1080p at 5 inches is sharp as hell. What are you talking about? That's 448 PPI for crying out loud. 1440p is really not needed at that size.
There's a difference nonetheless. And sharpness isn't always about PPI. This is an overpriced shit phone.
PPI is literally the measurement of how many pixels are in an inch so yes it does determine sharpness
Anthony Williamson Pixel density certainly has a factor in determining sharpness, but as I've already said, THATS NOT EVERYTHING. Sharpness also derives from color variety and shade acuity. Both of which are irrelevant to PPI.
For VR it is definitely needed.

So I can tell you the blue shift isn't THAT bad and you have to GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to notice it.
And until Google pushes their software update giving more color options, just use Oreo Colorizer to get those rich colors back
He does make a valid point that if your paying 900 for a top tier phone then you should be getting a top tier phone if the price was like 600 dollars then I am sure Austin would overlook it

PS, I sold my old phone on Swappa for 230, plus got that T-Mobile $325 credit for bringing a Pixel....I think paying full price is crazy for all these phones lol

It's not that bad tbh. Google made a BAD move there though making LG (The worst manufacturers ever) actually make their larger phone. LG is crap and has WAY to many issues such as constant rebooting after one or two years. Even their display had quite a few issues.
The 2XL model has a larger degree of blue shift compared to rival phones. Some 2XLs are worse than others but it's still there. That's not justifiable from a top dollar flagship phone.
after hearing all this stuff about pixel xl screen, i changed my pre order to pixel 2 and yes you are right if you gonna pay over 800 you better get best of everything. I don't change phones every year and pixel 2 will get 3 years of official android updates not just security patches and no other android company does that not even samsung so 700 including taxes for pixel 2 is worth it for me since i will end up using it for 3 years

The later production models of the pixel 2 xl have for the most part, fixed a lot of the issues early models have had. Also, with the latest update use saturated mode on the XL 2 and then go into developer settings to enable sRGB. Doing this makes the display look wayyyyyyyy better
The problem is, if you're spending $900 on a fucking phone, you shouldn't have to do ANY of that.

And to make matters worse, Samsung makes worlds best display's for Smartphones, ever. If even they are not perfect, just imagine the rest. The Pixel 2 XL is using an LG OLED which actually is pretty darn good. It's just that Google for some reason decided to ditch P3-color gamut (stock on Galaxy S6/S7/S8 but also on the iPhone 7 (Plus) / iPhone 8 (plus)) and they are sticking to SRGB. Due to that, the display looks too flat for many and whenever you share an image to another person, the other person will see the image with more color due to most recent flagships using P3-color gamut. Have you ever seen how worthless the display is on the iPhone 8? It's just rubbish IF you are used to any recent AMOLED panel (Galaxy S7 Edge/S8/Note 8). It's so dim, huge brightness shift and it's not properly calibrated (too cool, this increases brightness but makes the display look too blue (~7100K which is BAD, ~6450K is the standard). Imho, Austin bashed the Pixel 2 XL for the wrong reason. He did not mention the Pixel 2 XL having twice the battery life of an iPhone 8 Plus which MKBHD DID. MBKHD mentioned the ridicilously long lasting battery but Austin did not...hmmmm

I remember when this phone first came out, it was the best competitor to the iPhone in my opinion. The way the phone had its own software, messaging app just like iPhone. I just love it.

Don't have to wait to see what they have to offer. Oppo's new R11s will be revealed on 2nd Nov and OP5t will be an exact replica(other than the processor) with the usual rubbish camera. And it will cost you $550 for the base variant with 64gb. Pixel 2 with 64gb costs $650.

Finally someone focuses on the Pixel 2 instead of just the 2 XL! The screen sizes and aspect ratios make the devices very different. And now the 2 XL screen quality makes the difference even greater. Thank you Austin!

I feel like the original Pixel took away features that the cheaper-at-launch Nexus 6P did well such as the front-firing speakers and then added them to the Pixel 2 as "new" features so, that it will seem like an upgrade over the previous version. Don't get me wrong though, the 6P, Pixel and Pixel 2 are all great phones.
He didn't go nearly as hard as he did on this phone than on the iPhone X. I guess for Austin, animojis are the best feature for a flagship smartphone in 2017.

Depends on what you want and what you need out of it. Samsung flagships get MAX 3 major Android version updates, although that could change soon. This means that a Samsung flagship phone will be ideal to use for about five to six years (security updates continue even after Android version updates stop). Now, a shit ton of people think that the minute a version of Android is no longer the newest one it should belong in a dumpster fire, this is untrue, there are at leas a few more years left in that life cycle. No, this isn't iOS levels of updates but it is nice, plus there is the option of custom ROMs after support ends. Most $400 phones usually only see one Android version update, or sometimes none. OnePlus is good at support but Sony kills it in this department, aside from the old Google (Nexus). Nobody seems to remember OnePlus virtually abandoning the OnePlus X phone.

pixel 2 will definitely be my next phone. everything is just fantastic. yeah the 18:9 on my s8 is great but the slightly less screen real estate isn't a deal breaker and the upgraded speakers compared to my s8 is a huge step up.

Isn't the smaller one also using that gamut by default? If so, it reinforces my thoughts that a number of 2 XLs have defective panels.

Watching this on the Pixel 2 XL. At first I definitely noticed the blue tint when you tilt the phone, but by the second day, I hardly even noticed. It doesn't affect me in the slightest.
I'll keep my beautiful S8 plus for now.

Wife and I both have Pixel 2 5", absolutely stunning phones and have no regrets going for the "smaller" phone.
Just got my pixel 2 xl. At least on my model. The screen is not as bad as the press and UA-cam reviewers say it is. It's better looking than my iPhone 6 Plus screen and size is just perfect. Yes there is a blue tint if you tilt it but I don't use my phone sideways anyway. This is the snappiest phone I've ever used (snappier than my iPhone 6 Plus the day it came out) and the camera is beautiful! Well done! The screen viewing angle could be better but the way it is doesn't bother me as much as I thought.

The uproar over lost of 3.5mm headphone jack on a smartphone, yet circa early 2000s 3.5mm headphone jack was not the standard on most phones, I remember there was 2.5mm headphone, and also the proprietary jack on Sony-Ericsson's Walkman Phones.
Thank you! This is one of the only videos that I've seen that hasn't focussed entirely on the Pixel 2 XL. That phone is just too big for me and it is the only one that all the other channels talk about.

What's a game changer for me is, this is Google's second phone, I think they did alright, the only real issue is that tint, but that's not an issue of Google but LG Panels, (yes it should've been inspected better, they'll learn) Anything else I've heard is nit picking, plastic feel, headphone jack, wireless charging, you can't complain really when it's their second phone and they're trying to do a lot as it is. They'll get there eventually.
Not being a Samsung fan boy but with how low you can get a regular S8 right now and with almost no compromises, I think the pixel is no match unless you absolutely love a specific feature.

Asi Boy see I actually don't mind the screen. And I'm saying this as an iPhone user who just switched to the pixel XL. I can understand the screen issue though when editing pictures though because I sent a photo to my friend and it looked completely different to the way it looks on my phone. But other than that I really like it. Also I really love the software on this phone it's fast and amazing. I'm still keeping my iPhone 7 plus but I'm keeping my pixel 2

Shame that it has a QA issue. Really liked everything else about this phone minus no jack.
MKBHD explained the whole screen issue, and blamed Google for not releasing a software update to fix the color issue.

Pixel 2 Xl doesn't have 6 inch AMOLED display. It has a 6 inch POLED display made by LG. And the display is not that bad. It's a good 538 PPI display.

Respect your honesty about the 2XL screen. That blue shift, along with the potential burn-in and black smearing is unacceptable from a company of Google size. Hopefully next time Google source the XL screen to Samsung instead of LG.

One plus 5 is still a one of the best phones out there. It even got one of the highest satisfaction rate from any phone including iphones. So i think if they go for a OP5T it will be well received. I don't see a reason not to get it assuming that it won't have any hardware issues like the pixel 2 is facing now.

You didn't even mention the aspect ratios, the Pixel 2 XL can handle ultrawide HD content natively, and with the normal Pixel 2, no matter what you watch you end up with huge screen bezels (see Linus' review).
Sure, the screen might be "better" on the Pixel 2, but as soon as you start doing any kind of media consumption on them the Pixel 2 XL ends up the better choice.

I've had the pixel 2 xl a little over a week, and I love it... Except for the screen. No issues with burn in though, so hopefully that's an isolated incident and not widespread. Keeping my fingers crossed.
