“Keep your keys in your knuckles like I have to” is the last thing she said. Lots of women are coached to put keys from their keychain between their knuckles when walking alone at night as a form of protection in case they’re attacked. She wants the subject of the song to just feel a moment of the terror of violence from men that she, and women in general, feel every day.
I've walked down so many streets and parking lots with keys sticking out a fist and my head on a swivel. It's stressful.
@@ammocandoit I have a wife and 2 teenage daughters and I really struggle to not say this kind of stuff too much because I don’t want to scare them…but I know it’s a reality of their life that I’ll never really understand. That line hit me when I first watched this, because it’s not in the studio version. It’s a plea for empathy and understanding and it makes me gulp every time I hear it.

In high school (1989 grad) the cop that came and spoke to our class said the keys made it a lot easier to identify saying, "Yeah, it's the one with the four holes in his face"
I believe that, like Little Girl Gone, this is about her treatment in the music industry by management, labels, etc. I love that Karma really did come back around. She's able to make her own decisions and do things they didn't want her to do and now she's getting the success she didn't get with them.

I love LOVE your reaction, my dude. So many people skip over the metaphorical things she's referring to, simply because she is such an expressive artist in her attire, in her musical abilities, ya know she has a very edgy kind of thing she does in her art. I think it shocks people and it makes them miss the connection between what she's saying with her art, and her lyrics, and what she's actually trying to speak out about. Wonderful breakdown.

I am so happy you took a deeper look at this one, it made me understand even more. There is an interview with her, where she explains what is ment by ´put your keys in your knuckles as I have too…. When women go walk in the darknes, they often put their key between her fingers to defend herself in case…. She got the idea to put that into the last sentence when she was recording the song live. I think you had some great insights. and Chinchilla added those last 2 lines during rehearsals for this performance. For something fun and totally different listen to Elements. It says lyric video, but Chinchilla is actually performing it it.
Screaming bloody murder is a term (certainly in the UK) for screaming at the top of your lungs or telling someone/ the authorities what is going on which will stop the person from hurting anyone else as everyone knows about it or they get arrested/ dealt with. I dunno. Lost track of what I was saying..
Great reaction! I have to agree with the dark energy behind her words. I was thinking 'batman villain' rather than Sweeney Todd but it comes back to that idea of someone mentally damaged due to abuse who then goes and does something evil in response. Her look here reminds me of Tom Petty in Don't Come Around Here No More'.
I'm not sure if it's due to the piano but the vocalist she most reminds me of in this particular song is Tori Amos but I think she could hold up against any of the great women vocalists...such a powerful voice!
