’s still very good but for me this is stellar. A completely different feel is Cold Water there isn’t a video but there is a live performance that I think is an award show. Another completely different feel is her song Elements. It’s one of my favorites. I really enjoyed your reaction 😊
Thanks Kim!
EMA 2020 Cold Water
Her voice is maybe my legit favorite of all time. She is a unicorn. It’s crazy how both her & Ren. Isn’t super stars. Winning awards etc. I love her so much. So unique 😊
You should definitely check out How To Be Me live by Ren and Chinchilla! The harmonies are absolutely beautiful and simultaneously haunting at the same time. Similar feel to Chalk Outlines.
Ditto
Chinchilla is an amazing artist. The live version of Fingers is one of my favorite performances of hers. Thanks for the great analysis!
Thanks for watching Michael!
❤ Chinchilla just dropped "Cut You Off." U r going to ❤ it! She's gonna blow!!❤ The wave called REN is going to make music & this world better!!💞💐❤️🔥
I absolutely appreciate & love your reaction!!! Thank you for tuning in deeply to our sister,Chinchilla!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Elements" & "Fabulous" are also great!!❤
Great reaction and breakdown fella. The outfit/video remind me of a Tim Burton movie. I know she definitely made the hat herself, maybe the rest of the outfit too?!?
Yeah. I agree! It's very burtonesq.
Listening to the live version and the studio version actually says everything, to me, about how contrived and " hollow " the Music " INDUSTRY " is. The formulaic, commercialisation of the studio version is only sellable ( is that a real word ? lol ) to those who have had their souls ripped away by a " four on the floor " beat. Don't get me wrong, the studio version has merit too ( but that is simply born out of the inimitable ability of Chinchilla to mould a song into any format ) This LIVE version is where the truth lies within this song. I am a singer songwriter, myself, who has always much preferred my own rough, initial demo's of songs, rather than the " finished, polished, version " The recording, engineering process, in my experience, seems to dilute the true emotion of the song via its, apparent, emphasis on perfection. I honestly believe : the slight imperfections in any art form is what connects a piece to another sentient being .... I'm waffling but I know what I mean lol 😂 Chinchilla is remarkable ! x
Yeah I honestly feel like both Ren and Chinny would benefit from releasing all their material as these live versions!
I agree. It's a great time for music. I haven't been so excited by new artists since the early 90s.
Chinchilla is music. She becomes the emotions of the song every single time
Chinchilla is a hidden gem, her attitude and toughness shine here.
She is so refreshingly wonderful… yet again in many arts Pain breeds such incredible people… hell of a trade off… part of the appeal I suppose is you feel for them and root for them on some level. This is a perfect example of something that couldn’t be ghosted written and then performed in any kind of way that this hits… this is pure experience portrayed to us in art.
Chinchilla - Elements next! LESSS GOOO
Really great reaction, especially your acknowledgement of the foreshadowing and mood set by the pianist. Your analogy of the live performance where nobody shows up, that intense solitude and isolation, was brilliant!
She's sooo damn good isn't she and so full of surprises. TRIGGER is on repeat on my playlist right now - it's different again but no spoilers from me! ♥
I heard her mention that she chose to add “Put your keys in your fingers like I have” to the end of this version but not in the studio version.
She really is a phenomenal artist. So many things to love about your reaction and analysis - love especially how you describe her timbre and the incredible way the pianist supports her, but your entire video was fantastic (as always 😄) ❤
Thanks Elle! ❤️
I just found your channel.
Another Aussie here.
I started watching reactions when John Farnham hit the international reactors, stumbled on The Big Push, Ren, and then Chinchilla.
I've lived through a lot of decades of music, and now am totally hooked, obsessed and in awe of them.
Love your reaction and now I'll go check out more
Many thanks ❤
This is an incredible live performance. So emotive
"Imagine a live performance where no one shows up". Wow, that should be a lyric.
This is an incredible performance. Love it.
What a stunning vocal example of sheer elegance! I just love Chinchilla, I am so happy to have found her via Ren. Great reaction as well.
Aaaah, I love your reactions! You not only have technical expertise and mad attention to detail to show us things we missed, and intelligence and depth to resonate with the meaning on intellectual level, but on top of this you clearly resonate emotionally with what you're watching and are moved by it. Killer combo! ❤
Thank you! Did I see you on her Discord?
@@PrymalChaos Oh yes, we had a conversation even ;)
@@stranger2Utube I thought so!
Just wasn't sure about the username, but it was too similar. 😆
Thank you. I really love someone who listens. Such an articulate observer.
Great reaction! I love how you described her ostentatious style as a way to focus on her more as she is so vulnerable with her emotional singing. Your breakdowns of her singing and the piano are really thought out. She is Amazing! This is my favorite song of hers and one of the best things I have ever seen. So powerful!
Chinchilla is like Aurora in a way; they both do amazing work live that usually leaves the studio work for dead.
first time i've seen you react. your word choices are so good! thanks for giving chinchilla the attention to her artistry she deserves 💜
thank you for reacting to my favourite female artist ever ❤💕💖
Brilliant reaction.
Thanks Thomas!
love this girl!! fun reactions
Thank you for this reaction, next Chinchilla "Elements" please💚
Man, I do love Chinchilla and can not wait for more music from her.
If you like the kind of song that starts slow and builds into beautiful madness maybe even topped with one of the best female voices out there - then I highly recommend "Falling Free" by Eivor (live at the Old Theatre in Torshavn). If you've watched The Last Kingdom then you have heard her voice in the intro (or any other bit of soundtrack with vocals in that show). She is just mind bogglingly good - classical, jazz, folk, tribal throat singing... she does it all.
I am not familiar with Eivor. I'll check them out.
@@PrymalChaos I am looking forward to it. 🙂
Oh wow, I just found your channel - and Chincilla with this bit! I thoroughly enjoy the both of you. Love your approach to musical content and jeeeeezus this one's got pipes on her. Loved all of it, thank you for this!
How good is she! Stellar talent.
@@PrymalChaos pure talent and dedication. So good.
She is truly magnificent in her interpretation of her own original song. Thank you for your reaction.
Great reaction. I have seen this several times and enjoy the reactions. Something I noticed was when she sings "this was me last year", the video lingers over the shadow. It may be coincidential, but I think it was intentional.
I agree, as if to say - ' I was a shadow of who I really am '
Good eye!
Brilliant reaction! Thanks, I learn so much when I watch your reactions.
She has stated over and over, that she feels 1000% more alive when she's singing live. You should check out her track she did live for the BMAs a few years ago. "COLD WATER"
Chinchilla is a modern evolution of the artists of the past who acted their songs. Her ability to show emotion in her presentation and vocalisation is amazing. I have become a fan since Chalk Outlines. Just wonderful.
Best analysis I’ve heard yet. ;)
Thanks moonbubbles!
@@PrymalChaos you’re so welcome!
Goosebumps everytime❤😊❤
I just dont have the suitably expressive words for how I feel about this song and its artist....nope its too excellent.
Absolutely loved it.
❤ Hess's Ty for reacting to this song ❤ it's my fave song this year it's outstanding n unique XXX this chick can sing heavy metal n reggae too she's a killa chilla😊❤ xx love from the uk
I'm gonna have to look at this heavy metal thing!
Great reaction to a fantastic performance. Thnx❤🇬🇧
I believe she both writes and produces her own material.
I see a lot of Kate Bush singing style as of The Dreaming 1982!
Yep, her claws were out on this version!. I found it intriguing that not once did the shadow ever display her fingers. Although open to the camera, they never really showed up in her shadow. I am sure it was intentional in the filming, the meaning escapes me, though....
Interesting!
In the studio version she doesn’t do the big belted part, which broke my heart 😢… or the part about the keys. I love your reactions!!!
Thank you for watching!
@@PrymalChaos I am a total Chillibean!!! gonna be rocking one of your shirts in the very near future, they are awesome!
Love your breakdowns!
love the lyrics....master class singing
💗💗💗
I really hate the stuff on social media so much. That being said, if it weren't for UA-cam we would probably never know any of these fabulous Independent artists. This is the reason that I love UA-cam. If it wasn't for reactors we wouldn't know any of these people. I love Chinchilla and Ren so much! They're so unique. Great reaction! Much love✌️❤️
Chinchilla is dropping her official music video for her new track CUT YOU OFF tonight at 7.00pm UK time. Would LOVE to see your reaction - it's gonna be awesome!
❤❤❤❤❤
Her voice with the piano - I can hear remnants of Tori Amos ❤
Definitely. Whether it’s intentional or not.
Love her music
Fantastic in-depth analysis. Thank you!!
It's such a masterful performance.
I'd love to know if she listens to Steam Powered Giraffe. (for that clockwork thing)
I just brought up Steam Powered Giraffe too! You beat me to it! I've never seen anyone else mention them (in relation to Chinchilla or otherwise)...
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💕
Oh my Looord, she is goooood. Great reaction again. 👌🏻
Please, listen to Steam Powered Giraffe - Honeybee. 👍🏻
Not to go all girl power, but this song is an anthem for abused women. It gives them 3 minutes of internal power they need when they are feeling the psychological damage their abusers heaped upon them, which was then internalized. Same with Little Girl Gone.
I'm still waiting for someone to comment on the last line, "put your keys in your knuckles, like I have to", which is only one of a hundred things women have been taught is a method of self defense when doing something as simple as walking to our cars. For women, that necessary, everyday event is considered putting ourselves in a dangerous situation, and the onus has always been on us to not "ask for it".
Do you think I could request you do the video to this one and to little girl gone if you haven't yet with fingers video make sure your lenses are in the colors are really beautiful and I think as a producer you would appreciate the artwork of her videos. So yes but lives are Audibly better more intense and filled with emotion but the videos are definitely worth listening to the song again just to see the beautiful artistry in her videos.
Yes! I'll certainly get there. I've done the lives, but not the OMVs. Sadly I get pulled in. so many directions and I have a relatively short amount of time to work on the channel. It just takes some time.
I appreciate you watching!
"Either way, I'm sure she's gonna bring it"
oh my sweet sweet friend, if you only knew what you were predicting...
edit: you mentioned her voice can sound like a super-saturated guitar... WATCH 'ELEMENTS' and listen to the vocal tracks (probably don't need to tell you to listen to the vocal tracks for you to pay attention to them, lol, but... )
edit 2: a single slowly repeated piano note being distressing - it always puts me in mind of the sounds of a patient hooked up to monitors in hospital.
edit 3: her mannerisms often remind me of Steam Powered Giraffe's steampunk aesthetic.
The original is okay. It's not near as good as the live.
Thanks for the great reaction and breakdown.😊
I much prefer this to the studio one. She reminds me somewhat of Kate Bush in her voice near the end 🖤
just realised you haven't reviewed " how to be me" her collaboration with Ren, I think you'd like that one (I love it).
this one: loved the singing and piano but disliked the lyrics, to this and "little girl gone" not sure what to make of her theme choices.
Listen to Little girl gone and trigger
Clockwork? How about Clockwork Orange?
What a movie! I have drawn several parallels to parts of Ren’s material too.
